The reality of doing more with less, because of woefully inadequate reimbursement from State and Federal medical reimbursement programs has brought about some necessary but very distressing decisions. February began with the transition of our beautician from a long time Fairview employee to an independent contractor. In April we had to close the Child Development Center because of our inability to continue sustaining the large financial losses that the center incurred. In May we transitioned our in-house rehabilitation staff to Alliance Rehab. This change, while most challenging for our rehab employees, will make our rehabilitation services more cost effective and enable us to enhance our ability to compete in the area of short-term sub-acute care. These changes have enabled us to create a budget for the next fiscal year that will remove the employee wage freeze, prevent layoffs and continue to give our residents the quality services they deserve. We continue to take pride in the fact that Fairview is the only Five-Star facility in the greater New London area and are most thankful to our staff for maintaining that distinction. In just a few short weeks a lucky winner will be drawn for the car raffle. Only 750 tickets were printed. The odds of winning are pretty good!! This year s vehicle is the wildly popular Honda Fit. This car is loaded with extras. This year all proceeds will help pay for the ongoing implementation of our electronic medical records system. Anyone who purchases a ticket will be provided a parking pass to drive onto Fairview s property (upon request) to watch the tremendous Mashantucket fireworks display. Ververis, Jr. with Fairview Administrator James Malloy (C) FAIRVIEW AWARDS MEDAL TO DESERVING RECIPIENTS The third annual Fairview Medal Dinner was held on Saturday, April 24. Ninety guests enjoyed a delicious dinner catered by Gourmet Galley located in Gales Ferry, CT. The dinner is an opportunity to honor individuals who have risen above their peers by providing invaluable assistance to Fairview, whether through personal effort, selfless gifts of time, financial aid, or service to residents. It is also a way for Fairview to thank those in attendance for their support throughout the year. This year s winners were Dr. Edward McDermott, Medical Director at Fairview, and George P. Ververis, Jr., a longtime supporter and a member of Fairview s Development Committee. Dr. McDermott began his long relationship with Fairview in 1982 as the Assistant Medical Director, and he was appointed Medical Director in 2005. He earned his undergraduate degree at Iona College in 1974 and his medical degree from New York Hospital Medical School in 1978. He completed his residency at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY in 1981. Dr. McDermott is a board-certified Internist and a senior attending physician at L&M Hospital in New London, CT. He served as the Health Director for the City of Groton from 1983 to 1987. He was recognized as the New London County Outstanding Physician of the Year in 1985. Mr. Ververis first became involved with Fairview as a caregiver for his mother. George s mother died in 2004, but his commitment to Fairview has only grown since her passing. He has served on the Fairview Development Committee for the last five years having input into special events such as the annual car raffle, the antiques auction, and other fundraising activities. George is an architect in New York City and an Associate Principal/Senior Architect with Highland Associates. He was raised in Ledyard, CT. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Architecture from The Cooper Union in NYC, and Masters Degrees in Architecture and Urban Planning from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Along with the presentation of the Fairview Medal, both recipients received a citation from Second District Congressman, Joseph Courtney, citing their service to Fairview. Niantic Lodge #17 I.O.O.F. members Mary Sepowitz and Tim Stanley present a $1,000 check on behalf of the lodge for the Resident Fund Previous recipients of the Fairview Medal are: Billy Joe Foreman, Edie Kalin, Vincent Barbieri, and Leah Genido. A special thanks goes to Michael Mondello, a member of Stonington Lodge #26 I.O.O.F., for providing several bottles of wine for the social hour and the dinner. Board of Trustee member Marshall Kalin presents James Malloy with a $1,000 check on behalf of he and his wife Edie for the Kalin Scholarship Fund

For the past several years sailors have visited Fairview on Mother s Day to pin corsages on all of Fairview s mothers and to stay and have tea and dessert. This is a wonderful experience for both Fairview s residents and the sailors. Fairview is grateful to the Submarine Base for continuing this tradition. HONORING A FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE A longtime member of Fairview s nursing staff passed away last fall after a long battle with cancer. Marian Heffernan trained as a nurse at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, and then spent more than two decades nursing in the New London region before joining the staff at Fairview as a nursing supervisor. A tree encircled by flowers was planted at Fairview i n h e r honor. The spot chosen was significant because it t o u c h e d both parts of her life at Fairview; it is near the employee entrance and is within view of the room where she spent her final days. Director of Nursing, Deb Morgan, said: It was really special that she came out here for the end of her life. We do this day in and day out care for people at the end of their lives but this really was different for us." A bronze plaque attached to a granite stone commemorates Marian s legacy at Fairview. HEALING TOUCH Through the volunteer efforts of Cecelia Sullivan, MS Ed., Healing Touch Practitioner Apprentice, residents are now experiencing the benefits of a therapy called Healing Touch. Cecelia visits Fairview once a week and works with residents to create a sense of well-being. This involves an evidencebased medical model of energy therapy. Some of the benefits can include: a feeling or sense of well-being, enhanced recovery from surgery, reduced anxiety, pain and stress from trauma, relief from depression and stress, strengthened immune system, and support for the dying process. Healing Touch complements and supports medical treatments. Cecelia is pictured during a therapy session with resident Yolanda D Elia.
Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 6 EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY The employees at Fairview were treated to a delicious pasta bar on May 5 in conjunction with Employee Appreciation Week. Fairview has a wonderful hard-working staff of approximately 140 full-time and 30 part-time. Many of these employees have been at Fairview for several years. One of the major reasons why we continue to receive a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is the quality and dedication of our staff. Only ten percent of all nursing homes are eligible for this rating. COURTYARD AUTOMATIC DOOR UPDATE An official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new automatic door opener in Fairview s courtyard took place on May 7. The opener was installed in March through the generosity of grants provided by NewportFed Bank and Chelsea Groton Bank. After brief remarks by Resident Council President Francis Vera the door was officially opened. Pictured cutting the ribbon is Mrs. Vera assisted by Tomi Stanley, Recreation Director. After the official ceremonies several of the residents took advantage of the beautiful day and e n j o ye d i c e cream treats in the courtyard. FELLOWSHIP MANOR RESIDENT REVITALIZES GREENHOUSE Bob Rubega has resided in Fellowship Manor, Fairview s independent living apartment complex, for almost one year. His wife was a resident at Fairview for several months before her passing in late 2009. Recently, Bob has taken it upon himself to cultivate new plants in the Fairview greenhouse which will be used to brighten the days of our residents. We are very grateful to him for being such a wonderful volunteer. Bob worked for a time at General Dynamics/Electric Boat before retiring from the Naval U n d e r w a t e r Sound Lab in New London, CT. He spent his entire career working with underwater acoustics. FAIRVIEW HOSTS MYSTIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS AFTER HOURS Over ninety guests enjoyed delicious food provided by Ocean Blue Catering, and spirits provided by New London Harbour Towers Condominiums, at the Mystic Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours held on May 11. Fairview has hosted several events for the Mystic Chamber including the Business After Hours, Business Before Hours, and the Groton Business Association meetings. During the course of the evening a special drawing was held for a Fairview car raffle ticket which was won by Sabrina Loeb from Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut. The car raffle will be held on July 10 (see enclosed flyer). Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 7 BISTRO RECEIVES UPGRADES When the Bistro opened in January, 2006 no one could have anticipated just how successful it would become. Open seven days a w e e k f r o m 11:00am to 7:00pm the bistro serves lunch and dinner for residents, their families, friends, and staff. Special dinners are also prepared and served on most holidays as well. Because of this heavier than anticipated use, some of the original equipment and facilities needed to be updated sooner than expected. Fortunately, one of Fairview s most generous benefactors agreed to help with this project. George P. Ververis, Jr. donated $5,000.00 to install stainless steel countertops, a new higher grade stove and exhaust fan, a reconfigured sink, stainless steel shelving, and backsplash. George has made other significant donations to Fairview over the past several years as well. George s mother had been a resident at Fairview before she passed away several years ago. STONINGTON LODGE MEMBER DONATES LAPTOP COMPUTER Mike Mondello has not been a member of the Stonington Lodge #26 I.O.O.F. for too long. However, he has certainly made a big impact on the fortunes of Fairview and its residents since joining the lodge. When Mike became aware that Fairview was in need of a laptop computer for residents to use to access the internet he immediately purchased one. It is now available in Fairview s library. Mike has also donated his time by participating in monthly visits to one of the Lodge s members who can no longer attend meetings. Mike is always ready and eager to help with other community service projects that the Lodge undertakes. Pictured is (L) Mike with the new computer and David Brown, Director of Development. FAMILY DINNER A BIG SUCCESS The quarterly family dinner was held on April 27 in the Fairview auditorium. Each resident and their families have the opportunity throughout the year to attend one of the dinners. The Fairview dietary department provides a delicious dinner each time and several Fairview staff members volunteer to help transport residents and serve the meal. This event is coordinated by the Recreation Department. Pictured is resident Matt Phipps with his daughter and sonin-law, Ellen and David Rosenfeldt. The Rosenfeldt s have been very generous to Fairview. They and their coworkers have provided gifts to residents at holidays and on other special occasions throughout the year. NIANTIC LODGE #17 MAKES DONATION Niantic Lodge #17 recently donated $1,500.00 to purchase a patio set for Fairview residents' outdoor pleasure and enjoyment. STONINGTON LODGE #26 MAKES DONATION Stonington Lodge #26 has been making substantial annual donations to Fairview for the past several years. This year the lodge initially donated $1,500.00 which will be used to help pay for the ongoing expense of implementing the electronic medical records system. In addition to this gift the lodge also donated $650.00 to buy new event tables for the auditorium and bistro.
