We feel good about recycling, walking when we can, and going green. We also feel good about going to an eco-friendly salon that specializes in all natural pro vegan hair products, like Chi and Surface. And let s face it, the free beer and wine with service are always enjoyed. But there are even more reasons to visit the cozy, relaxed, down home feel of Boho Salon. Their staff is the only staff in this area recognized on a national level. You have seen owner Bradley Tuggle on QVC numerous times and in countless magazine appearances, and now Boho Salon welcomes Macrey Huff to the fold. Yes, that Macrey Huff from Style TV s hit reality show, Chicagolicious. Macrey joins a talented group of professionals that include Ashley Fields, Marjie Taylor, and Amber Beal. So, think about it--if you are going to be a new bride or you have an important event coming up in your life, would you not want to go to people that have collaborated with celebrities such as Joan Rivers, Christina Milian, and Josie Maran? Boho Salon is also the only salon in North Carolina that has an affiliation with both the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. So do your hair and the environment a favor. Visit Boho Salon in downtown Greensboro. You really do not need another reason. Detailed event information available at www.336events.com 6

New to the Triad A spotlight on new local businesses here in the Piedmont. By Louis Money Well, 2013 was definitely a year for growth professionally here in the Triad. Not only did the Triad welcome in a new, hip, professionally aimed fun magazine (I will now stop with the shameless self-promotion), but we also have quite a few new neighbors in the area. Here are a few I would like to mention: (Glass Door Salon) Glass Door Salon, which is located inside the Embassy Suites in downtown Winston- Salem, is the only full service salon and spa in downtown. Erin Blakley was attending UNC- Charlotte when she met her husband Andy in an art class. Erin began working at a salon that was located where Glass Door Salon is now in 2008 after graduating from Carolina Beauty College, and is now the owner just five years later. The Glass Door provides a full array of hair, makeup, skin care, nail, waxing, and massage services. They also offer the Dry Styling bar which is perfect if you have dinner plans or a hot date after work. A professional stylist will help you look your best in about fifteen minutes. The Glass Door plans to introduce customizable manicures and pedicures with a long list of scrubs in the very near future. The Vines Winery and Fuzion Grill is located on West Market Street in Greensboro where Zali Mongolian Grill used to be. The new owners have kept the Mongolian Grill and are also adding new Mediterranean items all the time. In the open kitchen, everything is prepared by old world profiles. The Vines also has an off the chart MONDAY JANUARY 6 The Mad Platter: MOMMY & ME Free Studio time Cultural Arts Center: Auditions for To Kill a Mocking Bird TUESDAY JANUARY 7 Community Arts Cafe: SONGWRITERS OPEN MIC w/ Martin Buchanan The Mad Platter: $2 studio fee Cultural Arts Center: Auditions for To Kill a Mocking Bird Thistle Stop Wine Shop: Free Wine Tastings Local House Bar: Local House Live Music WEDNESDAY JANUARY 8 BUSINESS NETWORKING Technology Center of the Piedmont: Lunch & Learn Stumble Stilskins: Mancub Trivia Turntable: Local Mic Wednesdays hosted by Nick Wes THURSDAY JANUARY 9 Community Arts Cafe: UNDERGROUND JAZZ JAM with the UNDERGROUND JAZZ QUARTET Blu Martini: Complimentary Food Boiler Room: DJ and Dance - No Cover Local House Bar: Thirsty Thursdays with DJ Black Rhino FRIDAY JANUARY 10 BUSINESS NETWORKING PIEDMONT CLUB CONVERSATIONS IN LEADERSHIP: Panel Discussion with Mayor Allen Joines, Dr. Beverly Emory, and Keith Vaughan Blu Martini: Complimentary Food Boiler Room: DJ and Dance - No Cover Coopers Ale House: Second Glance Electric Blue: TROUBADOURS MIRAGE: Monster Jam after party Stumble Stilskins: Fresh Fridays Top 40 DJ SATURDAY JANUARY 11 High Point Museum: Bread & Butter Making in the Historical Park Jeffery Adams on 4th: Tour De Food - Winston Salem Vintage Theatre: Swing Dance Greensboro Science Center: Indiana Bones and the Kingdom of the Camarasaur Greensboro Science Center: KATS: The Meerkat Musical Vintage Theatre: Swing Dance Coopers Ale House: Kay Brothers Electric Blue: Ross Coppley and Jonny Mont MIRAGE: Monster Jam after party Turntable: The Alaskan Whalers Detailed event information available at www.336events.com 9
selection of extreme wines, champagnes, craft beers, and martinis. The ambiance and attitude also makes this new restaurant a welcome addition to Greensboro. (Vines Winery Fuzion Grill Dining Room) Local House Bar is located behind the left field wall of Newbridge Bank Park (Grasshoppers stadium) in downtown Greensboro. I stumbled (as I seem to do from time to time) in there on their first night opening. I think it brings almost a dive bar feel to downtown, which is something that downtown Greensboro has been sorely lacking. Local House Bar lives up to its name by providing a second home to locals. Live acoustic music on Tuesdays, DJ s spinning every Thursday and Saturday, and when there is no music you will be entertained by the jukebox, sports, and skeeball!!!!!! (Local House bar) Blu Margarita is also located in downtown Greensboro at 403 North Elm Street. In its short existence, I have managed to visit three times. Blu Margarita serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and has a full bakery. They are more upscale than your average Mexican restaurant, but they are by no means pricey. They provide (blue margarita) have ever had. The staff was very friendly and the hostess explained to me that their mixes used in their drinks are all home made. I was very impressed and will be back. Other new businesses in the Triad: Clemmons Salon & Spa: Paparazzi Hair Salon - 6000 Meadowbrook Mall Ct. Growing up, my sister and I would often spend time in the kitchen, watching my mother cook. She always made everything from scratch and had some sort of system that worked like clockwork. She knew the best places to go to get lamb and who had a special on trout. We would watch as she turned on the oven, poured oil into a skillet began dicing and slicing, and before I knew it, I had salmon topped with an orange marinade sauce sitting in front of me. However, cooking is an art form, and like many forms of art, you must practice, practice, and practice. My first home cooked meal was Mac n Cheese that came in a box. I m not sure how I messed that up, but later that night, I had noodles in a cheese-flavored soup. Not letting that deter me, I continued to search for new recipes to try and I kept practicing. It s been five years since my Mac n Cheese soup. I have made a wide variety of meals including Cheese Stuffed Tomatoes, Tilapia Florentine, and Bourbon Chicken. A lot of the recipes I use come from my mother, word of mouth, and Google. I am starting this column to share my favorite recipes with the Triad and encourage others to cook with love, for the ones that matter most in their life. Chicken Bacon Roulades Yield: Serves 4. INGREDIENTS 4 shallots, thinly sliced 10 bacon slices (about 1/2 pound) 4 skinless boneless chicken breast halves (about 1 1/2 pounds total) Lemon pepper seasoning to taste (or ground black pepper with a little lemon zest) 6 Tbsp. grated Parmesan (about 1 ounce) 1 Tbsp. olive oil 1 clove of garlic, minced 1/3 cup dry white wine 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter 1 1/2 Tbsp. flour 1 1/4 cups chicken broth 1/4 cup heavy cream Cooking with Love Detailed event information available at www.336events.com 12 By Maria Sollecito- Olson 1 Working in batches, cook the bacon over medium heat in an ovenproof heavy skillet, until lightly brown but still flexible (not crisp). Place the bacon on paper towels to drain. Cook the shallots in the remaining bacon fat over low heat, stirring, until softened. Transfer shallots with a slotted spoon to a small bowl and leave any fat remaining in skillet. Preheat oven to 300 F. 2 Place each chicken breast half between 2 sheets of plastic wrap. With smooth side of a meat pounder pound each breast to 1/8-inch thickness. Discard plastic from boned side of each breast. Sprinkle chicken with lemon pepper (or ground black pepper and a little lemon zest) and salt. Place 2 1/2 slices of bacon lengthwise (parallel with grain of flesh) along middle of each breast. Top with shallots and Parmesan. Using plastic wrap to help you, tightly roll up each breast lengthwise, tucking in the ends to enclose the filling. Secure seams with wooden toothpicks 3 Add 1 Tbsp. olive oil to reserved fat in skillet and heat over medium high heat. Brown roulades on all sides, about 5 minutes total. Transfer the roulades to a smaller pan and place in the middle of oven. Don t wash the skillet yet! Bake roulades until just cooked through, 20 to 25 minutes. 4 Transfer chicken to a plate with tongs and keep warm, covered with aluminum foil. Pour off fat from skillet. Add wine to the skillet and deglaze over medium high heat, scraping up brown bits. Boil wine until reduced to about 1 tablespoon. Add garlic and butter. Cook mixture over medium low heat, stirring, for 1 minute. Add flour and cook roux, stirring, 1 minute. Add broth and cream and bring to a boil, whisking. Simmer the sauce, whisking, 2 minutes. Pour through a fine mesh sieve into a small saucepan. Keep sauce warm. Remove the wooden toothpicks from roulades and cut crosswise into 1/2-inch slices. Spoon some sauce in center of each of 4 plates and arrange roulade slices decoratively on sauce. Next month: Rack of Lamb served with a Cherry Glaze Sauce. Featured Local Artist Frank Russell by Jim Tedder I see all life as a collage of found objects: experiences, ideas, desires, acquired skills. Are not all relationships: significant, personal, casual or professional, whatever, simply found or discovered as we move through this world? Are they not transformed by our decisions to collect or contemplate or care for them? I feel that nothing is wasted in awakened love s economy... Frank Russell Presented by 411 W. 4th St. Winston-Salem www.communityartscafe.com Frank Russell, currently living in Oak Ridge, is best know for his found object fish sculptures, but has been involved in other artistic photo by Martin Tucker areas for many years prior to developing his marine life creations. Russell has been painting for almost 40 years, and during that time he was also a graphic artist, a picture framer, a TV art director and musician. I still tell folks I am a painter FIRST and a junksmith second... Currently he is exhibiting a solo show named FRANK RUSSELL HAS CRABS AGAIN at Red Dog Gallery in Winston Salem, and he also has a 9 sculpture of a Marlin mounted atop a kiosk on corner of 6th and Trade. It looks fabulous, if I must say so myself. Russell will be the solo artist at Southern Lights in Greensboro from December 15th through March 15, and will have oodles of fresh work passing through there! Southern Lights was the very first venue for Russell s fish sculptures! Fine restaurant...cool art. After 9 years as owner/operator of Artmongerz Gallery in Greensboro, Russell sold out to three of the gallery s resident artists to pursue other interests. Now I can focus on what I am SUPPOSED TO BE: a junk artist. I feel my work is already improving. I am also making time to paint canvas! Frank Russell s work can also be found on his website at www.theartmaker.com. Detailed event information available at www.336events.com 17
Facebook: Should I Sell My Product Or Service On Facebook? F-commerce or Facebook Commerce is becoming more and more popular and attractive to small business owners. All aspects of using a social media site should be leveraged to drive profit everything from advertising to facilitate sales on your own ecommerce website to selling directly to your fans on Facebook. Facebook commerce was initially focused on sales conversions directly from the Facebook page. However, people don t usually log into Facebook to shop. What e-commerce business owners need to know before venturing into the world of social commerce, though, is that selling on Facebook is a different experience than most expect it to be. Using Facebook to sell products or services is a smart idea. However, it should be one of the various marketing channels that you utilize to connect with your customer segment. One should have crafted a well- defined social commerce strategy, and Facebook would be one of the tactical approaches taken in that social commerce strategy. In view of such a tremendous opportunity to sell directly from your Facebook page, here are a few simple rules to follow. Build Your Customer Base First Research has shown that companies that had an established customer base before they tried to sell from their Facebook page outsell their competition by as much as 2,000%. Many start-up or new market entrants in various market segments launch on Facebook first and then open for business. These companies do not seem to have as much success. Engage With Your Audience Before You Try To Sell To Them Be sure that your fans are aware of your Detailed event information available at www.336events.com 18 product, service, or overall brand before you try to push your product or service onto them. It will take a while before your fans are truly engaged enough to consider your product or service, but it is well worth the investment of time and marketing effort to engage your fans. Because they are your Facebook fans they will want to at least explore your product or service, so be sure that your Facebook page makes it as easy as possible for them to do so. You should look to communicate your value proposition in a clear and concise manner. Make It Easy To Buy An emerging market trend is mobile shopping, which makes it very easy for people to shop using mobile devices. Facebook, in looking to leverage this trend, has rolled out a service called Facebook Auto Fill. Facebook has partnered with payment providers, which has allowed them to add a feature that is basically a social identity layer that sits on top of the payment provider s e-commerce app, which most people may already be using. Once your fan has committed to the purchase, an Auto Fill With Facebook button will take you out of the e-commerce application directly to your personal Facebook account, where you have likely previously entered your credit card information. Easy Enough! To find out more about other interesting emerging market technology trends, be sure to visit our website to register to attend Technology Tuesday And Thursdays each month. http://www.technologycenteronline. net The Business Creation Model: Mondays Jan 27 - March 10 at the Greensboro Public Library (Downtown Branch) 6pm (see ad on page 19)

Networking 108: New Year & New Networking Goals Welcome to 2014, folks. I hope you make this year fabulous! But before you get started, you need to have your networking plan in place. Having a networking plan focused on creating success is critical. We don t plan to fail, yet many of us fail to plan properly. So, what is your 2014 networking plan? by Teddy Burriss - Networking Strategist documents? Good for you - leave these in the office. They are not for networking. Remember, Networking is for connecting and building mutually beneficial relationships. These are the basic activities for a successful Networking Plan. Depending on your goals, you may have other deliberate and relevant ideas. In summary, make sure your Networking Plan has some combination of: Does your plan include IRL (in real life) networking groups? If so, which ones? If you do decide to get involved in networking groups, what are you going to do every week and/or every month as a member of the group? Are you budgeting time in your networking plan to attend and volunteer at the meetings. Have you budgeted time every week to have coffee, sweet tea, and/or soda with new members and those you have not talked with in a while? What local events do you plan to attend this year? Have you done research on the upcoming 336Events, Linking Winston-Salem & Linking Greensboro events, Civic Group activities and charitable events? Please consider putting these type of events on your calendar. They are great places to volunteer, meet, and help other people. Does your networking plan include time to reach out to people you have not talked to in some time (your weak ties)? These folks may be able to help you with your goals in life, career, business, and community-but only if you reach out, listen to them, and reconnect. Your weak ties are important to you, so put time on your calendar to reconnect. Will you carve out time on your calendar for social networking? Every successful networking plan must include time to connect and engage with your network through social media. At a minimum you should consider spending 15 minutes a day on LinkedIn deliberately connecting, collaborating, contributing, cramming, and creating new relationships. Read the book, Success using Social Media, if you need help wit this task. Put social networking time on your calendar and watch how it grows your network. Participate in Real Life Networking Groups Meet new people at Local Networking Events Lots of coffee, sweet tea, and soda time with new contacts Time to reconnect with your weak ties Deliberate Social networking activity Make lots of new connections, develop mutually beneficial relationships, and look for opportunities. When you get your 2014 Networking Plan built and you believe you can do it, get started. This educational series is brought to us by Teddy Burriss, a world renowned Social Networking Coach. Teddy teaches Networking for Mutual Benefit and Building Relationships through Social Media. Teddy is an accomplished author, public speaker, avid social media engager and blogger.
