history savoir-faire Edition Porcelaine was set up and founded by Carl Thomas, a literature student who decided to reopen the former family workshop so he could begin creating his very own range of decorative tableware. Carl Thomas spent his childhood between France and the city of Marrakesh, where his father owned a ceramics manufacturing business. He developed a strong passion for art from a very early age, especially the ceramic arts, glassmaking and similar related disciplines. He later worked alongside his father, who had become established as a porcelain decorator, in numerous workshops in the French city of Limoges, discovering and learning about all facets of working with porcelain as a material. Inspired enormously by this whole world of methods, precision and creativity, Carl took the decision to reopen his father s workshop and use it to launch his own company: Edition Porcelaine. His ambition? To put his acquired experience, his artistic sensibility and the advice imparted by his father and all the people he had the opportunity to meet during his youth to good use by producing high quality, top-ofthe-range modern pieces. «I would like Edition Porcelaine to become recognised for its respect for the ancestral knowledge and know-how used in the manufacture and production of Limoges porcelain. In fact, it s due to these techniques that we are able to offer products of exceptional quality. What we sell are really works of art.» Surrounded by both former colleagues of his father and new recruits, Carl Thomas has wasted no time in producing his very first new collections and getting the family workshop operational and back in business again. In order to produce exceptional pieces, it is essential to work with very high quality materials. Edition Porcelaine therefore works only with porcelain of incomparable fineness and whiteness that combines the qualities of both lightness and solidity. The colour pigments used to decorate the porcelain are rare materials sourced from countries all over the world (such as Japan, Germany and Spain). Edition Porcelaine is continuing the ancestral traditions of the famous Limoges fine porcelain producers. The porcelain is decorated by hand by some of the region s very best craftsmen and women, who turn every single piece into a unique work of art. The colours are applied using various methods and techniques, some of which are closely guarded workshop secrets! Once the work of applying the decorations is complete, the porcelain is fired at a very high temperature (over 1,150 C) in order to allow the colour to impregnate the enamel. This stage is essential to permanently fix the colour decorating the porcelain so it does not fade or alter over time. It is this very mastery of the ceramic arts together with a respect for both tradition and skilled manual work that enables Edition Porcelaine to produce pieces of exceptional qua-lity from its workshop. 4 5
