SLIL RECREATION COMMITTEE newsletter SLIL and AFIL June-July 2012 June and July AFIL and SLIL Activities AFIL and SLIL Cook-out and Movie Night Friday, June 8 AFIL Side Yard The SLIL/AFIL Recreation Committee has been busy planning activities for the residents. What a great time we had!! We cooked turkey dogs and had all the fixings! We are always substituting lower calorie foods where possible and serving tossed salads rather potato salads. Everyone met in the AFIL side yard. Our healthy menu consisted of: grilled turkey hot dogs, tossed salad, baked beans, baked chips and even sauerkraut as a topping for the hot dogs! After dinner we went over to the Chateau condo and watched the movie War Horse. For dessert we served popcorn and sugar-free ice cream sandwiches. The movie got rave reviews! 1

SLIL FRISCO ROUGH RIDERS GAME June 15 About 14 of the SLIL condo residents attended the Frisco Rough Riders Special Olympics game. We had terrific seats (close to the bullpen so we and third base line). Attendees received dinner, a Rough Riders baseball cap, souvenir program and a 15 minute firework show after the game! What a fun evening! Bobby Retirement Party June 16 5

Bobby had recently retired from the UT Southwestern Medical School (UTSMS) after 33 years of service. Bobby began working at the UTSMS in the landscaping/grounds crew and worked in that division his entire career. Bobby retired on March 31, 2012. So that called for a party!!! Bobby had relatives drive in from Louisiana and friends from bowling came too! In Bobby s honor, we served BBQ dinner with all the trimmings. After a delicious dinner, we headed into the Chateau for the awards ceremony. Bobby was presented with congratulatory letters from: Texas Governor Rick Perry, Former President Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter, the Dallas Mayor and City Councilman, and many others. All expressed their appreciation for his long and distinguished career. Bobby opened his cards (he had over 50!) and gifts from friends and loved ones. He received gift cards, money and even a retired baseball cap to wear. Enjoy your retirement Bobby!! 6

SLIL June Birthday Celebration - June 23, 2012 Happy Birthday Scott, Jesse and Digna We had a good turnout for our June birthday celebration. We served our famous birthday party menu of Little Caesars Pizza (they give us a great discount on our pizzas Little Caesars on 1503 N Story Rd in Irving). We also served a fresh tossed green lettuce/spinach salad and had a relish tray. For dessert we had birthday cake and sugar-free ice cream sandwiches. After the party we watched the Sound of Music and WOW many of the residents know EVERY word to the song and movie! 8

DART FARE INCREASE MEETING Tuesday, June 26, 2012 We had received word that DART was holding public meetings about the raising of fares for the disabled and seniors (reduced fare riders); as well as implementing a new time table that would only allow the reduced fare riders to ride during non-peak hours or pay a higher one-way fare. SLIL AND AFIL DID NOT SIT IDLY BY! We wanted to make sure our voices were heard and let the DART board know that a price increase of over 300% was unacceptable. Over 25 SLIL and AFIL residents, students, staff, family and friends, attended the meeting at DART headquarters. We had signed petitions from the residents and students that were unable to attend the meeting that we turned in at the sign-in desk at DART. We each had to sign in and go through metal detectors before entering the small auditorium. We even had two SLIL residents sign up to speak to directly to the DART board WAY TO GO!!!. There were many speakers and all opposed the fare increase and change to the hours of travel restrictions. Many of the attendees went straight from work to the meeting missing dinner. We did not get back till after 8:30 pm that evening. I was so proud of the attendees! They even obtained signatures of fellow riders on the train ride to the meeting!!!! We represented SLIL and AFIL proudly and our opinions were registered! Robin 15 Year Certificate Robin received a certificate of appreciation for her 15 years of service with Tuesday Morning. We are all so proud of Robin and her dedication to her job. Way to go Robin! Keep up the good work!! 10

The Residence Cookout Thursday, July 12, 2012 Kay emailed me this note about her and her residents and their cookout: We had 13 for our cookout tonight! It was great! They bring their extra meat for me to cook so they have meat pre-cooked for the rest of the week or to freeze. They are really excited about this! We eat very healthy - they ate a lot of simple coleslaw tonight (hint to Sharon!). We also had corn, watermelon, 100% whole wheat bread, decaf iced tea with Splenda (that they love) and water (of course). I make the tea with black and green tea bags together. They just found out they've been drinking green tea after all this time! Sounds like they had a wonderful evening of fun and fellowship! Great news Andy and Angela have donated a digital camera to the Residence and in the future we ll have pictures to share! Thank you Andy and Angela! SLIL July Birthday Celebration July 13, 2012 Happy Birthday Mitch, Andrea and Jenny!! Our July birthday party was a huge success! We served our famous birthday party menu of Little Caesars Pizza. We serve veggie, cheese, sausage and pepperoni. We also served a fresh tossed 11

green lettuce/spinach salad and had a relish tray. For dessert we served birthday cake. Our plans for a movie went a little haywire so we ve learning planning is the key!! hehehe 12

Kim s Reaffirming Baptism July 15, 2012 On Sunday, July 15, Kim reaffirmed her relationship with Jesus and was baptized at her church. Kim attends regularly and really enjoys her church. After the baptism, several of us went to IHOP for a celebration brunch. Congratulations Kim!! 13

SLIL AND AFIL ZUMBA CLASSES Bachman Recreation Center Our Zumba classes began at Bachman on Monday, July 17 and we are up and moving!! We have had 5 weeks of Zumba classes and we are getting more residents each week to attend. Some only attend to watch we are gently working on others to get them to attend with us. Our Zumba instructor, GT is so wonderful! He adjusted the class to a slower speed for the SLIL and AFIL residents. The class begins with warming up and we move faster with each song. GT stops after two songs and allows a 2-3 minute water break and then we start back up. Class is an hour long and the last 10-15 minutes, GT shows the residents how to exercise from their chairs. We have some residents that have a natural rhythm and keep up with GT the entire class!!! Stop by Bachman Recreation Center at 6:30 pm each Monday and join us (or watch us!!) 14

SLIL AND AFIL BURGERS LAKE July 21, 2012 It turned out to be a perfect day for spending time at Burgers Lake (located Fort Worth). We had some AFIL students and their parents attend; as well as SLIL condo residents and their families and friends. Kay had made arrangements for all of us to pay the kids price of $5 per person and they had even set aside a shady area just for SLIL and AFIL. Many of the attendees had never been to Burgers Lake 15

and some had not been to Burgers Lake since they were in high school!! The spring fed water felt great. We slathered on sun screen to keep from getting sunburned. A few of those attending went off the swinging trapeze, diving boards or just swam around and relaxed. We had a picnic lunch of turkey, ham and roast beef sandwiches, baked chips and pretzels, and sliced watermelon. We had plenty of bottled water and sugar-free fruit punch to keep hydrated. We arrived in shifts some as early at 9:00 am and left Burgers Lake after 5:00 pm. Thank you to the Burgers Lake family for the discount and the reserved picnic area. We had such a fun-filled and relaxing day. 16
