About Growing Futures Early Education Center Growing Futures Early Education Center, formerly Head Start of Shawnee Mission, is a not-for-profit organization providing quality early education opportunities and family support services for children in Johnson County, Kansas. Growing Futures opened its doors in 195 as a Head Start summer enrichment program for 17 preschool-aged children from low-income families. Today, we serve over 50 low-income children and their families with Early Head Start and Head Start programs. In addition, we offer opportunities for any family to benefit from our quality early education program with competitive rates and no income eligibility requirements. Although our program has grown since 195 to meet the increasing needs of Johnson County families, our funding has not kept pace with the demand for services. During the past decade, Johnson County s population grew by 0%, while at the same time, the number of people living in poverty increased by 13%. Growing Futures regularly maintains a waitlist of more than 100 children. (SOC), a 501(c) (3) organization, headquartered in Prairie Village, KS. The SOC is committed to supporting Kansas City children s charities (raising funds and awareness of), providing a unique function for the community and enjoying fraternity among its members. New for 019 Simple Beginnings It all started when a couple of SOC founding members were craving boiled crawfish back in 001. These two crawfish enthusiasts held their first annual boil inviting 30 people to share a hundred pounds of live crawfish flown from New Orleans to Kansas City for the party. The challenge was their friends didn t know how to peel the little crustaceans so a lot of time was spent giving peeling lessons. Those same friends are now skilled peelers and connoisseurs. This year, the Overland Park South Rotary Club is the co-producer and host of the Village Crawfish Festival. The Overland Park South Rotary Club has a rich history of raising funds to support children s charities in greater Kansas City. From 1989 to 017, the Club produced Jazz in the Woods, which since the event s inception, allowed the Club to donate more than $1,500,000 to local children s charities.
