WALNUT-FRUIT FORESTS IN KYRGYZSTAN Being home to around 5.5 million inhabitants, Kyrgyzstan is a small and mountainous country in the midst of Central Asia. Whilst largely unknown, the country has a lot to offer to both tourists and consumers across the globe. Being covered over 90% by mountains and having three peaks more than 7,000 m above sea level, Kyrgyzstanhas an ancient history of nomad culture and animal husbandry. This combination of pristine nature and culture make it a unique and exciting destination for adventure travelers. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan hosts the largest natural walnut-fruit forests in the world. On an area of approximately 30,000 to 40,000 ha in the Tien Shan and Chatkal mountain range, walnuts and various kinds of fruits, berries and herbs grow in this unique environment, offering a range of food and medicinal products. 4 COMMODITY AND SERVICE COOPERATIVE WEALTH OF KYRGYZ FOREST
The walnuts have been receiving increasing attention by international markets in recent years, but the various other forest products are so far largely untouched and offer tremendous opportunities for international mass and niche markets. Having grown over many centuries with virtually no human involvement, the forest products have developed unique quality properties in a clean environment therefore being perfectly predisposed for human consumption in many ways. Besides playing an important economic role for its inhabitants, the forest area is crucially regulating the water and soil household in the region and provides a rich reserve of biodiversity. As the only democracy of the region and a long time member in the World Trade Organization, Kyrgyzstan offers favorable conditions for local and international businesses to build up trade linkages and food or medicinal value chains. 25 years after the fall of the Soviet Union, a new generation is now steering the country towards a globally integrated market economy. 5
About the Cooperative Our cooperative Wealth of Kyrgyz Forest with currently around 200 members was founded in 2013 by forest users of five forestries in the walnut-fruit forests of Jalal-Abad. Having achieved Fairtrade certification in 2014, we have since successfully been taking part in a supply chain of Fairtrade certified walnuts to the EU. The mission of Wealth of Kyrgyz Forest is to give consumers the opportunity to purchase healthy, clean and unique forest products from the natural walnut and fruit forests of Kyrgyzstan. 6 COMMODITY AND SERVICE COOPERATIVE WEALTH OF KYRGYZ FOREST
Taking into account modern food safety standards, we aim to increase the living standard of forest users in Jalal-Abad through the sustainable use of natural resources, thereby conserving the forest environment for future generations. While the value chains of walnuts and other forest products in Jalal-Abad had previously been earmarked by the involvement of various middlemen, the goal of our cooperative is to build a direct link between collectors and processors or exporters to achieve efficiencies and create additional value.moreover, our members have solar drying equipment, which allows them to process various forest products into quality dry products under clean and safe conditions. With support from consulting organization AgroLead in the framework of projects financed by GIZ and ICCO, we introduced the Fairtrade standard to our members in 2014, which included trainings on improved workings conditions and a transparent supply chain. In 2016, Wealth of Kyrgyz Forests is undergoing EU organic certification for wild collection, which will open further market opportunities to our cooperative members. 7
