We just love our organically farmed one acre vineyard, planted in front of a friend s house in 02. This is the 10th vintage we have bottled from the Admiral s Vineyard. We picked even riper in 2015 than we did in 2014, pressed whole cluster and fermented cold in stainless steel. The 2015 vintage is surprisingly round and full, all while maintaining bright acidity. The growing season was even and warm, flowing into a moderate, dry fall. The standout characteristic for 2013 wines: complete ripeness without high sugar levels. The wines are powerful and concentrated. The worry in Santa Barbara is about the drought. The lack of rainfall has positive quality implications, but we need winter rains to recharge our aquifers and cleanse our soils. I am not a fan of those fruit forward passion fruit, grapefruit Sauvignon Blancs, nor am I a fan of those grassy, pyrazine-driven Sauvignon Blancs. Pied a Terre's Sauvignon Blanc has restrained, subtle aroma of lime and sour green apple. The fruit sources are largely responsible for this style as the grapes come from two vineyards in Bennett Valley (Denmark Street and Frostwatch), an area known for cool climate wines. Pied à Terre Sauvignon Blanc did not undergo malolactic fermentation, resulting in a wine with a PH just shy of 3 and total acidity of over 7. Given that, I felt that the wine needed wood aging to tame its (potentially) savage nature. However, I dislike wines in which the wood dominates so I aged the wine for 7 months in French barriques, of which only 10 percent were new (the balance was composed of 2-, 3-, and 4-year-old, used French barrels).
