G R A N D T A S T E V I N O R D E R March 2019 A Note From Rick Rick with his granddaughters, June (left) and Vivian (right), at Fe Ciega Vineyard WE HAVE AN ARRAY OF EXCEPTIONAL wines from the past and present in this, the first GTO Wine Club shipment of 2019. The Library wine releases are the 2011 Pinot Noir, Fe Ciega Vineyard, and the 2012 Syrah, Alisos Vineyard, both of which live up to our winery s reputation for producing wines that can age for many years. The new releases include another delightful Pink Wine, Cuvée June & Vivian, a blend of Tempranillo & Syrah with a touch of Pinot Grigio & Albariño. Our two robust red releases are the 2017 Pinot Noir, Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, and a special 24-case release of our first Merlot in 16 years! Most garagiste wineries don t produce wines in this small quantity. We have received texts, emails and photos from members who have had the patience and ability to age some of our wines. Hearing from you that you have enjoyed our wines is the most rewarding part of this business. Thank you for your membership and we hope to hear from you, or better yet, see you at our tasting room this year. Cheers, Rick Longoria, Winemaker G r a n d T a s t e v i n O r d e r M a r c h 2 0 1 9

These are the GTO releases for March 2019. The wines included in your shipment vary according to your Wine Club selection. The cost for each shipment includes the price of the wine, less your Wine Club discount, plus packaging, shipping and appropriate sales tax, when applicable. R i c k s Winemaker Notes 2018 PINK WINE Santa Ynez Valley - Cuvée June & Vivian IN 2007, DIANA AND I INTRODUCED A PINK WINE, OR ROSÉ, to commemorate the birth of our first granddaughter, June. In 2016 we were blessed with our second granddaughter, Vivian. We happily renamed our pink wine to celebrate both of our granddaughters. The weather during the 2018 growing season and harvest reverted to the weather patterns I had frequently experienced in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. This relatively mild and even weather allowed the grapes to hang on the vine longer to develop fuller flavors without compromising acidity. As in 2017, this cuvée is based on Tempranillo and Syrah, but this year small amounts of Pinot Grigio and Albariño were blended in to add complexity to the aromas and strengthen the acid structure. The final blend was filtered and bottled in January 2019. The wine has a beautiful pale pink, salmon color and delicate aromas of cantaloupe, strawberries and rose petals. On the palate the wine is light to medium-bodied with flavors of melons and cherries that leave a satisfying and refreshing finish. Perfect for summer picnics, this rosé will also pair well with a roasted beet salad with goat cheese, grilled shrimp or spaghetti with mussels. Serve moderately chilled. COMPOSITION: Tempranillo (42%), Syrah (48%), Pinot Grigio (6%), Albariño (4%) VINEYARD SOURCE: Clover Creek PRODUCTION: 66 cases ALCOHOL BY VOLUME: 13.2% ph: 3.28 TITRATABLE ACIDITY: 0.59 g/100 ml. CELLARING POTENTIAL: Nine to twelve months BOTTLE PRICE: $22.00 2017 PINOT NOIR Sta. Rita Hills - Sanford & Benedict Vineyard I VE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF MAKING WINE FROM THE FAMED Sanford & Benedict Vineyard since 1985. The exceptional wines I have been able to produce from this vineyard continue to inspire me. The 2017 growing season was very similar to 2016, with moderate heat in late August that hastened the Pinot Noir grapes development. The grapes were 100% destemmed and crushed into a small open-top fermenter. After cold soaking for three days the must was inoculated with yeast to start fermentation. 14 days later the wine was pressed off, settled in a tank, and racked to French oak barrels for aging. Approximately 30% of the wine aged in new barrels. After 14 months of barrel aging, the wine lightly filtered, but not fined. The wine has a very dark ruby color with purple edges. The aromas are of ripe raspberries with hints of cloves and nutmeg in the background. On the palate it becomes evident that this is a very full-bodied Pinot Noir with rich, extracted flavors of raspberries and currants. Substantial, yet silky tannins are beautifully balanced with the density of the flavors. This full-bodied Pinot Noir will pair well with variety of foods including seared duck breast in Pinot Noir sauce, creamy mushroom risotto or roast pork loin with garlic and rosemary. I recommend decanting the wine 30-45 minutes prior to serving. COMPOSITION: 100% Pinot Noir, Dijon 777 Clone VINEYARD SOURCE: Sanford & Benedict PRODUCTION: 83 cases ALCOHOL BY VOLUME: 15.6% ph: 3.54 TITRATABLE ACIDITY: 0.63 g/100 ml. CELLARING POTENTIAL: Five to seven years BOTTLE PRICE: $50.00 G r a n d T a s t e v i n O r d e r M a r c h 2 0 1 9

R i c k s Winemaker Notes, continued 2016 MERLOT Santa Barbara County - Alisos Vineyard MY EXPERIENCE WITH PRODUCING MERLOT in Santa Barbara County reaches back 40 years. I started bottling a varietal Merlot under the Longoria label in 1992, but stopped in 2000, partly due to the market s response to how Merlot was unfairly portrayed in the movie Sideways. Without a doubt, my favorite source for Merlot is Alisos Vineyard, located a few miles east of Los Alamos. The 2016 vintage was so exceptional that I was moved to bottle one barrel to exemplify the wine s extraordinary potential. The Merlot grapes were harvested on September 30th with a sugar content of 25.0 Brix. The grapes were 100% destemmed and crushed into a small open-top fermenter. After cold soaking for four days, the must was inoculated with yeast to start fermentation. After 14 days the wine was pressed off, settled and racked to French oak barrels, of which 21% were new. After 21 months of aging, the wine was fined, filtered and bottled in July 2018. The wine has an extremely dark red, opaque color and brooding aromas of ripe figs, black cherries and vanillin. The palate is greeted with rich flavors of black cherries and anise. The strong tannins indicate the wine will benefit from extended bottle aging. This robust wine will pair well with hearty meals including grilled flat iron steak with blue cheese butter, roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic or stuffed Portobello mushrooms with crisped goat cheese. COMPOSITION: Merlot Alisos Vineyard (97%) Cabernet Sauvignon Happy Canyon Vineyard (3%) PRODUCTION: 24 cases ALCOHOL BY VOLUME: 14.8% ph: 3.78 TITRATABLE ACIDITY: 0.59 g/100 ml. CELLARING POTENTIAL: Seven to ten years BOTTLE PRICE: $48.00 G r a n d T a s t e v i n O r d e r M a y 2 0 1 9

L i b r a r y Releases LIBRARY RELEASE: 2011 PINOT NOIR Sta. Rita Hills - Fe Ciega Vineyard I M ALWAYS EXCITED TO RELEASE A LIBRARY SELECTION OF Fe Ciega Pinot Noir. Not only is it rewarding to share our estate Pinot with our club members, it also gives me an opportunity to taste the wine and see how it is developing. The color has barely changed from when it was bottled. There is only the slightest hint of brown color developing around the edges of the wine. The aromas are a little shy in the beginning but with ten minutes or so of airing, complex aromas of wet earth, fruitcake, black cherries and a hint of brown sugar come forth in the glass. On the palate the wine is elegant with taut flavors similar to the aromas. The higher than typical acid structure of this vintage gives the wine a more classic Burgundian vibe than most other vintages. I suggest decanting the wine 30 minutes prior to serving. This wine will accompany a variety of dishes such as Portobello penne pasta casserole, garlic herb roasted chicken or cedar planked salmon COMPOSITION: 100% Pinot Noir VINEYARD SOURCE: Fe Ciega ORIGINAL PRODUCTION: 326 cases LIBRARY QUANTITY: 14 cases ALCOHOL BY VOLUME: 14.2% ph: 3.27 TITRATABLE ACIDITY: 0.64 g/100 ml. CELLARING POTENTIAL: Additional four to six years BOTTLE PRICE: $75.00 LIBRARY RELEASE: 2012 SYRAH Santa Barbara County - Alisos Vineyard I ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO REVISITING OLDER VINTAGES OF our Alisos Vineyard Syrah and I m always amazed at how little the wine has developed. This is a tribute to the intense density and structure of the wine. The color is still a dark ruby with purple edges and has hardly changed from when the wine was released. The aromas are of ripe black cherries with a strong anise component. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied with an exquisite balance of flavor, tannins and acidity that give the wine an unexpected vibrancy. The tannins are still strong, which indicates that the wine needs many more years of bottle aging. This intense and complex Syrah will accompany a wide variety of rich, flavorful dishes such as red wine-braised short ribs, Osso Bucco or fine cuts of beef such as filet mignon. I recommend decanting the wine for 45-60 minutes prior to serving. COMPOSITION: 100% Syrah VINEYARD SOURCE: Alisos ORIGINAL PRODUCTION: 58 cases LIBRARY QUANTITY: 14 cases ALCOHOL BY VOLUME: 15.0% ph: 3.56 TITRATABLE ACIDITY: 0.61 g/100 ml.
