STAFF Carmela Geer Executive Director carmela@edwardkinghouse.org Anthony Geer Program Manager anthony@edwardkinghouse.org Walter Perryman Nancy Toletti Custodian Receptionist Board of Directors Carol Sarro, President Sarah Rivard, Vice President Penny Fitch, Secretary Phyllis Finn, Treasurer Dr. Anthony Regine Valerie Kalwak Deb Winthrop Collette Bernard Richard Adams Marie Everett Oscar Chilabato Ray Chestnut Barbara Peters Teresa Trifero, Member Emeritus Lynn Ceglie, Newport City Council Jeanne Marie Napolitano, Mayor of Newport The King House Times is a publication of The Edward King House Senior Center 35 King Street, Newport, RI 02840 401.846.7426 Hours: 9:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday Lunches Served Daily at Noon. Evening and weekend hours vary. We re on the web! www.edwardkinghouse.org Our Mission The Newport Senior Center at the Edward King House provides an active and enriching environment in a warm, welcoming, attractive setting for residents of Newport county fifty years of age or older. Membership includes exercise classes, health and wellness workshops, various educational programs and social events. The Center provides supportive services attuned to the diverse needs of today s senior adult. The King House Times March and April 2016 From the Desk of the Executive Director... Dear Members, I have been struggling for days now on how to communicate with all of you some of the pressures that come with re-imagining what our programs and services could look like for our community and implementing them. It is so important to ensure that you are not only engaged in all that our beautiful City has to offer but to also understand what it takes to make it all happen. And then the phone rang... On the other end was a member who called to tell me that she just wanted to take moment to tell me how much the King House has meant to her in the past year. She said, It s like magic. One night I am worried about a problem I am having with my Medicare benefits and the next day, the King House had the answer for me. She continued, I know it doesn t seem like much but I couldn t sleep at night with this problem hanging over my head. I went in to see the SHIP specialist and in a snap my problem was fixed and I learned what I needed to do to keep it from happening again. I am so grateful. Her words touched me to the core and I was renewed in my energy to support our mission to ensure that the seniors in our community have every opportunity to remain active and independent for as long as possible. And then it hit me... MAGIC. It all happened like magic she said. Oh, how I wish it were magic. The truth is, there is nothing magical about what we do here at EKH. The combination of hard work, collaboration, conviction and tenacity is what makes our team of professionals and volunteers go above and beyond to elevate our program to the heights it reaches every day. As the need continues to grow, the funding continues to diminish. We struggle every day to find news way to keep the lights on! This is where I lose sleep. I am afraid that the community, our civic leaders and even our participants may not fully understand how important our role is in the community. I also fear that you, the seniors we serve, may not know that as we are not municipally funded, we are not state or local employees. The maintenance of our beautiful building does not come from the sky. Oh, but how I wish it did. And so, we need your help. Send an email, write a letter, make a phone call. Tell our community and state leaders what this program means to you. Tell them that we deserve their support. Better yet, tell them that YOU deserve their support. Your power as taxpayers, voters and consumers places you in a position to move mountains. In the coming weeks, I will be reaching out to all you to help me to help our policymakers and fiscal managers better understand what we do and what we need. In the meantime, let the world know what your senior center means to you and the community. Help me make the MAGIC happen! Sincerely, Carm

An exploration of how human consciousness exists outside of the body. 5-6:30 PM on the 3 rd Thursday of each month at EKH Starting March 17 th The aim of the group is to explore and deepen our understanding of what has been learned about human consciousness from people who have had near-death experiences ( NDEs ) and have reported an amazing journey after they have been revived. We will review and discuss actual documented experiences along with the findings of various researchers and scientists, all of whom have various theories about how this happens and what it can tell us about the transition from life as we know it. This is not connected with any organized religion or religious belief. Much of the information will be provided by the International Association for Near Death Studies ( IANDS, at www.iands.org). The group s facilitators are active members of IANDS who have personal experience in this area. Please register for this group in advance.
