Meter Setup for Corn Using Large Sweet Corn Disk Move vacuum meter baffle tab (A) to upper position (B). IMPORTANT: Use field checks to verify and fine tune the double eliminator setting. Double eliminator should be positioned to cover from one quarter to one half of vacuum hole. The tooth to the far right of double eliminator (the one under adjusting screw) is used. Set double eliminator to one quarter position for seeds between 1980 seeds/kg (900 seeds/lb) and 4400 seeds/kg (2000 seeds/lb). Set double eliminator to one half position for seeds between 4400 seeds/kg (2000 seeds/lb) and 7040 seeds/kg (3200 seeds/lb). Use regular (long) vacuum meter brush. TALC APPLICATION IMPORTANT: Some insecticide-treated seed is coated with commercially applied talc. It is important that the recommended amount of talc be added in addition to talc already on the seed. Hopper Size 58L (1.6 bu) 106L (3 bu) Talc Application Amount of Talc 120 ml (1/2 cup) 240 ml (1 cup) For vacuum level, see VACUUM LEVEL FOR CORN USING A52391 OR A52904 SEED DISKS in Operating the Vacuum Meter section. Installing Double Eliminator for Sweet Corn and Edible-Beans-Flat Type Seed Disk NOTE: Double eliminator (A) is used to displace any extra seeds carried in vacuum hole. "Saw-tooth design" gradually covers part of vacuum hole. Hole (G) is used for edible beans and hole (I) is used for sweet corn. 1. Open vacuum meter. See ACCESSING THE VACUUM METER in this section. 2. Remove meter from hopper. Save wing nuts for reassembly of meter. 3. Install double eliminator (B) in housing (C). 4. Insert dual-lock fasteners (D) through housing and hole (E) of double eliminator (B). 5. Insert cam nut (F) into rear of housing at hole (G). Install screw (H) through double eliminator and into cam nut (F). DO NOT tighten. 6. Install sweet corn or edible-bean disk (A) and attach with hub handle. NOTE: Seed disk should turn smoothly with light contact or small gap between seed disk and housing. Turn seed disk by hand and check gap between seed disk and housing. Seed should NOT leak around circumference of meter. 7. Turn seed disk by hand and check gap between seed disk and meter housing in section (B). If disk turns too hard or if seed leaks through gap, adjust hub position. See ADJUSTING METER HUB in this section. 8. Turn cam nut (C) to increase or decrease vacuum hole coverage. The object is to cause double eliminator (D) to knock doubles off disk but not knock singles off. When double eliminator is in position, tighten screw (E). Set all rows the same. 9. Close meter and attach to hopper using wing nuts previously removed. A-Disk B-Gap C-Cam Nut D-Double Eliminator E-Screw Seed Knockout Wheel The seed knockout wheel (A) is used to insure that certain seed types are fully released from seed cell. Wheel projections engage seed cell holes, forcing all seeds and foreign material to be ejected. The seed knockout wheel is required when planting sorghum, mono-germ sugar beet and sweet corn seed. Sugar beet and sweet corn seed can have sharp edges and is typically irregular in shape, creating a potential for seeds to become lodged in the seed cell. Some sorghum seed contains large amounts of foreign material which can also become trapped in cell or cell holes.
Installing Knockout Assembly NOTE: The knockout wheel (A) is used to insure that certain seed types are fully released from vacuum hole. Wheel projections engage vacuum holes, forcing all seeds and foreign material to be effected. NOTE: The seed knockout wheel is required when planting sweet corn seed. Sweet Corn seed is typically irregular in shape, creating a potential for seeds to become lodged in vacuum hole. 1. Open vacuum meter. See ACCESSING THE VACUUM METER in this section. 2. Loosen screw (B) and remove wiper assembly (C). 3. Install knockout assembly (D) with hardware (B) loosened in step 1. NOTE: When closing dome, verify wheel is running in the track on seed disk. Knockout Assembly For Corn, Sugar Beet and Sorghum Shown Vacuum Level for Corn Using A52391 or A52904 Seed Disks Use seed supplier's information to calculate EXAMPLE: If there are 5637 seeds/kg (2556
seed size in seeds/kg or seeds/lb. IMPORTANT: The proper vacuum level must be calculated for each corn variety. Obtain size in seeds/kg or seeds/lb by dividing number of seeds in the bag by the weight of the bag. seeds/lb), according to the chart, vacuum level should be set at 10 in. when using Large Sweet Corn Disk or 7 in. when using Flat Medium Edible-Bean Disk. AG,OUO6074,1216-19-04AUG00-1/2 Most corn seed can be planted near 100 percent of desired population when using small corn or standard corn seed disks (WHICH HAVE SEED CELLS) listed on preceding page and adjusting vacuum level appropriately. Occasionally, seed spacing can be improved on hillsides and when planting some corn seed which is difficult to singulate with cell-type seed disks, by using a flat-seed disk. Difficult seeds to plant include varieties with mixed sizes, mixed shapes, combinations of sizes and shapes, long and slender seeds, seeds with a sharp point (germ) and others. The flat disk HAS NO SEED CELLS and requires use of a double eliminator and knockout wheel. The double eliminator is used to knock off excess seed while knockout wheel is used to keep vacuum holes free of debris. Large Sweet Corn Disk and Medium Edible- Bean Disk are two flat-seed disks which can be used for improved seed spacing for seed between 3300 seeds/kg (1500 seeds/lb) and 7040 seeds/kg (3200 seeds/lb). NOTE: Because the Medium Edible-Bean Disk singulates more seeds per revolution than the Large Sweet Corn Disk, it operates at a slower RPM, lower vacuum levels can be used. Being able to use a lower vacuum level can make a difference when having to decide whether one or two vacuum blowers are required. Because the Large Sweet Corn Disk has 40 holes per revolution and the Medium Edible- Bean Disk has 50 holes per revolution, different knockout wheel assemblies are required. Use knockout wheel AA37348 for Large Sweet Corn Disk and knockout wheel AA38844 for Medium Edible-Bean Disk. Set seed transmission according to population rate charts for Large Sweet Corn and Flat Edible-Bean Disks.
