Abstract Species richness of plant species of the homegardens of Kuzhicodu village of Kanyakumari District, Tamilnadu was studied. A total of 485 plant species belonging to347 genera and 105 families which included 253 herbs, 96 shrubs, 87 trees and 49 climbers.of the 485 plant species, 101 families were Angiosperms, 3 families were Gymnosperms (Araucariaceae, Cupressaceae, Cycadaceae) and a Pteridophyte belongs to the family Davalliaceae is also reported.the dominant and co-dominant families were Poaceae (38 species) and Euphorbiaceae (34 species). The study reveals that the homegarden systems provide cash income, medicine, timber, fuelwood, and edibles for household consumption as well as for sale. The homegardens are the sites of conservation of plants both wild and domesticated, because of their uses to the households.these homegardens serve as asylum for many multipurpose plant species and harbor rich biodiversity. INTRODUCTION Homegarden is a bounded piece of land with a mixture of tended and cultivated plants on which a house is built. One of the important features of homegarden is species diversity, their intimate admixture of plants which includes herbs, shrubs, trees and perennials (Nair, 2006). Farming system provides information about the traditional culture and ecological knowledge of the local community (Kumar and Nair, 2004; Tanjang and Arunachalam, 2009). In addition, integrated farming system produces a variety of foods and agricultural products including staple crops, vegetables, fruits, medicinal plants and so on (Polegri and Negri, 2010; Bajpai et al., 2013). These gardens are often utilized as testing plots for new crops, as nurseries for plantlets later destined for planting in open fields and as sites for domestication of needy forms which may also be used directly within the household (Leiva et al., 2001). Homegardens represent microenvironments within larger systems involving deliberated management of multipurpose trees, shrubs, annual and perennial agriculture crops, herbs, spices, medicinal plants and animals on the same land unit in either a spatial arrangement or a temporal sequence (Michon et al., 1986, Okafor and Fernandes, 1987; Padoch and Jong, 1991). These gardens are important sources of income in many countries around theworld and they maintain crop and agroforestry genetic resources, which may not be found in more extensive agroecosystems. The major functions of homegardens; especially in rural areas are subsistence production and income generation (Soemarwoto and Conway, 1992). P. Subitha et al., range of products can be produced with relatively low inputs (Christanty, 1990; Hochegger, 1998; Soemarwoto and Conway, 1992). Homegardens can protect soil from erosion, offer a habitat to wild plants and make efficient use of light, water and other resources (Christanty et al., 1986; Jose and Shanmugaratnam, 1993; Torquebiau, 1992). Diversity in homegardens is influenced by ecological factors of gardens and socioeconomic characteristics of gardeners, as well as altitude of homegardens, size and age of homegardens and level of production intensity and market access (Abdoellah et al., 2001; Christanty et al., 1986; Quiroz et al., 2002; Michon and Mary, 1994). Their structure, composition, species and cultivars diversity of homegardens are influenced by changes in the socioeconomic circumstances and cultural values of the households that maintain these gardens. Interdisciplinary studies with attention to socioeconomic and biophysical aspects are necessary for better understanding of homegarden s benefits and function (Budowski, 1990; Landauer and Brazil, 1990; Lok, 1998; Mendez et al., 2001; Nair, 1993). These homegardens inhibit a large number of non-timber forest products including medicinal and aromatic plants and edible plants (Suba et al., 2014; Sukumaran and Parthiban, 2014; Geetha et al., 2015). The literatures revealed that there is a lack of research on plant diversity and economic value of homegardens in Tamilnadu where tradition of homegarden is very old. In view of this fact, the present study aims at analyzing plant diversity and community structure in the selected homegardens of Kuzhicodu village, Kanyakumari district and investigates the contribution of the economically important species grown in the homegardens towards the sustenance of the people. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present study was conducted in Kuzhicodu village; Kalkulam taluk of Kanyakumari district, at a distance of ca. 20 km away from Nagercoil, the capital of the district. This village lies between 77 16 and 77 24 of the eastern longitudes and 8 15 and 8 26 of the northern latitudes. The altitude of the study area is 107m above sea level. People of the area belonged to Nadars, Nayar, Sambavar castes. Most of the people live in concrete houses, others live in thatched huts. Gardening is the main hobby which also yields income to the family. Domesticated cattle and poultry yield additional income. Rice is the staple food of the people. Most of them consume tapioca and other tuberous food crops at evening. The survey of homegardens was undertaken in 2013 and 2014. Within the pool of available residences, the homegardens were visited regularly to notice the plant species growing in the households. Sampling took place in plots of 10 10m(200 m 2 ) which has been shown to be a representative sample. The collected plant specimens were dried, processed, mounted and identified with the help of regional floras (Gamble and Fischer 1921-1935, Mathew 1991, Nair and Henry 1983, Henry et al. 1987, Henry et al. 1989). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A total of 485 taxa belonging to 347 genera and 105 families were identified from the rural homegardens of Kuzhicodu village, Kanyakumari District. The habit wise distribution of species revealed that the number of herb species was highest (253 species) and it was followed by shrubs (96 species) trees (87 species) and climbers (49 species). Of the 485 plant species, 101 families were angiosperms, 3 families were Gymnosperm (Araucariaceae, Cupressaceae, Cycadaceae) and one was a Pteridophyte (Davalliaceae). http://jsrr.net 29 ISSN: 2249-7846 (Online)
Number of species Science Research Reporter, 6(1):28-43, (April - 2016) The dominant and co-dominant families were Poaceae (39 species) and Euphorbiaceae (34 species) followed by Asteraceae (31 species), Fabaceae (27 species), Acanthaceae (26 species), Rubiaceae (21 species), Araceae (17 species), Amaranthaceae (15 species), Malvaceae (14 species), Convolvulaceae (12 species), Lamiaceae, Solanaceae and Verbenaceae (10 species each), Apocyanaceae and Cucurbitaceae, (9 species each), Caesalpinaceae (8 species), Mimosaceae and Moraceae (7 species each), Arecaceae, Cactaceae, Commenlinaceae and Rutaceae (6 species each), Amaryllidaceae and Nyctaginaceae (5 species each), Agavaceae, Annonaceae, Bignoniaceae, Liliaceae, Myrtaceae, Oleaceae and Rosaceae (4 species each), Araliaceae, Asclepiadaceae, Asparagaceae, Balsaminaceae, Capparaceae, Crassulaceae, Orchidaceae, Oxalidaceae, Portulacaceae, Sapotaceae, Vitaceae and Zingiberaceae (3 species each). Twenty families had 2 species each; however fortyone families were monospecific. Subitha et al., A Comparison between the plant diversity of homegardens of Kuzhicodu village was significantly higher (485 species) when compared to homegardens in southwestern Bangladesh 419 species (Kabir and Webb, 2008), Mendez et al. (2001) documented 324 plant species in Nicaragua, 122 species in Assam homegardens (Das and Das, 2005), 103 speciesrural households in Eastern cape province of South Africa (Cocks and Wiersum, 2003), 101 species in Cuba homegardens (Wezel and Bender, 2003), 76 speciesin Savadkouh/Iran homegardens (Khoshbakht et al., 2006), 168 species in Santa Rosa in the Peruvian Amazon (Padoch and Jong, 1991) and 179 species in homegardens of Java (Soemarwoto, 1987). Rugalema et al. (1994) listed 53 tree species from the homegardens of Bukoba, Tanzania and Guillaumet et al. (1990) encountered 60 tree species in Mexican homegardens. Jacob and Alles (1987) recorded 27 tree species in the homegardens of Kandy, Sri Lanka. On the Indian sub-continent, 87 tree species were reported from homegardens in Assam by Das and Das (2005) and Jose and Shanmugaratnam (1993) found a total of 71 tree species in 80 homegardens of a village in Kerala. However, in the present study 87 tree species were recorded. Homegardens in Kuzhicodu village are major sources of ornamental plants, medicinal plants, food plants and plants used for building purposes. Maroyi (2013) reported that vegetables, fruits, ornamental and medicinal plants were the most important useful plants in homegarden. Consequently, food crops including herbaceous plants and vegetable and fruit yielding trees and shrubs abound in the homegardens (Caron, 1995; Mendez et al., 2001; Vogl et al., 2002; Wezel and Bender, 2003). The crop combinations found in the homegardens are strongly influenced by the household and nutritional complementarity with other major food sources, besides ecological and socioeconomic factors (Christanty et al., 1986; Asfaw and Woldu, 1997; High and Shackleton, 2000; Vogl et al., 2002; Alavalapai et al., 2004). Although, interest in homegardens has been mainly focused on producing cash crops and wood production. Krishnankutty (1990) has reported that homegardens provide 74 to 84% of total wood requirements in Kerala, and also generate some additional cash income (Torquebiau, 1992; Dury et al., 1996; Mendez et al., 2001; Yamada and Gholz, 2002; Shanavas and Kumar, 2003; Scherr 2004). The timber yielding plants are Albizia lebbeck, Artocarpus hirsutus, Borassus flabellifer, Tectona grandis, Thespesia populnea, Cocos nucifera, Mangifera indica, Schleichera oleosa, Syzygium cumini, Syzygium jambos, Tamarindus indica, Terminalia catappa, Artocarpus altilis, Artocarpus heterophyllus, Areca catechu, Azadirachta indica, Ficus benghalensis, Morinda coreia, Cassia fistula, Magnolia champaca, Bambusa vulgaris, Bauhinia acuminata, Delonix regia, Ficus callosa, Ficus religiosa, Hevea brasiliensis, Tephrosia purpurea, Acacia auriculiformis, Acacia mangium. Some of the plants used in construction purposes Artocarpus hirsutus, Tectona grandis, Cocos nucifera, Mangifera indica, Tamarindus indica, Artocarpus altilis and Artocarpus heterophyllus. It is concluded that these homegardens were found to be complex systems with plant diversity conserved through their use. The results suggest considerable potential for the establishment and development of homegardening systems for the sustainable supply of subsistence livelihoods, while contributing to biodiversity conservation.
