Background to De Beaurepaire Wines Home of 2018 Australian Wine of the Year. Since planting their first vine in 1998, the de Beaurepaire family s 53-hectare, single estate vineyard has grown into a renowned boutique producer of French-style wines. Founded by Richard and Janet de Beaurepaire, and now joined by their children, Amanda and Will, De Beaurepaire Wines is a multi-generational family operation with a terroirdriven winemaking focus on French-style wines using precision viticulture and sustainable farming methods. The de Beaurepaire family originates from Beaurepaire-en-Bresse in Burgundy, where their surname translates to from a beautiful sanctuary or haven with a story that is over 1,000 years old. The family s history is heavily entwined with the story of Burgundy and France including the 11th century epic, Le Conte du Graal (Quest for the Grail). Arriving in Australian 100 years ago, and with family wine operations in the Yarra Valley in Victoria from 1970, in 1998 Richard and Janet sought to honour the wines of their family s Burgundian heritage by starting an exhaustive search for terroir similar to area around Beaune in Burgundy. After a number of years, they discovered and then founded a new wine region at Rylstone in the Central Ranges of New South Wales, 3 hours from Sydney, which is the closest approximation of Burgundy in Australia an inland location, in the mountains producing a very cool, continental climate. Most importantly they discovered a valley with shallow sandy-loam soils on limestone bedrock much like the Côte d Or on which they planted 120,000 vines. Winemaking is a combination of French and Australian techniques producing 14 wines that are elegant, vibrant, complex and food-friendly together with a focus on sustainable practices in the winery and vineyard. De Beaurepaire Wines is a participant in EntWine and Freshcare the Australian Wine Industry s Sustainability Programs. The De Beaurepaire wine range includes méthode traditionnelle sparklings, white, rosé, red and dessert wines which are ranged at over 30 of Australia s best restaurants, many of its most luxurious hotels and trendy bars. De Beaurepaire Wines is one of only 12 approved suppliers to Australia s largest hotel group, Accor (Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery, Fairmont) and also an approved supplier to IHG (Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza). In 2018, De Beaurepaire Wines was awarded by Winestate Magazine, 2018 Australian Wine of the Year and 2018 Australian and New Zealand Sweet Wine.
