Statistical data on consumption Comprehensive statistics of consumption are not collected.total supplies, that is United Kingdom mill production of vegetable s and imports of vagetable s as such, (see items A.1.. and D.1.)may, however, be taken as approximating to consumption in the long term. A summary is given in Table IV. Table IV UNITED KINIGDOM Estimated Vegetable Oil Supplies ('000 metric tons) Oil 1965 1966 1967 Groundnut 92.6 112.7 132.7 Coconut 79.5 68.3 66.8 Palm 117.4 150.2 98.7 Palm-kernel 94.2 96.3 85.6 Cottonseed 50.9 44.9 17.8 Soyabean 69.1 57.6 54.9 Sunflowerseed 2.4 5.1 38.5 Rapeseed 14.6 l.2 21.2 Olive 2.8 2.6 2.7 Castor 29.1 21.9 28.4 Linseed 82.9 71.4 60.9 Tung 5.3 4. 8, 5.2 Other 14.7 19.1 17.0 TOTAL 655.5 673.1 630.4 Estimated supplies above are totals of United Kingdom mill production and direct imports cf crude and refined vegetable s. Imports of processed vegetable s (including hydrogenated s) which are relatively small have been disregarded.

COM.AG/W/5/Add. 6 Page 7 C.2. Trends on consumption and estimates for 1970 Total supplies of crude vegetable s (imports plus United Kingdom miil production) fell from 741,680 metric tons in 1958 to 640,080 metric tons in 1967. Level of supplies in 1970 will depend primarily on availability and price of competing animals fats and s. (See C.4.below.) C.3. Retail and wholesale prices The greator part of vegetable supplies are used in the margarine and food manufacturing industries or for industrial purposes and retail sales are relatively small. No information is available on prices paid by users. C.4. Factors conditioning the evolution of internal consumption Because of the large degree of interchangeability between the various s and fats in their main and uses, the chief factors affecting consumption of vegetable s are their prices and the world supply situation relative to that of competing products. In the industrial field, competition from synthetic substitutes may also be a factor. In the past decade, United Kingdom total consumption of s and fats has been increasing slowly and might be expected to continue to do so. Usage of vegetable s has, however, been declining in the face of increased availability of relatively cheaper animal s and fats, espacially fish s. C.5. Policies and measures affecting consumption Trade in vegetable s and seeds is in private hands and there are no governmental policies or measures directly affecting consumption.
