WATERMELON UPDATE IF A CRISIS SITUATION ARISES, CALL 877-599-9595 IMMEDIATELY School Nutrition Association Annual Conference NWPB returned to the School Nutrition Association's annual conference held in mid- July in Boston, Massachusetts. This year, there were 3,530 foodservice attendees and 1,437 directors of the 7,165 individuals that attended the conference. According to the attendees we did not disappoint. Commodity boards and those in the fresh produce industry continue to attract engaged and ready audiences for the fresh fruit and vegetable grant. Most of the attendees expressed their appreciation for the NWPB's ability to provide free materials for schools. We are always so thrilled at the positive results from this show. The annual Produce Marketing Association's Fresh Summit expo will be held October 18-19th in Anaheim, California. The NWPB booth, #2733, will once again feature watermelon mastermind Chef Joe Poon, National Watermelon Queen Brandi Harrison, and once again will feature recipes to sample with help of Chiquita & Cal- Giant. The annual watermelon industry reception will be held at Bowlmor Lanes (formerly 300 Anaheim) located in the Anaheim GardenWalk where you will have a guaranteed good time. We are still in the planning phases so stay tuned for more information in the next update. NWPB is excited to add another successful in- store promotion weekend to our list of Canadian retailers. National Watermelon Queen first runner up Allyson Brake was on hand at four Freson Bros. store locations on August 1st and 2nd to help promote their first- ever US Watermelon Fest. The promotion included watermelon eating and seed spitting contests, watermelon bowling, and sampling of course! The queen was interviewed by four different radio stations and even did a few live on- air radio spots encouraging residents at the Grand Prairie and Edmonton- based stores to stop by and purchase a watermelon! The event was a great success for Freson Bros. The feedback from the stores has been fantastic, said Freson Bros. Advertising Services Director adding, Allyson was a fantastic Watermelon Queen and did the Watermelon Promotion Board and Freson Bros. proud at the events and on the radio. Deadline is 9/5!
