COFFEE THAT HELPS FARMERS, THEIR COMMUNITIES & THE ENVIRONMENT.

THE EVOLUTION OF NESCAFÉ PARTNERS BLEND TM Under Nestlé s Creating Shared Value Strategy, we understand that for our business to be sustainable over the longer term, we must create value for our shareholders and value for society at the same time. This includes our consumers and customers, our own people, the farmers who are our suppliers, our environment and the communities in which we operate. As a part of this strategy, Nestlé is committed to developing sustainable agricultural practices and we have been involved in a number of initiatives for many years. NESCAFÉ PARTNERS BLEND, our first Fairtrade Certified TM coffee, was created to help solve this longstanding problem in El Salvador and Ethiopia. THE GLOBAL COFFEE MARKET The coffee market continually fluctuates depending on supply and demand. Too much coffee in the global market causes prices to fall, sometimes to levels far below the cost of production. Market volatility particularly causes problems for small farmers who are reliant on coffee sales for their livelihoods and lack financial and other capacity to weather difficult times. While prices have been better in recent times, the underlying problems remain - and small farmers will benefit from security and stability of income and funds to invest in their businesses and communities. WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY? The United Nations defines sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In other words, we need to ensure that farmers in these countries not only receive a fair price for their coffee, but that their sources of income are developed to support their families into the future, in a manner that respects their lands and communities over the long term. OUR WORK IN BRIEF We have been directly collaborating with coffee farmers for over 30 years since the first Nestlé coffee agronomist was hired to work in the field. Over the years this work has evolved into an initiative known as Sustainability concentrating on three important areas: economic social environmental In 2002, we co-founded the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI Platform) and this group has been working closely with farmers to encourage and implement sustainable approaches to coffee growing.

WHAT IS FAIRTRADE? Fairtrade Certification is a unique, independent system. More than 5 million people farmers, producers, workers and their families across 58 developing countries benefit from the Fairtrade system. Choosing Fairtrade provides an easy way for businesses and consumers to invest in helping these farmers develop their businesses and tackle poverty for themselves and their communities. Fairtrade delivers a better deal for farmers and producers in the developing world through: A fair and stable price that covers the cost of sustainable production The Fairtrade Premium - an additional sum of money given to the farmer cooperative groups for business and community investment Security of long-term contracts Improved working conditions Environmentally sustainable farming methods Support in gaining knowledge and skills needed to operate successfully in the global economy WHY NESCAFÉ PARTNERS BLEND TM? 100% Fairtrade Certified TM Quality Arabica beans from El Salvador and Ethiopia Ensures farmers get a fair and stable price for their coffee beans Provides additional resources and support for farmers and families to improve their lives Expertly roasted. It s not just exceptionally good coffee, it s good coffee that s good for the farmers, their families and their communities too. So every sip is that much more satisfying. WHY IS IT UNIQUE? Fairtrade is the only global certification system which provides the farmer cooperative groups with an additional sum of money, the Fairtrade Premium (usually 10-15% of the minimum price) used for investment in social, economic and environmental development. Examples include building roads, schools and health clinics. How the Fairtrade Premium money is spent is decided democratically by the members of the cooperative. THE FAIRTRADE LABEL A product is Fairtrade Certified TM if it carries the Fairtrade Label an easy way for consumers to recognise and choose products that have met internationally agreed Fairtrade Standards.

FAIRTRADE COOPERATIVES BENEFITING FROM NESCAFÉ PARTNERS BLEND TM El Salvador The farmers who supply NESCAFÉ Partners Blend belong to eight Fairtrade Certified TM cooperatives and these in turn are part of a larger cooperative group called Proexcafe, totalling over 1000 members. For further information please visit www.proexcafe.com Ethiopia We are currently working with the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union, who supply us with the high quality, Fairtrade Certified TM Ethiopian Arabica beans that are used in NESCAFÉ Partners Blend. SUSTAINABILITY PROJECTS IN EL SALVADOR & ETHIOPIA The following provides an overview of our initiatives, Fairtrade and NESCAFÉ Partners Blend. Economic Sustainability Social Sustainability Environmental Sustainability Ethiopia Fair prices and technical assistance to grow better coffee and increase their yield Clean drinking water for 5,500 in Hama Kebele and back to school with new backpacks Introduction of a jet washing station which cut water use by 90% El Salvador Assistance to diversify their produce to generate alternative sources of income Medical facilities and housing for the cooperatives and an educational project for local children Assistance with sustainable farming techniques
