How to Sneak Healthy Ingredients into Recipes JANUARY 3, 2014 BY MARIA LONG 3 COMMENTS We all must admit that once January 1st comes along, we all resolve to eat more healthfully. But let s get real, a few weeks into our New Year resolutions we start to crave our favorite foods. Eating more healthy does not mean you have to sacrifice the flavors you love, this post is to share a few recipes of how to sneak healthy ingredients into some of your favorite recipes. I was provided promotional materials from Grain Place Foods to conduct this recipes but all the opinions are 100% my own. I had never heard of Kamut Flour before, so I believe many of you might be asking what is this? KAMUT wheat is recognized by health professionals as a great source of nutrition, containing higher amounts of protein and minerals than modern wheat. It is also known as a high energy wheat due to its high percentage of lipids; and it s easy to digest. Organically grown and with a nutty, buttery flavor, KAMUT wheat is highly versatile and its natural sweetness makes it ideal for a variety of dishes including cereals, cakes, pastry and bread as well as savory side dishes, stuffing and burgers.
So how to sneak healthy ingredients into our favorite recipes? Our first recipe was to make a homemade pizza recipe using KAMUT flour. You know I am a bit of a pizza snob so this was a challenge I was a little skeptical about. Lightening was awful this time of day. So this was not the best picture. I did take it off the cookie sheet at the end to crisp up the crust slightly. Kids actually did not complain about the pizza and I served it with honey to add to the crust. They ate the entire pizza and asked for more. Combine flour and sea salt in a bowl. Combine the warm water, yeast and oil in a measuring cup. Stir and let sit 3 to 4 minutes until the yeast dissolves. Slowly add the yeast mixture to the flour, mix and form into a ball of dough. Knead the dough for 10 minutes. Lightly oil a mixing bowl with a little olive oil, place the dough in the bowl. Cover the bowl with a warm, damp towel. Set in a warm place to rise until the dough doubles in size, about 1 to 2 hours. Lightly oil a 12" pizza pan or spread a little corn meal on a baking stone. Pat and stretch the dough into the pan or to the desired shape on a baking stone, pinching up the edges to hold the filling. Lightly oil the pizza dough with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Evenly spread pizza sauce on the dough. Spread all other ingredients on top of sauce. Let sit for 10 minutes to rest. Preheat the oven to 400. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the bottom of the crust is light brown. Slice and serve.
