When to Harvest Home Grown Vegetables

Transcription:

Beans: Green, Pole Variety: Blue Lake Organic Phaseolus vulgaris Days to Harvest: 55 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Stringless, unusually smooth, famous for it's freezing and canning qualities. Stronger flavour than the bush variety and about 6-7 long. Large numbers of dark green pods are round, tender and meaty. Long bearing for high yields. For fresh market, canning, freezing. For a continuous supply of fresh beans, sow every 15 days from June 1st until the end of July. Do not plant too early, beans do not grow well in cool soil (below 16`C). Contents: approx. 150 seeds Beans: Runner, Pole Variety: Scarlet Organic Phaseolus coccineus Days to Harvest: 75 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. A very old favourite that produces beautiful bright red flowers that hummingbirds love. Fat, slightly fuzzy pods have a richer, beanier flavour than snap green beans. Runner beans are botanically different than regular pole beans. They prefer cool summer weather and will drop their blossoms if it gets too hot. They need more moisture and cooler roots all summer. Contents: approx. 45 seeds Beet: Round Red Detroit Supreme Organic Beta vulgaris Days to Harvest: 59 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Classic heritage variety known for its deep red globe shaped roots with smooth skin and medium tops. The leaves are dark green with red veins and a small crown. Excellent colour for fresh market and canning Contents: approx. 600 seeds Beets: Round Yellow Golden Beet Organic Phaseolus vulgaris Days to Harvest: 55 Beets are a rich golden-yellow and very sweet. A beautiful beet that won't bleed like red beets do, great in salads! Greens are also very tasty. A favorite of many. Touchstone is more popular due to reported better germination, but we prefer this heritage golden for it's superior flavour. This variety dates back to the 1820's. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Contents: approx. 125 seeds Broccoli: Big Head OP Variety: OBF Green Goliath Organic Brassica oleracea (italica group) Days to Harvest: 48 CROP FAILURE! Our favorite big head broccoli. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Green Goliath outperformed all the other varieties we have grown, including the hybrids. These seeds come from Green Goliath plants but some pollen may have come from another impressive big head broccoli research project from Oregon State University. Expect non-uniformity in maturity, resulting in a longer harvest period. Contents: CROP FAILURE! Carrot: Nantes, Coreless Variety: OBF Scarlet Nantes Organic Daucus Carota var. sativus Days to Harvest: 68 We overwintered our carrot patch and when I dug the carrots in the spring, I took a bite out of each carrot to select the 100 sweetest with good old-fashioned carrot flavour. These were replanted for the seed crop. This popular and dependable coreless carrot is an adaptable workhorse that often outperforms some of the more finicky hybrids. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Contents: approx. 750 seeds (1g) Carrot: Specialty Variety: Dragon Daucus Carota var. sativus Days to Harvest: 90 CROP FAILURE! The sweetest purple carrot we have grown! 9" Dragon carrots are covered in a reddish purple skin over a bright orange core. An outstanding source of antioxidants, vitamins and lycopene. Dragon is an eye-catcher steamed or sliced in salads. It does well in cool moist conditions. Contents: CROP FAILURE!

Corn: Sweet Variety: Double Standard Organic Zea mays Days to Harvest: 73 Excellent traditional corn taste. The first bicolor, open pollinated sweet corn. Early maturing, with strong germination in cool soil. JSS developed this hardy corn for northern home gardeners, especially seed saving enthusiasts. It is based on a nice yellow corn called Burnell (1900s) and an early white heirloom from the St. Lawrence Valley. (OBF grown seed not yet available) Cucumber: Slicing Variety: Diva Cucumis sativus Days to Harvest: 65 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Especially flavorful when harvested small or large. Diva produces distinctly tender, crisp, sweet, and bitter-free cukes. Plants are parthenocarpic (grow fruits without pollination) and therefore are not overly seedy. Foliage is nonbitter, hence not as attractive to cucumber beetles as some varieties. Very disease resistant; adapted to open field production and protected cropping. AAS winner. Contents: approx. 40 seeds Cucumber: Specialty Variety: Dragons Egg Cucumis sativus Days to Harvest: 65 Beautiful cream-colored fruit are about the size and shape of a large goose egg! Mild, bitter-free and sweet-tasting, this little cucumber set massive yields in our gardens. So fun to grow, and very unique-looking; great for children and all who like delicious cucmbers. This heirloom originated in Croatia. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Contents: approx. 40 seeds Greens: Cress Garden Cress Organic Lepidium sativum Days to Harvest: 14 Fast growing peppery salad green, sprouts in 24 hours. Whole baby plants for micro greens, or for repeated cuttings of thickly sown rows. Great flavour as floating soup garnish. Also known as Garden Pepper Cress, Pepper Grass, Pepperwort, and Poor Man's Pepper. Not to be confused with Watercress or Upland Cress. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Contents: approx. 450 seeds Greens: Mustard Osaka Purple Organic Brassica juncea Days to Harvest: Baby 21, Full size 40 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Refined red. Mild for light cooking and salads, baby or full size. Matures 12-14" tall, and has medium-green leaves with purple-red veins and tinge. 1" wide succulent stems. Earlier and more compact growth, then Red Giant. Contents: approx. 300 seeds Greens: Mizuna Purple Mizuna Organic Brassica rapa (japonica group) Days to Harvest: Baby 21, Full size 40 Essential salad mix ingredient. Unique mustard green of Japanese origin, producing rosettes of dozens of pencil thin, white stalks and deeply cut, fringed leaves. Mild flavour. Continues to produce several weeks from one planting, re-growing after cutting. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Contents: approx. 300 seeds Greens: Leaf Radish Hong Vit Organic Raphanus sativus Days to Harvest: Baby 21, Full size 35 Pink stemmed leaf radish. Greens: Amaranth Polish Organic Amaranthus spp. Days to Harvest: Baby 21, Full size 40 Tall heat loving annuals with ornamental heads. Seeds and leaves are high in protein. Young plants are cut for summer salads while seeds are used in bread. Polish Amaranth is favoured by salad growers. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms Greens: Omega Blue Farm's Salad Mix Organic Days to Harvest: 21 Our special blend of red and green lettuces, kale, spinach, chard, beet greens, mustard, dill, and cress. (OBF grown seed not yet available) Lettuce: Red Leaf Merlot Organic Lactuca sativa Days to Harvest: 55 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Wow! A new level of pigmentation for your lettuce experience! High in antioxidant anthocyanins. Hugely purple and slightly fuzzy to wavy edges. A crisp and open headed leaf type with complete resistance to downy mildew races 1-16. An ideal salad lettuce at any stage. Very bolt resistant. Lettuce: Green Leaf Greenstar Organic Lactuca sativa Days to Harvest: 55 Brightest green colour offers an especially fresh and healthy look. A crisp and open headed leaf type with complete resistance to downy mildew races 1-18. Superior tolerance to hot weather, bolting, and tipburn. An ideal salad lettuce at any stage. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms.

Lettuce: Green Oakleaf Royal Oak Organic Lactuca sativa Days to Harvest: 60 Highly rated for baby leaf. Good flavour. Compared to Oakleaf, Royal Oak has a broader and taller plant, bigger leaves, darker green colour, lower density, and is even slower bolting. (OBF grown seed not yet available) Lettuce: Red Oakleaf Mascara Organic Lactuca sativa Days to Harvest: 60 An heirloom standard that all new red oaks must go up against, and it's hard to beat! High productivity and amazing resistance to stress and disease, it retains it's colour well into summer. Dark red oakleaf with extra frills, good flavour, heat tolerance, and slow to bolt. A lot of salad in these heads! Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Lettuce: Oakleaf Flashy Butter Oak Organic Lactuca sativa Days to Harvest: 60 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. I love eating this lettuce while in the garden on a warm summer day. Another wonderful variation of Frank Morton's speckled leaf theme, this one combines flashy red splashes with emerald green oak leaves in a compact head. Texture is crisp and buttery. Lettuce: Green Butterhead Optima Organic Lactuca sativa Days to Harvest: 60 The best looking darkest green butterhead we have grown. Its velvety texture and creamy flavor are sure to be a hit in every salad. We also love it's big frame with thick leaves. Optima is reported to be very resistant to downy mildew, bottom rot, and tip burn. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Contents: approx. 1000 seeds Lettuce: Blushed Butterhead Continuity Organic Lactuca sativa Days to Harvest: 60 (AKA Marvel of Four Seasons) Pre-1885 French heirloom. A real beauty, it features bronze-red outer leaves that encase a tightly packed, light green head measuring 12-16 inches across. The thin-leaved head has a divine flavour. Best planted in early spring, has a tendency to bolt if planted in hot weather. Good for a winter garden. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Lettuce: Butterhead Flashy Butter Gem Organic Lactuca sativa Days to Harvest: 60 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Many consider this is our prettiest lettuce. latest of Frank Morton's "flashy" red splashed series. It is a Little Gem-like butter-cos that forms a fat short leafed football of a lettuce, splattered throughout by crimson. Perfect leaves for high yield salad crop, or for dense baby heads. Great taste, texture, and colour. Lettuce: Red Romaine Red Romaine Organic Lactuca sativa Days to Harvest: 50 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. We don't know this romaine's real name, it came to us via a Seedy Saturday seedpack a few years back. Year after year it stands out with its impressively robust growth and looks. Green veins with maroon edges remind us of Cimmaron, an 18 th century heirloom. Whatever it's pedigree, it has consistently been the sweetest tasting red romaine with soft leaves that melt in your mouth. Slow to bolt. Lettuce: Green Romaine Green Crisp Organic Lactuca sativa Days to Harvest: 60 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Also known as Crisp Mint. Another favourite for sweetness and yield in cold weather and short autumn days. Makes heavy heads with real romaine backbone, flavour, and juice. Mint green wrapper leaves surround crystal white hearts of savoy-puckered leaves. Looks like the top of a 10-gallon hat.

Melon: Honey Dew Orange Flesh Organic Cucumis melo Days to Harvest: 98 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Light green, smooth skin; orange flesh. An orange-fleshed version of the regular Honeydew; tasty. After a successful season with a hybrid flesh honeydew, we are trialing this open pollinated version. Contents: approx. 20 seeds Melon: HoneyDew Honey O F3 Organic Cucumis melo Days to Harvest: 95 After a most impressive season with a hybrid orange flesh honeydew, we are breeding towards an open pollinated version. The F2 generation had superior honeydew flavour and texture over our open-pollinated Orange Flesh line, but produced a handful of green fleshed honeydew as well. All were excellent eating. We are selecting towards a light green, smooth skin; orange-fleshed version of the regular Honeydew. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Contents: approx. 30 seeds Melon: Watermelon Sugar Baby Organic Citrullus lanatus Days to Harvest: 68 This heirloom is the long time standard of icebox (small) watermelons. It has been very reliable on our farm, producing even during poor years. Solid green melons are almost black when ripe. Round fruits, 6-8 in diameter, averaging 8-10 pounds. 2-4 fruits per plant. Good flavour. Thin but tough rinds resist cracking. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Contents: approx. 30 seeds Melon: Watermelon Golden Midget Organic Citrullus lanatus Days to Harvest: 70 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. A beautiful miniature watermelon that weighs around 3-5 pounds. It s easy to tell when they are ripe, as the rind turns a lovely golden yellow when ready for harvest, a very beautiful contrast with the salmon-pink-colored flesh. The taste is sweet and refreshing. Very early, matures in just 70 days. Developed by the late Dr. Elwyn Meader, UNH, in 1959. Unique. Onion: Red Bulb OBF Red Bulb Organic Allium cepa Days to Harvest: 115 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. A delicious blend of Dutch and Italian heirlooms. We selected for good pungent but sweet flavour, rich red colour, excellent storage, and overall performance. Expect variation, this is just the beginning of creating our own locally adapted variety. Contents: approx. 225 seeds Onion: Red Bulb Dutch Red Organic Allium cepa Days to Harvest: 115 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Also known as NOORDHOLLANDSE BLOEDRODE which translates as North Holland Blood Red. These saucer-shaped beauties are indeed a lovely, shiny ox-blood red. Large, flattened onions are very pungent, which makes them good keepers in spite of their rather thick neck. They can also be grown for scallions, as they often are in Holland. They grow very well here. Contents: approx. 225 seeds Onion: Bunching/Scallions Deep Purple Organic Allium fistulosum Days to Harvest: 60 Deep red-purple. The first red buncher that is highly coloured at any temperature or age. For spring or summer sowing. They prefer a neutral to slightly alkaline soil but are also extremely hardy and pest resistant; grow them in full sun. The flowers are attractive to bees and other useful insects. Contents: approx. 150 seeds (OBF grown seeds not yet available) Onions: Leeks Bulgarian Giant Organic Allium ampeloprasum Days to Harvest: 90 A long thin leek of the best quality; light green leaves. Fine autumn variety that is popular in Europe. Best started indoors in Feb Mar. Transplant out when 8 tall. Otherwise, direct seed April-June. Contents: approx. 80 seeds Peas: Snow Variety: Oregon Giant Pisum sativum Days to Harvest: 60 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Unusually large, thick, and very sweet. Extra large, medium green, flat pods average 4 ½" x 1". Harvest early as a snow pea, or enjoy them when larger and still tender. Good for fresh market, canning, & freezing. Tolerant to Powdery Mildew and Common Wilt. Contents: approx. 75 seeds Peppers: Sweet Specialty Variety: Lipstick Capsicum annuum Days to Harvest: yellow 60, red 80 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Our favourite pepper! Many consider Lipstick the most delicious sweet pepper and we concur! Heavy, attractive, dark green fruits average 4" long and taper to a blunt point. They ripen to a glossy, rich red. Thick, juicy, and sweet for salads and cooking, and perfect for roasting and salsa. Dependable, early, heavy yields, even in a cool summer season. Contents: approx. 30 seeds Peppers: Sweet Specialty Variety: Karma Red Roaster Capsicum annuum Days to Harvest: yellow 60, red 80 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. This is a blend of two Frank Morten varieties that we found to be very similar. They are much more tapered than lipstick but similar in size productivity. Some have suggested that they make a better roasting pepper. Contents: approx. 30 seeds Spinach: Smoothleaf Variety: Giant Noble Organic Spinacia oleracea Days to Harvest: 50 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. This is the giant of the spinach clan, plants spread to 25! Tender leaves are great for canning, steaming or salads. For those who want quantity and quality. Introduced in 1926. Contents: approx. 400 seeds (OBF grown seed not yet available) Squashes: Pumpkin, Pie Variety: Cinderella Cucurbita maxima Days to Harvest: 105 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Also known as ROUGE VIF D ETAMPES. Most beautiful, flattened, and ribbed large fruit are a gorgeous deep red-orange. A very old French Heirloom, this was the most common pumpkin in the Central Market in Paris back in the 1880 s. The flesh is tasty in pies or baked. Like summer squash, this one can also be picked small and fried. As a bonus, it s a good yielder, too. Typical weight is 6-9 pounds. Avg. yield is 4 fruits per plant. Contents: approx. 20 seeds Squashes: Winter Greek Sweet Red Butternut Cucurbita moschata Days to Harvest: 120 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. This is one delicious squash! The long necked, reddish-tan fruit are filled with sweet, deep orange flesh that s richly flavored. We find it makes an excellent substitute for holiday yams. Attractive, large vines are highly productive. It is very resistant to squash beetles! This variety is super rare. Takes longer than Waltham to ripen, and needs to be harvested while still green in some years. Excellent storage Contents: approx. 20 seeds Squashes: Winter, Delicata Variety: Delicata Zeppelin Organic Cucurbita pepo Days to Harvest: 100 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. This is good Delicata. Rock'n'Roll Delicata, in fact. Direct from Oregon's Frank Morton's specially bred bitter free line. The fruits are longer and more uniform, finer textured, sweeter, and significantly longer keeping than other Delicata strains. 3 cream coloured fruits with dark green longitudinal stripes and flecks. Very sweet, excellent for stuffing and baking, even right after harvest, requiring no curing. Contents: approx. 20 seeds

Tomato: Yellow Cherry, Bush Gold Nugget Organic Solanium lycopersicum Days to Harvest: 56 An early, prolific, golden cherry tomato. 1 to 1 1/4" diameter, round to slightly oval fruits have a deep yellow colour. The flavour is well balanced and delicious, and a majority of the early fruits are seedless. Healthy, compact plants with a concentrated early set. Developed by Dr. James Baggett, Oregon State University. (OBF grown seeds not yet available) Tomato: Specialty Cherry, Vine Black Cherry Organic Solanium lycopersicum Days to Harvest: 64 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Best cherry tomato I've ever grown! Sweet and robust, round fruits are almost black in colour. High yielding. Bred in Florida by the late Vince Sapp. Tomato: Red Cherry, Vine Riesentraube Organic Solanium lycopersicum Days to Harvest: Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. This old German heirloom was offered in Philadelphia by the mid-1800 s. The sweet, red 1-oz fruit grow in large clusters; the name means Giant Bunch of Grapes in German. This is likely the most popular small tomato with seed collectors, as many favour the rich, full tomato flavour that is missing in today s cherry types. Large plants produce massive yields. Tomato: Yellow, Bush Taxi Organic Solanium lycopersicum Days to Harvest: 64 Yellow tomatoes early, prolific. Meaty, 4-6oz, baseball sized, lemon yellow tomatoes. Smooth, blemish-free globes with a small stem scar. Attractive, sweet flavoured, and easy to grow. Concentrated early set. Compact, dark green vine. Widely adapted. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Tomato: Orange slicer, Vine Valencia Organic Solanium lycopersicum Days to Harvest: 76 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. My favorite tomato in 2010; best for looks and fresh eating. Sunny orange fruits with full tomato flavour. Round and smooth these fruits average 8-10oz and their meaty interiors have few seeds. This mid season tomato is among the best for flavour and texture. A special Johnny Select Seeds selection of a Maine family heirloom. Tomato: Paste, Vine Ardwyna Organic Solanium lycopersicum Days to Harvest: 76 Huge red thin skin meaty paste tomato excellent for cooking or drying because they are low in juice and high in pulp. They are early maturing, very productive and blight resistant. These 4-5 chubby yet tapered tomatoes, with few seeds, weighing up to a pound each, are smooth cylindrical and taper gradually to a point. Will need good support. Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Tomato: Paste, Vine Memorial Polish Paste Organic Solanium lycopersicum Days to Harvest: 76 Locally produced from carefully selected plants at Omega Blue Farms. Original seeds came from Carolyn Herriot of Victoria. This is the tomato that originally got me interested in heritage tomatoes. Large to very large, plum paste tomatoes which offer excellent flavor mixed with plenty of meatiness. I absolutely love it in sandwiches. Plants are heavy producers.
