Tubestock Trader February 2018 Geranium Anne Thomson Geranium 'Rothbury Red' Geranium 'Ann Folkard' Geranium pratense 'Summer Skies' T/C Gentiana scabra 'Zuki-rindo' Syzygium australe 'Pretty Pilly' PBR Clive s Comments What happened? It feels like Christmas was a decade ago already. All the food and family just came and went. Calories seem to hang around for long after the memories do. It also seems that one Christmas finishes and we start planning for the next one. Also at this time of the year we have the usual debate over Australia Day and when it should be celebrated. Personally I think it should be the last Monday in January as this would stop the sickie habit when it is a Tuesday-Thursday. Also gives some certainty. Not sure if it satisfies those who feel it cashes with Indigenous culture. I think that they will never stop wanting it changed and the argument will be there every year and if we do it on the last Saturday it helps. Then there is the other discussion point that seems to flare up emotions: When do we start buying Easter chocolates and Hot Cross Buns? I think the chocolates can wait until a month or so before Easter but the buns are really nice and should be available all year. Saw one ad at Woolworths that said The taste is too good to wait. Agreed. 2018 has a few state elections (Tasmania, SA and Victoria) which should keep the media alive with lots of issues. Victoria will be focused on crime security with a bit of time on roads. We hope that the Eastwest link will be commited to as we desperately need the road. I suppose the other states will be the same with Power costs a key element in some regions. Could be an interesting year for many of us. What we really need is some political motivation to actually look at the costs imposed on small businesses: wages, penalty rates, public holidays, power charges, government taxes and rates. I am not sure why the politicians cannot see that if they reduce costs to the small business sector then it... Continued on page 4

Larkman Nurseries Pty Ltd February 2018 4 Clive s Comments continued will filter through to lower costs at retail level. One thing is sure, they will all be telling us their policies will create more jobs. Wow, we have many businesses in our region that are constantly looking for staff. Not just labouring jobs but trades, white collar, retail and hospitality to name a few. What the country really needs is a way to motivate the unemployed to take up, and keep, full time employment. For many of us the idea of being unemployed is not acceptable yet for many people now it is almost a badge of honour. This is what we need to change. Unfortunately making welfare too hard to get or too low tends to punish those that need it as well as those that don t. I would like to see it harder to get but really feel we need to change the culture. Summer is nearly over, kids are back at school and Christmas debt is being repaid which means people will be returning to the garden. There is a definite shift in younger people to get in touch with plants. Not the traditional home garden but the edible and indoor gardens are what is catching their interest. Any interest is good and will help our industry. The whole that we are not addressing is the demand for plants in pots due to a large number of apartment dwellers and an increase in the rental sector. Other parts of the world do not see renting as a reason not to garden. In Australia most tenants see planting in the garden as a benefit to the landlord so they don t do it. Our industry needs to work on getting these folk to understand that a healthy garden (in ground or in pots) benefits them more so than the land owner. They have the satisfaction and peace of mind growing plants gives. They can also grow edible/usable pants which makes life better and healthier. It also improves the appearance of the home which is why so many people spend so much time decorating. Win-win-win. Just need to get their plant-life balance back in line. Any time we can promote this sort of gardening to schools, clubs etc we should do so. We rely on a continual influx of new gardeners to keep our businesses sustainable Hope summer was fun and autumn is looking good for sales. For those of you in Victoria in March remember we have our Herb and Chilli Festival on the 17 th /18 th.
