2 Trivia Whiz Nothin but Net Invented in December 1891, the game of basketball has bounced its way through history to become one of the world s most popular sports. The first basketball hoops were peach baskets, and balls had to be retrieved after every basket, or scored point. Dribbling was not part of the game s original rules. Players could only throw the ball to each other. Basketball became an Olympic event at the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin. The National Basketball Association was created in 1946. The bumps on a basketball are called pebbles. A warm basketball bounces higher than a cold basketball. The three-point shot wasn t adopted until the 1979 1980 NBA season. During a pro game, a player may run as much as 3 miles. Laugh Lines: Cookie Comedy Stir up some laughs with this batch of jokes for National Cookie Day, Dec. 4. Q: What does the gingerbread man put on his bed? A: A cookie sheet. Q: What do you get when you use a deer-shaped cookie cutter? A: Cookie doe. Q: Why do basketball players like cookies? A: Because they can dunk them. Q: Why did the Oreo cookie go to the dentist? A: Because it lost its filling. Q: Why did the cookie cry? A: Because his mother was a wafer so long. Q: What cookie makes you rich? A: A fortune cookie. Think what a better world it would be if we all, the whole world, had cookies and milk about 3 o clock every afternoon and then lay down on our blankets for a nap. Barbara Jordan Donating Toys and Joy U.S. Marines take on an annual mission of collecting donated toys so that children in need can experience the joy of the holidays through its Toys for Tots program. The charity was founded in 1947 by Bill Hendricks, a major in the Marine Corps Reserve. His wife, Diane, handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and wanted to donate it to a needy child in their hometown of Los Angeles, but the couple couldn t find an agency to donate it to. So Hendricks and his fellow reservists organized a toy drive, collecting over 5,000 toys for local children. The idea s success prompted the U.S. Marine Corps to adopt Toys for Tots as a nationwide project beginning in 1948. Hendricks close friend Walt Disney designed the first national Toys for Tots poster, featuring the familiar train logo still in use today. In communities across the country, toy drives and collection boxes encourage people to donate new, unwrapped toys, which are then given to area families. Since the program began, more than 500 million toys have been distributed to 250 million children.

3 Wit & Wisdom Traditional Holiday Treats All across the world, traditional desserts are a tasty way to celebrate the season. Sample these holiday treats: Linzer cookies. Austria s classic cake, the linzer torte, is made miniature by sandwiching jam between two almond-flavored cookies. A festive shape cut out from the top cookie shows off the filling. Bibingka. Traditionally baked in a clay pot lined with a banana leaf, this Filipino sponge cake is made with rice flour and coconut milk. Natilla. Similar to custard, this Colombian dessert is flavored with a dark brown sugar, called panela, and often topped with coconut, raisins and nuts. Lebkuchen. Germany s gingerbread cookies are typically glazed with sugar or covered in chocolate. Heart-shaped versions with iced-on messages are particularly popular. Pavlova. December brings summer to Australia and New Zealand, where meringue, whipped cream and fresh fruit combine to form a light, elegant dessert. Bunuelos. These crispy fritters are sold on street corners at holiday time in Mexico. Dough is shaped like a tortilla, fried, then topped with sugar, cinnamon and syrup. Panettone. This Italian sweet bread resembles a giant muffin and tastes like a fluffy fruitcake studded with raisins and candied citrus peel. Melomakarona. Holidays in Greece are made sweeter with these soft cookies flavored with honey and orange zest, then topped with walnuts or dipped in chocolate. BE SURE TO... 1. Check the bulletin board DAILY for additional activities or cancellations. 2. Listen to announcements. 3. When signing up for a trip to the doctor, put down the time as 30 minutes before your appointment. 4. No plastic, magazines or phone books can be put in the newspaper recycle bins. Do not put newspaper back in the plastic bag. Church Bus Schedule!!!!! Saturday 5pm...St. Thomas More Catholic Church Sunday 10 am... Decatur United Methodist Church

Scientists know that when the nose detects an odor, it is processed by sensory receptors that are connected to the parts of the brain that control memory and emotions. For many, the scent of vanilla often triggers pleasant recollections and is commonly used to promote a sense of relaxation and well-being. 1:30 Bingo Sunday Monday Tuesday 3:00 HYMN SING- ALONG FOLLOWED BY CHAPEL SERVICE 1:30 Bingo 3:00 HYMN SING- ALONG FOLLOWED BY CHAPEL SERVICE 1:30 Bingo 3:00 HYMN SING- ALONG FOLLOWED BY CHAPEL SERVICE 2 9 16 2:30 Arts and Crafts 6:00 Atlanta Botanical Garden Christmas Lights 3 10 2:30 Resident Council Meeting 2:30 Arts and Crafts 17 8:30-2:00 Doctor Runs 2:30 BINGO! 7:00 Movie and Popcorn 8:30-2:00 Doctor Runs 12:15 Birthday Luncheon 2:30 BINGO! 7:00 Movie and Popcorn 8:30-2:00 Doctor Runs 1:15 Bible Talk 2:30 BINGO! 7:00 Movie and Popcorn 4 11 18 23/30 24/31 25 1:30 Bingo 3:00 HYMN SING- ALONG FOLLOWED BY CHAPEL SERVICE Happy Birthday Sandra Turpin 2:00 Movie and Popcorn {24th} Happy Birthday Betty O Shields 12:00 New Year s Eve Lunch Party W/ Ben Thomas MERRY

6 Talk About It Milestone Memories From falling in love to celebrating a big birthday, a person s life journey is filled with milestones. Round up some friends and family and reminisce about the major events in your lives. Finishing school and entering the real world is often a memorable turning point. What path did you take after school? What kind of work did you do? Discuss milestones such as being promoted or changing careers. Have you ever had to move to a different city? What do you remember about that? If you ve been married, how old were you when you tied the knot? How did marriage change your life? Talk about becoming a parent and a grandparent. Look back on how you celebrated some of your major birthdays, such as when you turned 21, 50 or 65.
