How the Oregon Wine Competition Works Wines are scored on: quality, typicity, balance, and structure Six judges - chosen from Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers, established wine writers and experienced judges - are separated into two panels of three, who judge the competition wines individually, single blind over two days. Wines are NOT scored comparitively. a. Flights are composed to encourage palate longevity for our judges. b. All bottles are securely covered from delivery to completion to insure impartiality. c. Information given to judges is limited to vintage and varietal composition. Maximum score is 20 points, and medals are awarded in the following point structure: a. Silver Medal: 16-17.5 points, from two of three judges in a panel. b. Gold Medal: 18-20 points, from two of three judges in a panel. c. Double Gold Medal: 18-20 points, from all three judges in a panel. Best of Show is awarded to three wines, one within each wine category (white, red, specialty - see http://www.theoregonwineexperience.com/wine-competition/ for details. a. All Double Gold wines become Best of Show candidates. These are grouped by category (white, red, specialty) and tasted single-blind by all six judges, who give a new score to the wine. b. Best of Show is awarded to the highest scoring wine in each category. c. If no Double Golds have been awarded in a category, Golds become Best of Show candidates. If no Golds are awarded, Silvers become Best of Show candidates. Page 4
