Learn all about the good luck and fortune you ll have for 2013 by reading what each food symbolizes below. PORK & SAUERKRAUT: Pork is eaten all over the world as a food that symbolizes progress, wealth and prosperity. Not only do pork and sauerkraut taste great together, they ll bring you good luck if eaten on New Year s Day. The reason is pigs are forward thinking creatures, all four hooves point forward and they root forward, and the long strands of sauerkraut symbolized long life. HOPPIN JOHN: Hoppin John is a steaming bowl of beans and rice that often look like coins. It is believed that eating beans on New Year s Day will bring better luck in the year to come. According to tradition, a coin is added to the pot and whoever gets the coin will get rich. COLLARED GREENS: It is easy to see why this could be a good luck food. With the vegetable s green color and folded appearance, they resemble money. Cabbage, collards, kale, and chard are all greens that are symbolic of good fortune. CAKES: Round shaped cakes and breads are eaten all over the world on New Year s Day. In most countries, a coin or a trinket is hidden inside the cake. The recipient to get that slice is said to have good fortune all year long.
