And elsewhere there was the soft whirring of an old sewing machine, pedalled by the dressmaker in his shop. To our surprise, this was all that remained of the village where our grandmother grew up. It was a memorable visit for our grandmother, returning to her village after 60 years of absence, but one of the remarkable memories for me was the food we enjoyed that day, which was cooked for us by an old relative from another era.
