Flowers City Farm Fest Plant Guide 2015 Location: The Dudley Greenhouse, 11 Brooke Ave, Boston, MA Penny All Season Pansies Adaptable to range of growing conditions. Flavor is slightly like wintergreen. Very colorful blooms. Edible. 60 70 days. Majestic Giant Pansies 4 blooms, do better under low light/short day conditions of winter and early spring than other varieties. Edible. 90 days. Lupine These hardy perennials are long lived and require very little maintenance. The flowers look great in a meadow or garden, as well as bouquets. Also known as perennial lupine. Nightshades Tomatoes Big Beef Large, avg. 10 12 oz., mostly blemish free, globe shaped red fruit. They have full flavor among the best and ripen early for their size. Broad disease tolerance. Indeterminate. 70 days to mature. 1

Black Cherry Bred in Florida by the late Vince Sapp, the round, 15 20 gm., fruits are almost black in color. The flavor is dynamic much like an heirloom. High yielding. Indeterminate. 64 days to mature. Brandywine Brandywine's luscious flavor is "very rich, loud, and distinctively spicy." The large fruits, often over 1 lb., have a deep pink skin and smooth red flesh. The medium tall, potato leaf plant is best staked or caged. Indeterminate. 78 days to mature. Cherokee Purple Medium large, flattened globe fruits. Color is dusky pink with dark shoulders. Multilocular interior ranges from purple to brown to green. Relatively short vines. Indeterminate. 72 days to mature. Green Zebra A delicious, tangy salad tomato, ripe just as the green fruit develops a yellow blush, accentuating the darker green stripes. The 3 4 oz. fruits are the ideal size for slicing into wedges for salads. Productive over a long season. Indeterminate. 72 days to mature. Sungold Exceptionally sweet, bright tangerine orange cherry tomatoes. Vigorous plants start yielding early and bear right through the season. Tendency to split precludes shipping, making these an exclusively fresh market treat. The taste can't be beat. 15 20 gm. fruits. Indeterminate. 57 days to mature. Super sweet Cherry Supersweet 100 is a reliable cherry tomato with prolific yields of great tasting, 15 20 gm. fruits produced in large clusters. Widely adapted. Indeterminate. 60 days to mature. 2

Striped German The flat, medium to large, variably ribbed shoulder tomatoes are shaded yellow and red. The marbled interior looks beautiful sliced. Complex, fruity flavor and smooth texture. Medium tall vines bear 12+ oz. fruit. Indeterminate. 78 days to mature. White Cherry Appealing, pale yellow cherry tomatoes average 15 20 gm. and have a good, mild taste. Plants are compact and easy to pick. Indeterminate. 59 days to mature. Yellow Pear The tall, vigorous vines bear quantities of small, 3/4 1 oz., lemon yellow, pear shaped fruits. Mild flavor. Indeterminate. 70 days to mature. Peppers Ace Bell Pepper Huge yields of medium sized 3 4 lobed fruits. Has apparent tolerance to blossom drop as nearly every flower produces a pepper. Widely adapted but performs particularly well in cool climates where bell peppers are difficult to grow successfully. Best for early crops. 70 days red ripe. Biscayne Pepper Fruit is long and light green. Plant is between 24 30 tall and yields 3 lobed fruit. Early, productive Cubanelle. 60 days pale green, 80 days red ripe. Golden Ghost Beautiful fruits avg. 3 1/4" X 1". They are extremely hot as hot if not hotter than Habanero and reasonably early for this type of pepper. More prolific than Habanero in regions with short summers. Big, bushy plants. 3

Habanero Avg. 2" x 1 1/4", wrinkled fruits ripen from dark green to salmon orange. This extremely pungent habanero may be used fresh or dried. Goddess Long, thick walled, smooth fruits are borne on large plants. Avg. 8 9" long, the fruits are mild when yellow and moderately sweet when they ripen red. Best for pickling due to their mild flavor but also suitable for fresh market. Islander 3 lobed, medium size, thick fleshed peppers with a mild, slightly sweet taste. Fruits ripen through a showy stage of violet, yellow and orange streaks, eventually turning a rich, very dark red. Mellow Star Japanese Shishito pepper for cooking or salads. Avg 3 1/2 4" heavily wrinkled fruits are thin walled, mild (no heat) when green and slightly sweet when red. Eggplant Orient Express Eggplant Attractive, slender, 8 10" long by 1 1/2 2 1/2" diameter, glossy. Ready up to 2 weeks before other early varieties, it features an ability to set fruit in cool weather as well as under heat stress. Tender, delicately flavored, and quick cooking. 58 days to mature. Nadia Uniform, 7 8" long by 3 4" diameter, dark purple fruits are glossy and blemish free. Tall, sturdy plants can set 4

fruit under cool conditions. Green calyx. 67 days to mature. Mangan Glossy and very dark purple fruit, avg. 4 5" long by 1½ 2¼" diameter. High yielding and early. Great for pickling. 60 days to mature. Herbs Scallions and Purplettes Mixed Basil (Thai, Italian, Purple, Citrus, Spicy Bush) Flat Leaf Parsley Mixed Herbs (Dill, Parsley) Lettuce Green Forest Romaine lettuce for full heads. Slow bolting, has smooth ribs for easy packing/handling. Grows early, tall, and dark green. 56 days. Vulcan Beautiful red leaves that are crisp and mild. Early lettuce. 52 days. Two Star Traditional Boston variety for Spring and Fall. Medium green, thick, leaves (sturdy head). Slow to bottom rot. Excellent butterhead quality. Some resistance to lettuce mosaic virus. 52 days. Brassicas Toscano Kale Italian heirloom. Dinosaur kale. Rich, tender leaves have softer texture than curly green kale. Tolerant of hot and cold weather. 30 days baby, 65 days to mature. Portuguese Kale 5

Taste and texture similar to collards. Plant grows up to 2 ft high and 2 ft wide. Space plants 18 36 apart so they have space to reach full size. Best for spring or fall harvest because it tends to get tipburn in hot weather. 80 days to mature. Red Russian Kale Stems are purple; leaves are flat, toothed, and dark green with purple veins. The plants mature medium tall and leaves are tender compared to other kales. For salads and light cooking. Collards Tall productive plant.
