ACWGC UNION ARMY CAMPAIGN AND BATTLEFIELD RIBBONS AWARDS STUDY BG & HPS BULL RUN AND ANTIETAM SERIES MASTER STUDY GUIDE Including the battles of Big Bethel, Blackburn s Ford, 1st Bull Run (First Manassas), Ely s Farm, Cedar Mountain, Union, Grovetown (Brawner s Farm), Gaps to Manassas, Thoroughfare Gap, 2nd Bull Run (Second Manassas), Chantilly, Turner s Gap, South Mountain, Hagerstown and Antietam (Sharpsburg) PREPARED AND RESEARCHED BY Maj. Gen. Jos. C. Meyer OFFICIAL 2008-2009 UA AWARDS COMMITTEE DOCUMENT (Approved July 22 nd, 2009) 1

Preface The following study guide has been carefully constructed to give fundamental support to the ACWGC Union Army Awards system. Army and Corps Commanders will find this study especially useful as a base guide for determining the proper battlefield ribbon for the particular scenario played. The study guide is constructed in a rolling table format in which all of the actions and battles of the main game package(s) are primarily listed in order of their historical or ahistorical date/time chronology. Larger, multiple-day scenarios generally follow in sequence all of the smaller, single-day scenarios of which they are composed. Note should be taken that this order is not always the order in which the scenarios are presented upon the original game disks. The game and scenario designers did not always undertake a common, progressive identification method in their presentations that could be considered universal in its application. Therefore there are great differences from game package to game package in how the scenarios are listed, as well as great differences within the same game package! The battle date order is further sub-ordered based upon the general date of publication. Thus the TalonSoft BattleGround scenarios and ifications will always precede the HPS Simulations scenarios and ifications for that particular battle date. The tables are headed by the description of the battle or action with which the scenario group is associated. If there are any scenarios within that description that qualify by turn count for a possible MAJOR VICTORY, then the selected file name and graphic of the updated award ribbon are also displayed within the header, to the right of the older, displaced ribbon. Each scenario entry within a table includes the ACWGC abbreviation of the parent game, the scenario ID number or type if given, the number of constructed game turns, the historical date of the scenario, and the exact description as given within the game. In addition, the number of scenario turns is prefixed with an alpha character(s), which identifies the nature of the scenario. The exact program scn (scenario) file identification is also included with the description. Note flashes are appropriately inserted into the study guide where necessary to indicate additional information given at the end. Officers are encouraged to scan the abbreviation Legend Key in the rear before using this guide. Special notes are sometimes inserted into the tables for immediate read. THE 2008-2009 UNION ARMY AWARDS COMMITTEE AND ADVISORY GROUP General s Jeff Laub, Ernie Sands, John Corbin, Mark Oakford, Antony Barlow, Ken Miller, Derald Riggs, David Danner, Jeff Bangma, and Major General Joseph Meyer 2

HPSCN HPS Campaign Antietam HPSCC HPS Campaign Corinth Modified scenario AI Artificial Intelligence Scenario C Campaign Scenario CAM Campaign Scenario CL Company Level EF Equal Force Scenario H Historical Scenario M Meeting Scenario Mod Modified Scenario NF Norris-Frost Scenario W What-If Scenario w Weather Scenario (Weather Rules) 2 It was suggested that within the incorporation of the new HPS Campaign Antietam medal and ribbons awards that an entirely new, quad-color base pattern be utilized rather than trying to follow the original blue-green-white and green-yellow base patterns established in the existing BG Bull Run and Antietam ribbons. The tan-orange-red-white base color combination is actually lifted from the front-end graphics color combination of the new game and provide a comfortable overlay for the entire set of new Antietam awards. While the five existing ribbons (1 st & 2 nd Bull Run and South Mountain, Thoroughfare Gap & Antietam) would be replaced entirely, elements of their former color and patterns would be preserved in their new designs. Additionally, the two, original color patterns would then become free for future use in the upcoming game packages. 3 There are two possible FMV ribbons in this set; one for the Antietam games, and one for the Bull Run games. This was done to acknowledge the original TalonSoft BattleGround design separation between the two major actions. The decision by HPS Simulations to include the Second Bull Run battles in with the Antietam battles was understandably driven by the principle need to create an extended campaign path that represented the early portion of the Eastern Theater action which occurred immediately after McClellan s Peninsula Campaign. Thus the HPS campaign paths all begin with the first movement and action by Lee, Cedar Mountain, to take the war northward after McClellan was stalemated. The inclusion of the First Bull Run scenarios by HPS was considered an added bonus to the game package, but one that effectively created a group of stand-alone actions outside of the HPS campaign pathway. It also blurred the distinction originally created by TalonSoft in mating the First and Second Bull Run actions together. The ACWGC Union Army chose to keep the distinction for two, separate FMV s, one for Bull Run and one for Antietam, in the HPS format. The HPS Antietam FMV is based only upon those scenarios that represent, from the Union viewpoint, the actions that occurred after McClellan was again given command of the forces that retreated towards Washington after the Second Bull Run battle. It is up to the individual player to keep track of his own Major Victories that would qualify for either FMV award. 4 The scenarios for the Battle of Big Bethel, the first military action of the Eastern Theater, may be considered as an orphan scenarios attached to the larger Bull Run / Antietam package. 5 The Equal Force scenarios are conveniently grouped at this point in lieu of their scattered and dissimilar dates. 6 This scenario should not be confused with the Ely s Ford scenario of the HPS Campaign Chancellorsville package. 7 This particular, ified Norris-Frost scenario, at 210 turns, represents a five-day recreation of the entire Second Bull Run campaign and, as such, has its own battlefield ribbon! 8 The Turner s Gap scenarios have been accorded a ribbon separate from the South Mountain scenarios by virtue of their hypothetical structure and earlier date! 24
