Realized Rainfall (30 th June to 13 th July 2016) Normal or above normal rainfall occurred during last two weeks in East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat region, Maharashtra and Telangana. Normal or above normal rainfall occurred in either of the last two weeks in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana & Delhi, West Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal & Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala. Below normal rainfall occurred in the last two weeks in Saurashtra & Kutch, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu. 2

Below normal rainfall is likely to occur during the next two weeks over West Rajasthan, Gujarat State, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Coastal Andhra Pradesh. 3

Kerala Strategic Agricultural Planning based on rainfall during next two weeks till 28 th July As indicated in the previous week, monsoon is going to weaker phase particularly over the central India in next week 1 (15-21 July). During this period the main rainfall belt will be over the northern parts of the country close to the foothills of the Himalaya and also over the parts of southern peninsula. During the week 2 (22 to 28th July) the rainfall belt is expected to be over the eastern and northeastern parts of the country and subdued over the remaining region. Southwest monsoon covered all parts of India on 13 th July. In view of the above, following advisories are issued. Statewise crop varieties are given in Annexure I. Major advisories for kharif crops Kerala received deficient rainfall during first week and normal during second week of previous fortnight, whereas, deficient rainfall activity is expected during first week and normal during second week of next fortnight. Completion of transplanting of Virippu rice by 3 rd week of July in Thiruvanathapuram, Kannur, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts with realised rainfall. Continuation of direct sowing of rice (Uma, Jyothy, Vyttila-6 varieties) in Alappuzha and Kottayam districts with realised rainfall. Provide adequate drainage in rice fields. Maintenance of water level of 2-5 cm in transplanted rice. Due to prevailing humid conditions, sheath blight and sheath rot in rice is noticed in Thiruvanathapuram district; spray Bavistin 200 gm/tilt (Propiconazol) @ 150 ml/ 200 litre of water as a control measure since it adversely affect the emergence of panicle and results in chaffy grains on a non-rainy day. Humid weather conditions are congenial for incidences of azhukal disease (capsule rot) and rhizome rot in cardamom in Wayanad and Idukki districts; spray Bordeaux mixture @ 500-100ml/plant to control azhukal disease (capsule rot) and apply Trichoderma to control rhizome rot on a non-rainy day. In hilly tracts there are chances for the yellowing of coconut leaves due to deficiencies of secondary and micro nutrients. This may bring bud rot disease, as weak palms may get infected easily. Apply lime @ 2 kg/palm. Apply 500g of Ayar (micro nutrient mixture) along with the recommended dose of NPK fertilizers, after two weeks of lime application. Eryophid mites is seen in the coconut. Spray neem oil garlic emulsion (20 ml neem oil+ 20 g garlic paste in 1 litre of water) as prophylactic measure against coconut eryophid mites. While spraying avoid the young inflorescence. Care should be taken to see that the spray fluid reaches the perianth region of the buttons Farmers are advised to provide propping to standing banana crop as there is chance of high wind speed in the coming dates. Clean the drainage channels. As there is chance of Pseudo stem weevil infestation farmers are advised to adopt strict phyto-sanitary measures. In varieties other than nendran farmers are advised to adopt proper control measures against the pseudo stem borer. 4

Karnataka Remove the dry outer sheaths of the pseudo stem of all the infested and uninfested plants. To control pseudostem weevil drench the leaf axils, with Chlorpyriphos 4g/l. In Black pepper, as a prophylactic measure spray 1% Bordeaux mixture for quick wilt /fungal diseases. Ensure proper drainage facility. The branches of support trees may be lopped off to allow penetration of sunlight and avoid build up of humidity. Apply Trichoderma mixture around the base of the vine to control foot rot. In Rubber plantation, take care of tapping panels in rain guarded plants. Spray Copper oxy chloride 4g/ 1 litre on new sprouts in newly planted gardens. Apply Indofil M 45 4g/1 litre of water on tapping panels. Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka received excess rainfall and North Interior Karnataka received deficient rainfall during first week, whereas deficient rainfall occurred over Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka and excess over North Interior Karnataka during second week of previous fortnight. Deficient rainfall is expected over Coastal Karnataka during next fortnight, normal/excess over South Interior Karnataka during next fortnight and deficient during first week and normal rainfall during second week of next fortnight over North Interior Karnataka. Coastal Karnataka Continuation of transplanting of rice in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district of Coastal Zone of Karnataka with realised rainfall. Continuation of transplanting of rice in Uttar Kannada district of Hill Zone with realised rainfall. Maintenance of optimum water level in rice fields. Arrange for drainage facility in maize in Uttar Kannada district. Intercultural operations / weeding in 25-35 days old maize and cotton crop in Uttar Kannada district in second week of next fortnight. Make use of farm pond water and this may be used for protective irrigation during the dry spell. South Interior Karnataka Completion of nursery sowing of rice, undertake main field preparation and transplanting of rice and sowing of red gram in Chickamagaluru, Hassan and Shivamogga districts of Southern Transition Zone utilizing realised rainfall. Nursery preparation for ragi and also direct sowing of ragi. Intercultural operations in already sown maize and red gram fields. Continuation of nursery sowing of rice and land preparation for transplanting of rice, and transplanting, completion of sowing of cowpea, green gram, black gram, sesame, jowar and and planting of black pepper in Kodagu, Mandya, Mysuru and Chamrajnagar districts of Southern Dry Zone utilizing realised and expected rainfall. Intercultural operations on non-rainy days in already sown cops to control the weeds and to conserve soil moisture in Mandya, Mysuru and Chamrajnagar districts. Removal of excess water from rice fields. Completion of sowing of red gram in Chickballapur, Kolar and Ramnagara districts, continuation of sowing of groundnut, maize, ragi, cowpea and castor with realised rainfall 5

in Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Ramnagara, Chickaballapura and Kolar districts of Eastern Dry Zone with receipt of sufficient rainfall Completion of sowing of cotton, minor millet, finger millet, jowar, continuation of sowing of red gram, sunflower and groundnut in Chitradurga, Davengere and Tumakuru districts of Central Dry Zone with realised rainfall. Intercultural operations and mulching in already sown crops to conserve soil moisture. Where ever sowing is not done Postpone sowing operation until soaking/sufficient rainfall received. Protective irrigation in already sown crops. North Interior Karnataka Main field preparation and transplanting of rice and completion of sowing of soybean, green gram and pigeon pea in Bidar district of North East Transition Zone. Completion of sowing of green, black gram, soybean, maize, groundnut, sorghum and cotton in Dharwad, Belagavi and Haveri districts of North Transition Zone. Intercultural operations in 25-30 days old soybean, green gram, black gram, sorghum, maize and groundnut crops. Application of irrigation in sugarcane crop in alternate rows. Continuation of puddling in the main field and transplanting of rice, completion of sowing of red gram, black gram, green gram, soybean, cotton and continuation of sowing of maize in Ballari, Kalaburgi, Koppal, Raichur and Yadgir district of North East Dry Zone. Completion of sowing of groundnut (spreading type), red gram, onion, castor, bajra, navane, cowpea and horse gram as solo crop in shallow black and red soils and also in medium black and deep black soils; intercropping of bajra + red gram in 2:1 row proportion or bajra + castor in 2:1 row proportion may be taken up to make efficient use of available soil and water resources and to get higher returns in Vijayapura and Bagalkote districts. Take up sowing of bajra, groundnut, red gram, castor, navane/savi, maize as solo crop and chilli + desi cotton, bajra + red gram (2:1 row proportion), navane/savi + red gram (2:1 row proportion) in shallow black and sand mixed black soil; sowing of groundnut (spreading type) as solo crop and chilli + onion as mixed crop in medium/deep black soils and sand mixed loamy soils in Gadag district of North Dry Zone with expected rainfall. Contingency Crop plan for Northern Karnataka Wherever sufficient profile-wetting rainfall is received, the following contingent measures are suggested to be taken up based on soil type and district concerned: Sowing of onion, sesamum, maize, soybean, sunflower, niger, castor, Bajra, groundnut (spreading), redgram, cotton, navane, horsegram, tobacco or cowpea may be taken up. Suitable varieties suggested for respective agroclimatic zone need to be selected. To reduce effects of extreme weather situations/ to reduce crop loss risk, the following intercrops are advised. bajra + redgram (2:1); maize + red gram (4:2), kharif sorghum + red gram (5:1), redgram + sesamum (1:2 or 2:4); red gram + horse gram (2:1) or chilli + desi cotton. In already sown areas if the crop is 15 to 20 days old, remove the excess and weak seedlings and take up repeated intercultivation so as to conserve the soil moisture. Soil and moisture conservation techniques such as compartment bunds, ridges and 6

Andhra Pradesh furrows across the slope are suggested for deep black soils earmarked for rabi crops. Spare some land exclusively for fodder crops or give preference for grain cum fodder crops. Coastal Andhra Pradesh received normal rainfall during first week and scanty rainfall during second week and Rayalaseema received scanty rain during previous fortnight. Deficient rainfall is expected over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and excess over Rayalaseema during next fortnight. Coastal Andhra Pradesh Completion of nursery sowing of rice, sowing of maize, millets, red gram, black gram, green gram and cotton in Krishna, Prakasam, Guntur and West Godavari districts of Krishna Godavari Zone with realised rainfall. Completion of nursery sowing and transplanting of rice and ragi in East Godavari district of High Altitude Tribal Zone with realised rainfall. Continuation of nursery sowing and direct sowing of rice, undertake main field preparation and transplanting of seedling with proper age. Continue planting of rainfed sugarcane, sowing of groundnut, red gram, green gram and black gram in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Vishakhapatnam districts of North Coastal Zone with realised rainfall. Rayalaseema As there is a forecast of less than normal rainfall during next week, following advisories are suggested: Mulching to reduce the moisture loss in standing crops. Continuation of intercultural operations for weed control and conserving soil moisture in June first week sown groundnut, red gram, bajra and castor crop in Anantpur district. Thinning in June first week sown red gram crop in Ananthapuram and Kurnool districts (if sufficient moisture is available in the soil). Protective irrigation to early sown groundnut crop which is at flowering to peg initiation stage in Chittoor, Cuddepah, Nellore districts and maize, cotton crops with the harvested rain water in farm ponds. Rainwater harvesting whenever rain is received and storing it in reservoirs for future use. Continuation of sowings groundnut, red gram, maize, jowar, bajra in Chittoor, Nellore and Kadappa districts and other pulses when there is enough moisture in the soil. Inter cropping of groundnut with red gram in 7:1 or 9:1 ratio and crops like jowar and maize can be taken up in 5-6 rows as border crops. Continuation of sowing of rainfed groundnut, red gram, bajra, korra and castor in Anantpur district and sowing of groundnut, sunflower, red gram, bajra, korra, black gram and castor in Kurnool district of Scarce Rainfall Zone with realised rainfall. Spraying of pre-emergence herbicide Pednimethalin 30% EC @ 1.3-1.6 litre/acre or Butachlor @ 1.25-1.5 litre/acre within the 48 hours after sowing of groundnut for effective weed control and in turn for soil moisture conservation. 7

Telangana Telangana received excess rainfall during previous fortnight, whereas deficient rain is expected during first week and normal during second week of next fortnight. Tamil Nadu Continuation of nursery sowing of short to medium duration rice varieties (Telangana Sona (RNR 15048) in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Khammam districts of North Telangana Zone and in Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Medak, Rangareddy and Warangal districts of Southern Telangana Zone with realised rainfall. Continuation of sowing of maize, soybean, green gram, red gram (as intercrop or main crop) and cotton in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Khammam districts of Northern Telangana Zone with realised rainfall. Sowing of cotton in red and black soils. Continuation of sowing of soybean, maize, red gram and Bt. cotton in Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Medak, Khammam, Rangareddy and Warangal districts of Southern Telangana Zone with realised rainfall. Intercultural operation and mulching in already sown crops for conservation of soil moisture. Supplementary irrigation by using micro-irrigation (sprinklers). Tamil Nadu received deficient rainfall during previous fortnight, whereas excess rainfall is expected during next fortnight. Continuation of transplanting of kuruvai rice and SRI cultivation in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Karur, Thiruvarur, Perambur, Trichy and Ariyalur districts of Cauvery Delta Zone. Planting of tea seedlings in Nilgiris district. Maintenance of 2-5 cm water level in rice field. Intercultural operation and mulching in already sown crops for conservation of soil moisture. Undertake the following contingency measures : If sowing not taken upto third week of July 2016, sowing of sorghum+ pulses (black gram/ green gram/ cowpea) is advocated instead of groundnut + pulses (red gram) + castor for Erode district. Pure crop of pearl millet/ green gram can be sown instead of dry rice /Ground nut for Tiruvallur district. SRI method of rice cultivation, maize with limited irrigation along with mulching, banana (leaf purpose) and chillies under drip irrigation with mulching can be recommended in the place of conventional paddy cultivation /banana for Thoothukudi district. Sorghum/pearl millet/horse gram can be sown instead of groundnut + pulses intercropping for Tiruppur district. Fodder sorghum / Minor millets/ fodder pearl millet/ fodder cowpea are advocated in the place of Pearl Millet / sorghum / gingelly /groundnut crops for Vellore district. Improved varieties of pearl millet / green gram/ horse gram can be sown instead of pearl millet (local)/ Gingelly/ Groundnut for Kancheepuram district. Sorghum and bajra can be replaced with short duration black gram in Tirunelveli district. Pearl millet / horse gram/ minor millets can be recommended to replace 8

groundnut / maize/ gingelly for Tiruvannamalai district. Do seed hardening before sowing. Use mechanical sowing with tractor drawn seed drill to speed up the sowing and to capture moisture for germination. Use of P 2 O 5 enriched FYM for basal application. Maharashtra Maharashtra and Goa received normal/excess rainfall during previous fortnight, whereas deficient/scanty rainfall is expected over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha during next fortnight. Konkan Completion of transplanting of 22-25 days old rice seedlings by 3 rd week of July in Raigad, Ratnagiri, Thane and Sindhudurg districts. Transplanting of 28-30 days old finger millet seedlings. Maintenance of 2-5 cm water level in transplanted rice. Drain out excess water from rice fields. Madhya Maharashtra Planting of Adsali sugarcane in Dhule, Nandurbar, Ahmednagar, districts. Recommended varieties: CO - 86032 (Nira) and Phule - 0265. Continuation of sowing of soybean, red gram, green gram and groundnut in vapsa condition in Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Solapur districts with realised rainfall. Drainout excess water from crop fields in Kolhapur district. Continue sowing of soybean at vapsa condition in Pune and Ahmednagar districts. Transplanting of rice in Nasik district. Continuation of sowing of cotton, maize, soybean, green gram and onion at vapsa condition in Nasik, Dhule, Nandurbar and Jalgaon districts with realised rainfall. Marathwada Completion sowing of cotton, soybean, green gram, black gram and sunflower in Nanded, Aurangabad, Latur, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli districts of Marathwada in vapsa condition with realised and expected rainfall during second week of next fortnight. Vidarbha Gujarat Completion of nursery sowing of kharif rice in Eastern Vidarbha Zone utilising realised rainfall. Complete sowing of cotton, red gram, black gram and green gram in Akola, Washim, Amravati, Wardha, Yavatmal, Buldhana and Wardha districts. Feasible risk minimizing intercropping systems include cotton + greengram/blackgram (1:1), pigeon pea + greengram / blackgram/soybean (1:2 / 2:4), sorghum + greengram/pigeonpea (3:3), Soybean + sorghum + pigeonpea (6:2:1), and three tier intercropping of cotton:sorghum:pigeonpea:sorghum at 6:1:1:1 or 3:1:1:1. Gujarat Region received normal rainfall and Saurashtra & Kutch received deficient/scanty during previous fortnight. Deficient/scanty rainfall is expected over Gujarat State during next fortnight. 9

Gujarat Region Due to subdued rainfall likely during next fortnight, undertake the following measures in Middle and North Gujarat zone. Intercultural operations like mulching in earlier sown cotton, groundnut and vegetable crops to conserve moisture. Protective irrigation is advised in the areas where sowing is completed. Completion of transplanting of rice, completion of sowing of red gram, millets, green gram, black gram, in Navasari, Dangs and Valsad districts of South Gujarat Heavy Rainfall Zone utilising realised rainfall. Continuation of sowing of pigeon pea and castor in Bharuch, Surat Narmada and Tapi district of South Gujarat Zone with realised and expected rainfall. Continuation of transplanting of rice, sowing of groundnut, pearl millet, green gram, black gram, cowpea, soybean and pigeon pea with realised and expected rainfall in Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Vadodara and Panchmahals districts of Middle Gujarat Zone. Take green gram, pigeon pea, guar as intercrop in pearl millet. Continuation of sowing of cotton, groundnut, pearl millet, sesame, maize, cluster bean, green gram and cowpea in Banaskantha, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Patan and Sabarkantha districts with realised and expected rainfall and in Banaskantha, Mehsana and Patan districts of North Gujarat Zone with receipt of sufficient rainfall. For late sowing, select erect GG-2 variety of groundnut. Intercropping of green gram, pigeon pea, guar in pearl millet is advised for getting more income. Recommended cultivars are : For South and Middle Gujarat region: Paddy: GR-8,9 and Gurjari can be taken. Fodder sorghum: S-1049, C-10-2 Sunflower: Modern, EC 68414 Cotton: Guj. Hy. Cotton-6, 8, 10, 12 and Desi cotton Early maturing Bt. Hybrid cotton and Intercropping: pearl millet + pigeon pea (2:1) are advised. For North Gujarat region: Sunflower: Modern, EC 68414 Black gram: T-9, Guj. Udid-1 Green gram: GM-4, K-851, Meha Saurashtra & Kutch Due to subdued rainfall likely during next fortnight, undertake the following measures. Intercultural operations, weeding and mulching to conserve soil moisture. Protective irrigation is advised in the areas where sowing is completed. Sowing of cotton, groundnut, pearl millet, sesame, maize, cluster bean, green gram and cowpea in Kachchh district of North West Zone with receipt of sufficient rainfall. Intercropping of green gram, pigeon pea, guar in pearl millet. Continuation of sowing of soybean, sesame, pigeon pea and castor in Junagadh and Porbandar districts of South Saurashtra Zone with realised rainfall. Intercultural operations, weeding and mulching to conserve soil moisture in the areas where sowing is completed. 10

Completion of transplanting of rice, continuation of sowing of cotton, pearl millet, groundnut, sesame, cluster bean, green gram and cowpea in Bhavnagar and Ahmedabad district. Carry out intercultural operation in already sown cotton to conserve soil moisture. Selection of short duration crops and varieties for sowing. Select bunch type groundnut varieties instead of spreading and semi spreading varieties. Continuation of sowing of castor, pigeon pea, groundnut, cotton, pearl millet, sesame, green gram, black gram and cowpea in Amreli, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Surendranagar districts of North Saurashtra Zone with realised rainfall. Arunachal Pradesh Excess rainfall occurred during first week whereas deficient rainfall occurred during second week of last fortnight. Normal rainfall is likely to occur during during next fortnight. Continue transplanting wetland rice. Undertake nipping in soybean with excessive vegetative growth. Complete earthing up in groundnut before 45-50 days after sowing. Also undertake gap filling in early sown crops. Undertake manual weeding in green gram / black gram. Assam & Meghalaya Assam Normal rainfall activity was observed during first week whereas deficient rainfall occurred during second week of last fortnight in Assam & Meghalaya. Excess rainfall is likely to occur during next fortnight. Transplanting of sali rice in Karbi Anglong, Barpeta, and Kamrup districts of Assam. Land preparation and transplanting of sali rice in Hailakandi and Karimganj districts. Complete transplanting of sali rice in Darrang district. Continuation of sowing of Arhar. Hand weeding in ginger field as there was plenty of rainfall during last couple of days in Darrang district and weeds grow vigorously in these weather conditions. In the flood affected areas, after receding of flood water go for wet seeding of sprouted rice where ever possible with short duration cultivars. In other case, plan for sowing of green gram, lentil, early rabi vegetables etc. Meghalaya Undertake transplanting of sali rice in all the districts of Meghalaya. Continuation of sowing of groundnut and soybean in all the districts of Meghalaya. Avoid water stagnation in the field, provide good drainage system. Normal to deficient rainfall occurred in last fortnight over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Normal rainfall is likely to occur during next fortnight. Manipur Maintain water level of 5-8 cm in 7 days old transplanted seedlings of kharif rice in all the districts of Manipur. Undertake weeding in kharif maize on a bright sunny day. 11

Undertake hand weeding, 30-35 days after sowing soybean. Also maintain proper drainage system to avoid water logging. Weeding and thinning of groundnut plants by keeping space of 30cm x 15cm. Mizoram Transplanting of kharif rice, two to three seedlings per hill. Remove unwanted plants by hand weeding in pre kharif rice. Maize is in tassling and silking stage.remove unwanted plant near base of the plant and cut dead branches. Sowing of kharif green gram, black gram and rajma. Tripura Nagaland West Bengal Undertake transplanting of aman rice in all the districts of Tripura. Maintain optimum water level in jhum rice in panicle initiation stage. Undertake weeding in maize field. Undertake weeding, 15-20 days after transplanting TRC/WRC rice. Cultivation of oilseed crops like soybean where paddy cultivation is not at all possible. Sowing should be done with a spacing of 45cm row to row and 10cm plant to plant. Scanty rainfall occurred in Sub Himalayan West Bengal and deficient in Gangetic West Bengal in later part of last fortnight. Excess to normal rainfall is likely to occur during next fortnight. Undertake transplanting of rice in Darjeeling district. Complete main field preparation for transplanting of rice in Bankura district. Undertake first weeding 25 days after sowing direct seeded rice in Bankura district. Continuation of transplanting of aman rice in Dakshin Dinajpur and Malda districts.
