Abut Ebla (Transmissin) Ebla can be spread t thers thrugh direct cntact (thrugh brken skin r mucus membranes in, fr example, the eyes, nse, r muth) with: bld r bdy fluids (including but nt limited t urine, saliva, sweat, feces, vmit, breast milk, and semen) f a persn wh is sick with Ebla bjects (like needles and syringes) that have been cntaminated with bdy fluids frm a persn wh is sick with Ebla r the bdy f a persn wh has died frm Ebla infected fruit bats r primates (apes and mnkeys) Ebla is nt spread thrugh the air, by water, r in general, by fd. There is n evidence that msquites r ther insects can transmit Ebla virus. Only a few species f mammals (e.g., humans, bats, mnkeys, and apes) have shwn the ability t becme infected with and spread Ebla virus. Fruits and vegetables, such as mangs, shuld be washed befre eating. These prducts shuld nt be eaten if they have been bitten by bat (bat mt) r an infected human, mnkey r ape. Ambulances Ambulances take sick peple t get medical care at a clinic, hspital, r Ebla Treatment Unit. Ambulances are the best and safest way t g t the hspital t get treatment. Ambulance drivers will treat yu with respect. The ambulance team will help if yu cannt walk n yur wn. Ambulance drivers have been asked t turn ff their sirens, but smetimes, they use them t warn peple and vehicles t nt get in the way s that they can get t the sick persn quickly. Ambulance teams wear prtective clthing (PPE) t keep yu, thers, and themselves safe while wrking with sick peple. When yu are in the ambulance, the ambulance team may start giving yu medical care. Ambulance teams use chlrine t kill Ebla. Chlrine spray will nt harm yu. The ambulance will smell like chlrine, but the ambulance has plenty f air and is safe. Peple in the ambulance will be able t breathe freely. The stretcher is cleaned with chlrine after each patient leaves, s the stretcher will be clean and safe fr the next persn. Yu may be able t smell chlrine but the smell is nt dangerus. Breastfeeding Ebla can stay in breast milk even after yu feel better. If yu have survived Ebla, it is best nt t breastfeed IF yu have ther safe ways t feed yur baby. But if there is n ther way t feed yur baby safely, breastfeeding will still prvide the nutritin yur baby needs. 4

Burials Safe, Dignified, Medical It is very dangerus t tuch the bdy f smene wh is very sick r has died f Ebla befre, during, and after burial. Cntact with a persn wh is dying r a dead bdy is a cmmn way peple are infected with Ebla. As a persn becmes sicker and dies f Ebla, the amunt f virus in the bdy increases. Tuching a dead bdy is ne f the mst cmmn ways peple are infected with Ebla in Sierra Lene. Fr nw, we have t stp these practices r we can t stp Ebla. Calling 117 fr safe, dignified medical burials is a way t shw respect fr the persn wh has died while keeping yurself and yur family safe. Nt tuching the sick and calling 117 quickly will help prtect Mama Salne. During this crisis, all deaths shuld be handled as if they culd be Ebla. Call 117 r district call centers t reprt all deaths. When smene dies f Ebla, the virus remains in the bdy and spreads easily. The dead bdy shuld nly be handled by peple wh are trained in safe medical burial practices and are wearing prtective equipment. Washing the bdy and changing the clthes f a lved ne wh has died can spread the Ebla virus. Prtect yurself: D nt tuch, wash, r clean a persn wh is dying r has died. D nt tuch bdy fluids f a dead persn r anything a persn wh has died frm Ebla tuched while they were sick. Keep peple away frm the hme. Practicing safe, dignified medical burials is a way t shw respect fr the persn wh has died while keeping yurself, yur family, and yur cmmunity safe frm Ebla. Until we get t zer, we have t stp practices that spread Ebla. Ebla des nt change ur respect and lve fr thse wh have died. Hwever, fr nw we must stp practices that transmit Ebla. Safe burials are a way t shw respect and hnr thse wh have died. We all have a rle in stpping the spread f Ebla and ensuring that ur cmmunities practice safe burials. Family and cmmunity members can pray fr their lved ne frm a safe distance, and still make sme decisins abut the funeral while the bdy is being remved. Take a pledge fr yur wn safe, dignified, medical burial and share yur wish with yur family. I pledge that if I die frm Ebla, I want a safe, dignified medical burial t prtect my family and friends. Tell yur family that yu want them t hnr yur pledge t keep future generatins healthy and safe. Tell them that hnring this pledge will be an act f care and lve. Burial Teams Burial teams can help make sure Ebla des nt spread and can prtect yu, yur family, and yur cmmunity. After yu call 117 r district alert line, smene will cme investigate a reprted death. A burial team f trained individuals arrive and a member f the burial team will talk t yu abut the death. 5

The ther burial team members will put n prtective equipment t safely remve the bdy f the persn wh has died. Burial teams will help families understand the need fr a safe, dignified, medical burial and will treat the bdy with respect. The burial team will determine if a sample t test fr Ebla shuld be cllected frm the bdy. If the burial team needs t test fr Ebla, they will cllect a swab sample frm the muth f the persn wh has died and send it t the labratry t test fr Ebla. Test results fr Ebla may take 2-3 days. T keep yu, yur family, and yur cmmunity safe, the burial team must remve the bdy quickly and can t wait fr test results. The persn wh died will be placed in a prtective bdy bag by the burial team. The burial team will remve the bdy frm the huse in a prtective bdy bag, and take the bdy t a cemetery r burial space t safely bury the bdy. T prtect yu and yur family the burial team will disinfect the huse with a safe chlrine slutin. All items that the persn wh died tuched such as a mattress and clthing shuld be taken frm the huse and nt used by anyne else. Mattresses that have been burned will be replaced. If a swab was taken and sent t the labratry, a health fficial will fllw-up with the family t share the results f the Ebla test. Celebrate Survivrs Peple wh survive Ebla need hpe and scial supprt frm family, friends and the cmmunity. We must hnr thse wh have survived Ebla! We are all Ebla fighters! Accept survivrs and welcme them as heres back int yur family and yur cmmunity. It is safe t be arund smene wh has survived Ebla. If a persn has survived and recvered frm Ebla, they can n lnger spread Ebla t thers thrugh casual cntact. Chlrine Chlrine is a chemical used t clean. It is mixed with water t kill germs and viruses like Ebla. Healthcare wrkers use chlrine spray t kill viruses like Ebla. Chlrine spray will nt harm yu. Burial teams, ambulance wrkers, health care wrkers and ther Ebla respnders use a chlrine spray t kill Ebla in ambulances, at the patient s hme, and at burial sites. Healthcare wrkers knw hw t mix chlrine safely s that it kills germs and prtects yu. Yu may be able t smell chlrine but the smell is nt dangerus. Cmplacency: The Fight is Nt Over/ Ebla Stps with Me Ebla is real. The Ebla utbreak is nt ver. We cannt relax ur guard just because we are seeing signs f prgress. We must cntinue t wrk tgether t defeat this disease until we get t zer. Cmmunities have the pwer t stp Ebla, but we can t stp the fight until we reach zer new cases fr 42 days. 6

The fight will nt be ver until we have had zer cases fr 42 days here in Salne, and ur neighburs in Guinea and Liberia have had zer cases fr 42 days. Peple cntinue t becme infected with Ebla. This is hurting ur cmmunities and ur cuntry. We can win this fight, but it will take actin frm everyne t stp Ebla tgether. We shuld celebrate as a cmmunity and cuntry when peple g fr medical care and practice safe, dignified, medical burials. Fr nw, we must stp unsafe practices s we can stp Ebla in Sierra Lene. Many cmmunities have identified new ways t keep Ebla frm taking mre lives. Changing sme cultural practices fr nw will help t end Ebla. By sharing slutins and wrking tgether we will break the chain f Ebla. The Ebla utbreak is nt ver. We all need t wrk tgether t stp Ebla. Prayer is very imprtant and meaningful, but it is als imprtant take actin t prevent Ebla and get care if yu becme sick. Cntact Tracing Cntact tracing helps peple wh may have been expsed t Ebla get care quickly if they shw symptms f Ebla. Cntact Tracers are wrking hard t try t stp Ebla frm spreading. Health wrkers will visit the huse every day fr 21 days t check if anyne develps Ebla symptms. Please cperate with lcal health teams in their cntact tracing effrts. Cntact tracers will find and interview every persn wh came in cntact with the persn wh died frm Ebla. A persn is a cntact if they: 1. Slept in the same huse with an Ebla patient 2. Tuched the bdy r bdy fluids f an Ebla patient 3. Tuched items frm an Ebla patient Cntact tracing helps peple wh may have been expsed t Ebla get care quickly if they shw symptms f Ebla. Cntact tracers will visit the huse every day fr 21 days t make sure n ne in the huse becmes sick. Everyne in the huse will be quarantined- they will have t stay at hme fr 21 days withut leaving the huse r letting anyne else in the huse. Early Symptms/ Early Treatment The first Ebla symptms are fever, chills, weakness, and headache. These are very similar t malaria symptms. T be safe, think f these symptms as if it culd be Ebla and call 117 r yur district htline. If yu are sick, shw yur lve by staying 1 meter away frm yur family while yu wait. Call 117 at the first sign f Ebla symptms t prtect yurself, yur family, and yur cmmunity. If yu dn t have a way t call 117, cntact yur chief r a scial mbiliser. Prtect yurself and stay safe while yu wait. D nt tuch the sick persn, their bdy fluids, r anything they tuched. Supprt the sick persn by giving them as much liquids as they can drink and ral rehydratin slutin (ORS). Shw lve by keeping a safe distance. Stp Ebla frm hurting yur family and future. Early care helps the sick persn and can help prtect thers in the family. 7

Encurage the sick persn t drink plenty f Oral Rehydratin Slutin (ORS), water r ther liquids. Shw lve by keeping a safe distance frm yur family if yu are sick. Early medical care saves lives. Early medical treatment at an (ETU) can significantly imprve yur chances f survival and can save yur family frm further expsure. The later signs f Ebla are vmiting and diarrhea. If yu wait until these symptms appear, yu are reducing yur chances f survival, and yu risk infecting yur family and lved nes. Patients wh g t an Ebla Treatment Unit (ETU) r Cmmunity Care Center (CCC) are prtecting their families and lved nes by helping t prevent infectins in mre family members. Ebla/ EVD Negative Test Results It is great news when yur Ebla test is negative. But remember, yu can still get Ebla and yu need t take steps t keep yu, yur family, and Mama Salne safe. Keep yur test result letter with yu. Others may want prf that yu tested negative fr Ebla. Avid cntact with thers. A health care wrker will visit yur hme every day fr 21 days t mnitr yur health and refer yu t treatment if yu get sick. Shw that yu care and cntinue t prtect yurself, yur family, and yur cmmunity. Wash yur hands frequently with sap and water. Keep a safe distance frm thers (1.5 meters). Treat any death as if it culd be Ebla and call 117 r yur district htline fr a medically safe and dignified burial. D nt tuch bdy fluids f a dead persn r anything a persn wh has died frm Ebla tuched while they were sick. Be watchful f symptms that include a fever greater 37.5 degrees Celsius, severe headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, vmiting, abdminal pain r unexplained bleeding. Call 117 r yur district htline immediately if yu think yu have Ebla symptms again. Share yur stry with thers. Tell yur friends, family and cmmunity that yu are glad yu gt tested and knw yur results. Let ther knw that if they develp symptms, they shuld call 117 right away t keep their family and cmmunity safe. Make a Plan fr Yurself, Yur Family, and Yur Cmmunity Plan ahead and take actin nw. It is the best way t prtect yur lved nes and stp Ebla frm harming yur cmmunity. Make sure everyne in yur huse has a way t call 117 r yur district htline. Be prepared t call immediately if yu are sick. If yu dn t have a way t call 117, cntact yur chief r a scial mbiliser. Call 117 immediately if smene in yur hme gets sick. D nt tuch the sick persn r anything they have tuched. Advcate fr safe and dignified burials. If smene dies in the hme, make sure n ne tuches the bdy. Call 117 and tell yur neighbrs t d the same. Make sure yu have sap t wash yur hands. Washing yur hands with sap and water fr at least 20 secnds is an effective way t kill germs. Yu can als use hand sanitizer t clean hands. 8

Be prepared. Yu can stp Ebla frm harming yu and yur family. Knw the early symptms f Ebla fever, shivering/trembling, weakness. Early symptms f Ebla are similar t symptms f ther illnesses like Malaria. Call 117 r yur district htline if yu r smene in yur family gets sick, even if yu think yu may nt be sick with Ebla. Call 117 r yur district htline immediately if yu get sick. Early medical treatment saves lives. Plan fr what yu will d while yu wait fr medical help t arrive. Drink plenty f water, jelly water r Oral Rehydratin Slutin (ORS). This will give yu a better chance f survival. D nt tuch anybdy while yu wait fr an ambulance t prtect them frm getting sick. Ebla is nt ver. Thugh we are seeing signs f prgress, we must cntinue t wrk tgether t defeat the disease until we get t zer. Cmmunities have the pwer t stp Ebla. We must cntinue the fight until we reach zer cases fr at least 42 days. By making a plan, we can win this fight, but it will take actin frm everyne t stp Ebla. Quarantine When smene in yur huse has been cnfirmed t have Ebla, anyne wh had direct cntact with them will have t stay at hme in quarantine fr 21 days. This is hw lng it can take t develp Ebla symptms. Quarantine will help us stp the spread f Ebla. We knw it can be difficult, but it is necessary t keep yu, yur family, and yur cmmunity safe. After 21 days, if n ne has symptms f Ebla, yu will be released frm quarantine. During the 21-day perid, a cntact tracer will visit yur hme every day t check if anyne has becme sick. Let them knw if anyne in yur hme has Ebla symptms a fever greater than 37.5 C, severe headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, vmiting, stmach pain r unexplained bleeding. Fd and supplies will be left fr yur family t pick up. D nt take fd r any ther items ut f the quarantined area until the quarantine is declared ver. Security (military r plice) persnnel will help make sure yur family stays safe and that n ne leaves r enters the quarantined area. Security persnnel can call 117 fr yu if smene develps Ebla symptms, and they can cntact the District Ebla Respnse Center (DERC) if there are prblems with the delivery f fd and supplies. If smene gets sick in yur hme during the 21-day perid, call 117 immediately t get them quickly t medical treatment. D this t help stp Ebla frm spreading t ther peple in yur hme. If the sick persn is cnfirmed t have Ebla, a new 21-day perid must start again. Cntinue t prtect yurself, yur family, and yur cmmunity frm Ebla. Wash yur hands frequently with sap and water. Keep a safe distance between yu and thers. D nt tuch a sick persn r their bdy fluids. Early treatment saves lives. Call 117 r yur district number at the first sign f Ebla symptms: a fever greater than 37.5 C, severe headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, vmiting, stmach pain r unexplained bleeding. 9

Treat any death as if it culd be Ebla and call 117 r yur district number when smene dies. Practice safe and dignified medical burials. D nt tuch the bdy f smene wh has died frm Ebla. D nt tuch anything a persn wh has died frm Ebla has tuched. We all have a respnsibility t prtect urselves, ur families, and ur cmmunities frm Ebla. Yu can encurage thers t make the decisin t keep everyne safe by always calling 117 at the first sign f symptms and fr every death in the cmmunity. Schls Schl is where children shuld be as lng as it is clean and safe. The schls, yur parents/caregivers, and cmmunities are wrking tgether t make sure yur schl is clean and safe. Schls have been wrking hard t disinfect classrms and schl cmpund if schl was used as Ebla care facility. Many teachers, students, and staff may have family, friends, and c-wrkers wh have died f Ebla, and may need help and supprt. Teachers, students and staff may be Ebla survivrs. Smene wh has survived Ebla cannt spread the virus t peple in the cmmunity. Welcme them back int the schls and cmmunity. Students, teachers, and staff have been ut f schl fr many mnths. Repening schls is an imprtant step in getting back t nrmal! Schls are taking steps t prtect the health and safety f students, teachers, and staff. N ne will be allwed t cme t schl if they are sick, r have symptms f Ebla. If anyne gets sick at schl, the schl will have a separate rm available fr the persn until a health wrker can help. Everyne is encuraged t wash their hands ften with sap and water. Students are discuraged frm tuching ne anther and frm sharing cups, eating utensils and fd. Repened schls have Fever Mnitring Cmmittees, hand washing statins and Safe Bays fr sick children r adults. This is t keep children healthy while at schl. If Ebla cmes back in a cmmunity, schls will respnd quickly, and may clse again. Stigma There are ver 2,000 Ebla survivrs in Sierra Lene. Survivrs are heres. Peple wh survive Ebla need hpe and supprt frm family, friends and the cmmunity, nt t be islated r stigmatized. D nt stigmatize Ebla survivrs, islate them frm their cmmunities, r arrest them because they had the disease. Stigma and scial islatin f survivrs will nt help effrts t stp the spread f Ebla in Sierra Lene. In fact, it may discurage peple with Ebla symptms frm seeking care and put themselves and their cmmunity at risk. Survivrs and families affected by Ebla r stigma can get help by calling 117 r district htlines. District Cmmand Centres are peratinal t supprt the respnse in all districts. 10

Our health care wrkers, ambulance wrkers, cntact tracers, and burial teams are heres taking care f peple sick with Ebla. They are risking their lives t save yurs. Cperate with them and treat them with respect and dignity. Speak ut against negative cmments r negative behaviurs. Sexual Transmissin f Ebla Ebla survivrs shuld nt have sex fr at least 3 mnths after recvery. If that is nt pssible, survivrs shuld use a cndm every time they have sex. It is therwise safe t be arund this persn. Scientists cntinue t study Ebla and whether r nt it can be spread thrugh sex, and if s, fr hw lng. Ebla survivrs cannt spread the virus t thers thrugh casual cntact. Althugh the virus is gne frm bld and mst ther bdy fluids, the virus can stay in semen fr 3 mnths r lnger. As a safety measure, Ebla survivrs (bth men and wmen) shuld nt have any sex (ral, vaginal, r anal) fr at least three mnths. If they d have sex, they shuld use a cndm every time. Cndms may help prevent the spread f disease t sexual partners. 11
