Ask about Sailing Lessons - Adult classes & Junior Classes Sailboat Racing News The 2016 sailboat racing season is about to start. The sailors are working on their boats to get them ready for the fun times, and the challenging moments on the water. Let us also welcome the new skippers and look forward to the interaction in the races to come. Some of our sailors/racers had the good fortune to be able to sail the warmer waters of Florida this past winter. Here is a story of venturing into the unknown!!! Florida Sailing - As fall progresses and winter approaches, the fleet generally hunkers down and puts up for the winter. Lisa and I looked at the pros and cons of wintering here and decided Florida was much warmer. So we packed up our ComPac 27 sailboat and trailered it south where we put in near Bradenton, FL. We planned several getaways over the winter. One fun one we did in March was a jaunt down the coast to Key West. We spent a lot of time planning, preparing, and upgrading prior to the trip. We had never sailed that far before, or for that long. There were many unknowns, but we did know we were going and it was going to be a blast! We took off at dawn, delayed by the land fog that set in overnight. It cleared quickly as we motored out to sea. We took a direct route, motor sailing the whole way, as we had wonderful seas and a following breeze. It was an amazing sight viewing our first sunsets and sunrises at sea. The most amazing part of the trip down and back was the bioluminescence that exists in the water. Lisa and I were mesmerized watching the bow waves break with bursts of dancing light. The moon was also very bright, lighting up the sea, showing us the way. Key West, for those who haven t gone, is a blast. But for us the trip was about the journey and putting 400 miles under our belts. Our experiences were quite educational and will help us as we plan for trips to the Bahamas and Cuba. Patrick Gudat, Skipper Good planning and preparation also holds good for our local races. Get ready: check your equipment, get the cobwebs out of your crew, and enjoy the 2016 Sailboat Racing Season at the IVY Club. I ll see you on the water. Adam

Did You Know? Taco Thursdays A full Taco Bar is in the IVY Club Bar on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8:00. (Tacos are $1.50 each). If you are not receiving the Weekly Emails please get your email address to ivyclub@comcast.net. These emails will keep you up to date on all of the happenings at IVY. Bring your video games, movies, board games & craft items for your kids! If the Board Room is available they can hang out there while you enjoy a nice dinner in the dining room. BE AWARE! There are several trains each day on the railroad track at the Club entrance. In the past, the trains sounded their horns as they approached, but sometimes they don t!! So look both ways before crossing the track! Could you use some help with an upcoming event? If you saw the amazing transformation of the dining room at the Commodore s Ball, you would have experienced the awesome magic of Brenda s decorating talent! upcoming JunE events - Fishing Derby Winner! Brandon Berg is holding the big catch of the day! His dad, Brad Berg, was with him on this rainy day in April. Way to go guys! Emery, Steve & Nancy Scott s granddaughter, says Where s the sunshine? I m ready to go boating! June 9 - IVY Relays at the Pool June 11-2nd Saturday Tiki Bar, live Band June 19 - Fathers Day June 25 - Luau Sundays - Foxhole & Chicken & Pasta Buffet Taco Tuesdays Patio Grilling! Welcome to Our New Members Bettye Thompson Pierre Lewin and Heather Nick Dennis and Rebekah Deanna Dean-Cassidy and TJ Kerri Hutchison and Steve We re Glad You re Here! Pool Postings Sign your kids and grand kids up for the swim team. It s a great way to get them out of the house and active during the summer. If they sign up for sailings lessons too, then they can enjoy in and on the water activities. Contact the IVY Office for sign-up information. Also, it s dock days and we need your help!! If the pool is to be ready in time for filling, we need help with lots of projects before, during, and after the dock days weekend. Some of the activities are scraping and painting everything including the pool, anti-skid stripes, locker rooms, pump house, diving board frame, and more. We are hoping to have the main pool prepped in time but need help prior to dock days with paint scraping, pressure washing, and sealant removal. Come on down and lend a hand. We ll all enjoy the fruit of our labor in June. Patrick, Pool Director

On-Line Navigation Course The Coast Guard Auxiliary, in partnership with the Boat US Foundation, has launched a new education program for boaters, an online, self-study course called Modern Marine Navigation. Boaters that enroll in this course will learn, using their own computers or tablets, in the comfort of their own homes or boat cabins. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary instruction to the boating public has been declining for several years. At the same time the use of online self-study instruction has been steadily increasing. Leveraging this trend, the Auxiliary has authored and developed a stimulating new interactive online course called Modern Marine Navigation, with Web implementation and hosting by the Boat US Foundation. This is the only navigation course offered anywhere that has been completely vetted by the US Coast Guard Navigation Center. It will be the gold standard of navigation courses. This course opens a new distribution channel for Auxiliary boating education. If you want to learn new skills, or polish up your navigation training, you will understand that this project is an easy way for learning Modern Marine Navigation. The Modern Marine Navigation online interactive selfstudy course is now available at http://cgaux.org/mmn or by going to the Boat US Foundation website. The course is priced at $40.00. However, if you this promo code (0954706), the cost will be $36. You save 10 %. Recreational Boating Safety is the primary core mission of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Whether getting on the water with a boat or a personal watercraft, the Modern Marine Navigation Online Course can help boaters be safer and more knowledgeable. Cardinal s Game at Busch Stadium We re selling raffle tickets for 2 tickets to the game on June 5th. It s $10 per raffle ticket for a chance to win 2 game tickets along with a hot dog & a soda for 2 people. There are 2 sets of tickets being raffled so 4 people will be going to the game! There are already some IVY members going to the game so it will be a fun day at the ball park! The proceeds will benefit IVY Entertainment. More bands, more parties, more fun! For tickets, see Steve at the bar or Gracita Edwards. Barge Breakfast just got a whole lot better! Tony & Janet Delotis purchased 6 brand new Electric Skillets, along with the utensils, and donated them to the club! The food always tasted good on those Sunday morning Barge Breakfasts, but wait to you taste the eggs and bacon in a new electric skillet - with the coating not coming off the pans! Ask Paul about the Sunday Morning Barge Breakfasts - a great way to start your Sunday! FOXHOLE Welcome back to all the Snowbirds! It s time we start the 2016 season. If you are interested in sponsoring Foxhole, the sign-up board is located in the office. We are looking forward to the new season and hope to see you there! If you have a question about Foxhole, please call Judy or Brian Finn at (309) 688-8144. See you at the Club! Notes from the Bridge Just a quick note from the Bridge this month, as we have quite a bit of other information in the leaf. That s a good thing, because it reflects that we are off to a great start of the 2016 season. We ve already had some warm boating weather for the first boats in the harbor-there was even an April raft out. We will be having more of those, and will get the word out as it is a great way to spend time with your friends from the club. No boat? No problem...it s easy to get an invitation, just ask! Also, what a wonderful Commodore s Ball! Our club, and members, looked beautiful. Special thanks to everyone who helped Kim prepare for the event, and a particular mention of our members, Brenda and Mike Waag. They have an event decoration business, and had the dining room just sparkling! Make sure you come help during dock days so the rest of the club looks as good-there is always more work than workers, and all help is appreciated. See you at our club! Exciting News for Young Members! The Ivy Board recently approved a great new member initiative. If a prospective or existing member is aged 18-35, their dues will now be $50 a month for a one year membership. The club needs new young members to keep the club vibrant and sustainable and this initiative provides us a platform to get the word out to family, friends and new potential audiences. We need all members to help us get this message out. We will have printed copies of this initiative available in April. If you have a business, please consider posting. If you are on facebook, please like and share this message (see the IVY facebook page). If you have kids, grand kids or neighbors in this age group, talk to them! We appreciate everyone s help! There are so many things for young families to do at the Club. Swimming, the swim team, swim lessons, sailing lessons for all ages, Easter Egg Hunt, Kid s Halloween Party, Kid s Christmas Party, Fishing Derby & Wiener Roast, Cardboard Boat Races, plus brand NEW family events - to be announced! Spread the word to friends, family, co-workers and neighbors. Also, give the gift of IVY membership to someone you love!
