Rules proposals-voting 2016 B.1.1 New species Carica papaya L. C.3.1 Improved guidance in 3.2.2 Other seeds C.3.2 Amendment to PSD 10 C.3.3 Move Hedysarum from PSD 11 to PSD23 C.4.1 - Reporting results in 4.7 7
Rules proposals-voting 2016 B.1.1 - New species Carica papaya L. Table 2, Part 2: tree and shrub seeds Minimum purity working sample weight = 50g PSD = 10 & classified as Chaffy (see ISTA 3.6.6) Sample preparation Because of the soft seed coat it is recommended that the seed should not be passed through a mechanical divider such as a Centrifugal divider because of the possibility of damaged being caused to the seed and that a riffle (soil divider) be used instead. U.S. National Seed Herbarium image 8
Rules proposals-voting 2016 C.3.1 Improved guidance in 3.2.2 Other seeds 4. For schizocarps with two or more seeds, the individual seeds (mericarps) contained in a schizocarp are to be counted separately. 9
Schizocarps, PSD 15 & Other Seed Classification 1. Where a species is not covered by an ISTA PSD e.g. Aethusa, Ammi, Chaerophyllum 5 schizocarps = would be reported as 10 seeds 2. Where a species is covered by an ISTA PSD e.g. PSD15: Anthriscus, Cuminum, Daucus, 5 schizocarps = would be reported as 5 seeds Schizocarp NIAB NIAB NIAB Aethusa cynapium Anthriscus caucalis Daucus carota 10
Rules proposals-voting 2016 C.3.2 Amendment to PSD 10 ISTA PSD 10 = Seed, with or without testa Piece of seed larger than one half, with or without testa New wording: Allium: Pairs of Allium seeds adhering together do not need to be separated 11
Rules proposals-voting 2016 C.3.2 Amendment to PSD 10 The fruit of Allium is a dry dehiscent capsule containing three chambers, usually with two ovules per chamber. At maturity the pairs of seeds in each chamber may adhere together. While most Allium seed pairs separate naturally during seed conditioning, some do not. Attempting to separate the adhering seeds could cause mechanical damage and may affect the purity and germination results. In the AOSA rules, the Pure Seed Unit (PSU is described as: Pairs of Allium spp. adhering together need not be separated 12
Rules proposals-voting 2016 C.3.3 Move Hedysarum from PSD 11 to PSD23 A change of PSD from PSD11 to PSD 23 is proposed as new varieties of Hedysarum currently being developed are of a soft seeded variety that does not require the seed to be removed from the pod (for scarification). Upon harvest or cleaning the pods break into single pod units. The current PSD 11 does not allow for pod material, under the current PSD 11 all seed should be taken out of the pericarp. 13
Rules proposals-voting 2016 C.3.3 Move Hedysarum from PSD 11 to PSD23 There is currently an anomaly with the submitted sample weights in chapter 2 in that there are different submitted sample weights for fruits (300g) and samples submitted as fruit under the current PSD11 would be required to be removed from the pods (fruit) By moving Hedysarum to PSD 23 this contradiction would be removed The classification was also changed to Chaffy to cover the fruits 14
Rules proposals-voting 2016 C.3.3 Move Hedysarum from PSD 11 to PSD23 One-seeded segment of pod or siliqua, with or without stalk or terminal beak, unless it is obvious that no seed is present. Seed, provided a portion of the testa is attached. Piece of seed larger than one-half the original size, provided a portion of the testa is attached. 15
Rules proposals-voting 2016 C. 4.1 Reporting results in 4.7 If approved a consequential change in Chapter 1, 1.5.2.4 also needed. Current version 4.7 Reporting results - The scientific name and number of seeds of each species sought and found in this weight. Proposed version 4.7 Reporting results - The scientific name and number of seeds of each species sought and found in this weight. If no other seeds are found, this must be indicated on the certificate. The laboratory can decide on the wording to be used. 16
Rules proposals-voting 2016 C. 4.1 Reporting results in 4.7 Examples for reporting: Other plant species in XXXg (Complete test) NIL Designated Other plant species in XXXg (Limited test) Avena spp. = NIL Cuscuta spp. = NIL Rumex spp. = NIL 17
Rules proposals-voting 2016 C.3.2 Amendment to PSD 10 ISTA PSD 10 = Seed, with or without testa Piece of seed larger than one half, with or without testa New wording: Allium: Pairs of Allium seeds adhering together do not need to be separated 18
A Rules proposal for 2017 Chenopodium quinoa L. Chenopodium The purity committee have already completed and agreed the purity part to add this species to the rules. Recommended submitted working sample weights are: 100g Submitted sample 10g Purity Chenopodiaceae PSD 2 Not chaffy 100g Other Seed Determination Statistical analysis of the germination data to be finalised. 19
Universal List Digital Images http://seedtest.org/upload/cms/user/uni versallistofspecies2014.pdf 50 % are uploaded Another 32 species (group 2) are checked and ready to send to ISTA 20
