Indian Standard IS : 9662 ( Part I ) - 1980 CODE OF PRACTICE FOR CONSTRUCTION AND ASSEMBLY OF LEATHER SEALING CUPS PART I U CUPS 0. FOREWORD 0.1 This Indian Standard ( Part I ) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 31 December 1980, after the draft finalized by the Leather Sectional Committee had been approved by the Chemical Division Council. 0.2 The leather sealing, cups, are used as gland packing for pneumatic and hydraulic system presses. Sealing cups may be of different shapes and designs depending on the particular use, namely U cups, U cups ( Doubled ), M cups, K cups, etc. 0.3 The sealing cups are made from either full chrome tanned leather or combination tanned leather. The various requirements for leather of such types. have been given in IS : 3020-1976*. The cups are cut according to the shape and design from the type of leather selected. 0.4 At the instance of the Heavy Engineering Corporation Ltd, Ranchi, that such an item of acceptable quality was not available in our country, the Committee considered their request for formulating such codes of practice for construction and assembly of leather sealing cups for various types of cups so as to promote these production indiginously. It is also felt that small and cottage scale producers are likely to take up the manufacturing of these cups. The material requirements, shape and dimensions have been covered in IS : 8863 ( Part I )-I9787 which is a necessary ad.junct to this standard. 0.5 In formulating this standard, assistance has been derived from the Czechoslovakian standard CSN 02 90 12-1961 Leather-sealing-cups, directive for construction and assembly. *Specification for leather for oil seals (first reoision ). tspecification for leather sealing cups: Part I U cups. 3

IS:9662(PartI)-1980 1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard ( Part I ) lays down directions for construction and assembly of leather sealing cups, U cups. 2. TERMINOLOGY 2.1 For the purpose of this standard, the definitions given in IS : 1640-1960* shall apply. 3. CONSTRUCTION AND ASSEMBLY 3.1 Directions for Construction 3.1.1 The area for sealing cups should be chosen as per the diameter of sealing areas given in IS : 9664-1981t. 3.1.2 Construction of sealing area should be chosen in such a way that during assembly sealing should not get altered beyond the sharp edges of threads. 3.1.3 Wearing surface for sealing should be smooth. Chromium plating of the frictional surfaces is recommended only in cases where precision of the sealing is desired. 3.1.4 Care should be taken to ensure accuracy of concentricity as the cup has to serve only as a sealing and not as a guiding element. 3.13 In order to increase the life of the cup in places where the cup has to operate in water, frictional areas should be lubricated with emulsive grease during operation. It should be ensured that emulsive grease could easily reach below the functional part of the cups. 3.1.6 Example of appropriate constructional setting- is illustrated in Fig. 1 in the case of U cups. Dimensions for cross sections are given in IS : 9664-1981 t. 3.2 Directions for Assembly 3.2.1 The functional surfaces shall be cleaned carefully without damaging them and by a mild coat of mineral oil ( pctrokum jelly ). 3.2.2 The frictional surfaces of cups are examined to avoid scratches or similar defects and the cut off wall of the cups shall be examined to avoid defects like longitudinal cracks, wrinkle, cuts, etc, which are likely to impair the function of the CUPS. Glouary of termr relating to hides, rkim and leather. tspecification for diameter of sealing arem for use of leather cups. 4

H 7 : for D.............f 7 The above specified tolerances are the maximum and it is possible to choose a closer tolerance depending upon the production equipment and precision involved in production. FIG. 1 SETTING DESIGN OF U CUPS ( DOUBLED ) 5

IS : 9662 ( Part I ) - 19S6 3.2.3 During assembly of sets of top cups, the cups are inserted into the packing space one by one in such a manner that, after assembly, the complete assembly should not get crossed. Leather cuttings should be inserted between top cups as filler. 3.2.4 Sharp metallic tool should not be used as assembly aid. 3.2.5 Packing cover should be tightened by means of separate opposite screws, symmetrical to the whole circumference. 3.26 After tightening, the cups should be only lightly clamped together between the housing rings and thrust rings, as excessive tightening may result in damage to the cups. 3.2.7 It is recommended that the cups should be softened before assembly. They should be soaked in molten tallow at about 50 C in case storage for a long period is required. After taking the cup out of the bath, softening of the hard places should be done by slight kneeding. 3.2.8 In hydraulic f water ) equipment, due to use for a long time, it will be necessary to drain the water from the sealing areas, clean the areas and the piston and preserve them by smearing grease. It is absolutely essential to lubricate the cups and protect them against desiccation or deformity. 6
