Preoperative Dietary Instructions for Patients about to undergo Surgery Womens Services Information for Patients i

Introduction You have been given this leaflet because the operation you are having may involve surgery to your bowel. Before you come into hospital you will need to follow the instructions in this leaflet in order to minimise possible complications during your surgery. 5 days before the operation Stop taking any tablets that contain iron 3 days before the operation Start low residue diet and follow for 3 days Take 2 Senna 7.5mg twice a day Day before operation Pre-operative drinks 2 drinks between 6-10pm Take Rantidine 150mg at 10pm Day of operation Pre-operative drinks 2 drinks between 2-6am 2 drinks between 7-11am Take Rantidine 150mg at 6am An enema may be administered when you arrive on the ward It is still essential that you follow the Admission Information Sheet and instructions for not eating/ drinking. 2

Meat Fish Cheese Eggs Milk Fats Soups Bread Cereal Lean meat, bacon, poultry, offal Fresh, frozen, tinned in brine only Any type Boiled, poached, scrambled Up to 1 pint daily (full, semi skimmed and skimmed) Butter, margarine, low fat spread Clear soups White only Cornflakes, Rice Krispies and sugar coated versions Chapatti Made with white flour (number 1) Potatoes Rice Savoury Snacks Biscuits Sweets Desserts Beverages Seasoning Boiled or mashed without skins, baked without skin 4tbl spoons of white rice only Corn snacks, e.g. wotsits, skips, cheese puffs Plain biscuits e.g. rich teas Boiled sweets, mints, jellied sweets Jelly, custard, smooth yoghurt (with milk from allowance) and rice pudding (from your rice allowance) Tea, Coffee (with milk from allowance), squash, meat extract drinks (Oxo, Bovril, Marmite), wine/ beer, fizzy drinks Salt, vinegar, ground pepper 3

Once admitted to the ward if at any time you feel faint, dizzy or think you are having a hypo please advise the staff immediately. 4
