Mother Nature has been handing us some extreme events this summer, both good (great weather at the end of the season) and not so good (wind, rain, pool closing for several days due to flooding) but in true IVY Club fashion, we have persevered. There is still plenty of time to use the pool before the final day of this season, Labor Day, September 7th. Please come down and enjoy a few more warm days at the pool. I would like to take this time to thank all of the wonderful members who prepared the pool to open, tear it down again as we prepared for the flood, and clean up the pool and reopen it again this year. It is the dedicated and involved members that make the club, and the pool, alive and vibrant. In spite of the high waters we were also able to offer so many children at our club some swim lessons and stroke clinics that met the needs of a young family s busy schedule while making the best use of our beautiful facility. For that I am happy and thankful. A big thank you to our friends at Mt. Hawley Country Club for their hospitality to our members this summer as well as the Greater Peoria Family YMCA for allowing us to have practice time for our swimmers during the flood. I would also like to commend the nearly completely new pool staff that had quite a year to transition to their new summer home here at the IVY pool. Hopefully for all involved, both members and staff, next year will be a little less impacted by Mother Nature s wrath. That is all for now. May your autumn be filled with light and cool breezes, your winter mild, and your spring arrive early. We will see you at the pool summer of 2016. John Meisinger Did You Know? Bridge notes Oh, summer of 2015..June 30 saw the river reach 27.09 feet, the 8th highest level on record. Before and after, no boating for more than a month, which we understand to be the longest period where the river was closed to recreational boating. If we saw the fireworks, it was from land. So, we swam, eventually, and watched a movie in the pool. We danced on the deck and played bags on the barge. We entertained an adventurer who has paddled/ sailed the entire loop in a very small boat (if you didn t catch his story, go read about John Guider - The River Inside), and otherwise did our best to enjoy our Club. But, and you know what they say about life and lemons, as a club based on boating, it s tough to say this summer could qualify as lemonade.so, here s our plan: Let s make this fall a Second Summer. Starting with our regular Labor Day festivities, we plan to embrace every minute we can on the water and at the Club. We ll provide permission slips to play hooky if anyone is inclined,-your bridge certainly plans a few weekday excursions! We will have a full Labor Day weekend, supplemented with some of the activities we would have had on the 4th, including our silent auction. Items will be on display the week before, and we will close the auction on Sunday. The pig will be roasted-and can always use more pig-sitters Saturday night. We hope to have several entries in the Cardboard Boat Race on Monday, to make for an entertaining, if not competitive, event! October 3-4 - The Ron Slonneger PHRF Regatta Football in the bar on Sundays October 24 - Kid s Halloween Parade and Party October 24 - Adult s Halloween Party Start working on your costume! The Rib Cook-Off will be on September 13, keep an eye on the Weekly Happenings and bulletin board for more details. The Lobster Boil will wrap up the month on the 26th. Please do what you can to join us, and capture as much as possible of the Second Summer of 2015. See you at the Club!
