Maya the Bee cupcakes
INGREDIENTS FOR 12 CUPCAKES MIXTURE 1 egg 125 g butter 100 g honey 300 g flour 250 g yoghurt ½ sachet of baking powder 1 sachet of vanilla sugar 2 tsp of cinnamon Juice of one lemon Grated zest of one lemon BUTTER CREAM 165 g butter at room temperature 250 g icing sugar 1 tbs of milk Green food colouring ALSO Black food colouring pen Green food colouring pen Pink food colouring Approx. 100 g golden yellow fondant icing Approx. 50 g sun yellow fondant icing Approx. 50 g brown fondant icing Approx. 20 g white fondant icing
PREPARATION 1 First of all, melt the butter, honey and vanilla sugar in a pan. 2 Now mix the egg, yoghurt and lemon juice in a bowl, add the melted butter mixture and continue stirring. 3 Mix the flour, baking powder and cinnamon and add to the liquid mixture with the grated lemon zest. 4 Line the 12-hole cupcake tray with paper cases and spoon the mixture into them.
5 Preheat the oven, set it to top and bottom heat and bake the cupcakes at 180 C for approx. 20-25 minutes. 6 Leave to cool when they come out of the oven. 7 Now make the butter cream. To do so, beat the soft butter for around 5 minutes until it is pale and creamy. 8 Gradually add all the icing sugar until it is completely blended with the butter. Then beat the mixture for another 2-3 minutes.
9 Finally, add the milk and green food colouring and beat until the food colouring is evenly distributed. 10 Now it is time to make the faces for Maya and Willy. First of all, cut out 12 circles from the golden yellow fondant icing. I used a round cutter with a diameter of 5 cm for this. We recommend dusting the working surface with icing sugar to stop the fondant icing sticking. 11 Maya s hair is now cut out of the sun yellow fondant icing. You will need 6 pieces of hair. I made a template with stiff paper to fit the size of the cut-out circles. 12 Do the same for Willy s hair using the brown fondant icing. Again, you need 6 pieces of hair.
13 Use the white fondant to mould 6 pairs of round eyes for Maya, and 6 pairs of oval eyes for Willy. 14 To make the feelers, roll 24 short lengths of black fondant icing, mould 24 very small yellow balls and stick them to the tips of the feelers. 15 Dampen Maya s hair slightly with a brush and stick to the 6 cut-out circles. 16 Do the same with the eyes.
17 Finish the eyes with a green and black food colouring pen. I used small white balls of fondant icing and stuck them onto the pupils to give the eyes an extra sparkle. 18 Use a black food colouring pen to draw the mouth and nose. 19 The feelers are stuck onto the head at the left and right. 20 As a finishing touch, brush some pink coloured powder onto the cheeks.
21 Now do the same for Willy. First stick on the hair and eyes, then finish the eyes. Paint on the mouth and nose. Stick on the feelers and brush on the pink cheeks. 22 Now you can finish the cupcakes. To do so, spoon the green butter cream into a piping bag and use the very fine serrated nozzle to decorate the cupcakes. 23 Decorate the butter cream with the fondant icing faces of Maya and Willy and your cupcakes are finished. 24 Pop them into the fridge until you want to eat them. Take them out of the fridge half an hour before you want to eat them to give the butter cream time to soften.
