Welcome to more than a century of neighborhood history. With its uneven walls and sinking base, this well-seasoned wood-frame building housing McMenamins Tavern & Pool speaks of decades past, in this long-rugged area called Slabtown. Inside, the comfortable ambiance and irreverent artwork gives a nod to years to come. Enjoy a pint and be part of the continuum that goes back to 1909, when an adventurous Bavarian saloon man named Fred Gansneder built this place. Originally conceived as a blue-collar resort, the building provided its boarders with all their immediate needs here under one roof: Second-story lodgings with four street-level storefronts including an all-night café, a grocery, barber shop and the first incarnation of the Tavern & Pool. After the workday, there was no need to wander beyond these walls! Outside and radiating from the tavern was a vibrant, ethnic, working class riverfront community: lumber mills, shipping docks, modest homes, streets choked with peddlers, streetcars and an increasing number of automobiles. Portland was baseball-crazy in those days Vaughn Street Baseball Park was just three blocks away, home to the Pacific Coast League Portland Beavers. The Marshall Street Ice Arena was just a few blocks in the other direction, where the city s professional hockey team, the Portland Rosebuds the first name to be etched onto the coveted Stanley Cup skated. By the 1950s, the once-familiar landmarks began to disappear, the mills relocated and the baseball stadium and ice arena were demolished. New construction and freeways altered the traffic and living patterns as economic factors transformed the character of the neighborhood. Throughout it all, the popular Tavern & Pool weathered the changes. In 1984, the venerable watering hole took on a colorful new life as one of McMenamins earliest pubs. The tavern (just T&P, in company parlance) quickly became known as a hip party spot. Still, as in decades past, friends, colleagues and neighbors gathered for good conversation, drink and food. It was a daily mix of suits, shoppers, hikers and bikers down from Forest Park and factory workers folks who wouldn t typically cross paths. These days, among the seemingly ever-changing restaurants, boutiques and day spas along NW 23rd, T&P remains a constant, a reminder of the salt-of-the-earth feel that once characterized this area. Through it all, the pub slowly sinks and shifts deeper into its sawdust foundation, a physical reminder of how it has settled into an evolving neighborhood.

Edgefield Hard Cider pint 6 Relying on the bounty that the Columbia Gorge offers us, we work with a local cider house that sources apples from cold storage to obtain fresh pressed apple juice throughout the year. The apples pressed off for our cider are primarily a blend of Red Delicious, Golden Delicious (added for color), Granny Smith (for acidity), Fuji, Galas, and Honey Crisp (to increase sweetness). Pale yellow gold in color, Edgefield Hard Cider has aromas of fresh apple, apple skin and apple pie spices. Lively on the tongue, fresh apple flavor dominates with hints of pear and honey. Crisp and refreshing, the sweetness in this semi-sweet cider is balanced out by the tartness. 6.8% ABV Finnriver Fire Barrel pint 9.50 Pressed from traditional bittersweet apples and aged in fire charred Kentucky bourbon barrels, this full-flavored cider offers a hint of whiskey, oak aroma, notes of caramel and vanilla, a lingering soft tannin finish. 6.5% ABV
