October 2018 To our valued customers, Thank you again for your continued business and consideration of the products manufactured by Arway Confections and Long Grove Confectionery. We are happy to offer an updated price list for your review. Please note that all bulk prices have remained unchanged; and really the only update is the front cover, the date, and of course this note. As a reminder, all products manufactured at either Arway or Long Grove are available through both companies and under a single customer number. Like all years, this one has also flown by! We have been extremely busy at both facilities all year long. We are currently in the busiest part of the year. The month of October has always been our company s busiest month of the year, but in truth, we find ourselves running as fast as we can from August all the way through December. We do our best to keep up with the demand. We have an all-star team of employees that are working crazy hours, trying to keep everyone happy. We will always do our best to accommodate all the needs our customers have, but additional lead time does help. The crystal ball has been out for repair, and management tells me it may be a while before it gets fixed! Seriously, though, Arway has had to change the way that we manufacture in this new world of food safety. As most of you know, FSMA compliance (the Food Safety and Modernization Act) is the law of the land, making what we do much more complicated than it used to be. A multitude of paperwork, allergen, and product control is now mandated by FDA and FSMA. This year, we completed our SQF audit (Safe Quality Foods) to validate our programs, procedures, and facilities. Multiply this by two plants and hundreds of products, and I am very grateful to have a bunch of really smart, hard-working people on my team trying to sort this all out. I have received a few notes questioning the outcome of the 2018 Kettle Award, the award given to an individual that has made major contributions to the candy industry with tenure of over 25 years of service. As you may recall, I was nominated along with Jean Thompson (President of Seattle Chocolates), Chris Reid (President & CEO of Piedmont Candy), and Mitchell Goetz, the winner! (CEO of Goetz Candy Company). All the nominees have amazing backgrounds, and although I did not win, it was a huge honor to have been nominated. Besides, how can you compete with Bullseyes! Booth#331 Market Information Nutmeat and commodity prices are mostly steady, but more so because of our purchasing strategies. We purchase a number of commodities and are always buying future positions. In the end, we are hopeful to create steady pricing in a commoditized world where there is some volatility. We do our best to dollar cost average our way through the year. Labor costs continue to rise and is in short supply. We find ourselves struggling to cover all the labor we need at both facilities. The cost of that labor is most definitely on the rise, as we find ourselves competing with a low unemployment rate and every other business that is also in need of people. 2 President Trump s Tariffs and the trade war we are entering with China and other countries will most certainly lead to higher prices. We may, however, see some relief in commodity pricing due to demand destruction with some nutmeats including Almonds, Pistachios, and Pecans. China has been a significant buyer of nuts from the U.S., and has had a major influence on global demand as well as commodity prices. If there is no agreement with China, the tariffs should help slow demand from China. We have not seen any immediate demand destruction yet, and for the time being current Fall/Xmas demand is helping to keep prices from falling.
