ISLE OF WIGHT NATIONAL TRUST ASSOCIATION AUTUMN/WINTER 2018/2019 PROGRAMME Thursday 16th August 2018 2pm Visit to the Postal Museum By special request, we have arranged a visit to the Island's very own Postal Museum on Fairlee Road (location map in yellow pages). (Free parking on site turn in up the lane) This is possibly one of the best collections in the country of Post Office memorabilia. Its collection of Post Boxes from various reigns and from Britain's outposts around the world shows just how postal services grew with Roland Hill's introduction of the penny post. It is a fascinating collection to wander round. You will be able to purchase tea and cake during the afternoon.n Cost 5.00 for LAST MINUTE bookings please ring Rachel Rudge on 864694 Wednesday 19th September at 2.15pm at the Riverside Centre Talk by Kevin Shaw on 'Samuel Pepys' Kevin Shaw returns for the first of our autumn talks to take us on an exploration of Samuel Pepys' lively life and his private diary written when he was a comparatively young man. The diary is a unique revelation of the man and his age. A real life story of life upstairs and downstairs at the time of the restoration of Charles the Second.

Tuesday 25th September Day Trip to visit Winchester City Mill (NT) and The Vyne (NT) departing from Yarmouth on the 10.05am Ferry (please arrive by about 9.20am to allow time to park AND buy your ferry ticket) returning 6pm from Lymington. Cost 18.00 per person including coach and gratuities (NOTE the Wightlink ferry fare is to be paid by individuals). Winchester City Mill - there has been a mill on the site since 932AD (Saxon times) and the Domesday Book identifies the mill as one of the most profitable in the country. A series of bad harvests in the early fourteenthcentury, coupled with Winchester having lost its status as the nation s capital, quickly reduced the value of many of the mills in the area. Winchester Mill was recorded as being derelict by 1471. In 1743, James Cooke began rebuilding the Mill and it is this building we see today, which continued milling to the early 1900s. The mill was gifted to the NT in 1931. The Vyne was transformed from a cluster of medieval buildings into a Tudor Palace between 1500 and 1520. This Palace became the home of William Sandys who was made Lord Chamberlain to King Henry VIII in 1526. In 1535, Henry and Anne Boleyn came to the Vyne and the NT has recreated this visit with a Tudor Mass in the Chapel. In the 17th Century the sixth Lord Sandys sold The Vyne to Chaloner Chute, the Speaker of the House of Commons who reduced it to its present day size (a third of the original size), modernised it and added the portico in 1654. After a varied history of usage since then, Sir Charles Chute left the house to the National Trust on his death in 1956. There is a café at the Vyne that serves simple lunches. Because car parking is expensive at Yarmouth please try and share cars

Wednesday 10th October at 2.15pm at the Riverside Centre Talk by Patrick Keen on 'Through the Amazon Rainforest to find the King George Falls' Patrick will take us on a unique and epic journey of discovery through the Amazon rainforest to find the remote and rarely visited King George Falls Thursday 15th November at 7.15pm at the Riverside Centre AGM followed by the long awaited Talk by Mitch Jones on 'Life as a Beefeater' Mitch Jones was one of the Queen's Beefeaters, as they are nicknamed, which have long been symbols of London and Britain. They ve formed the Royal Bodyguard since at least 1509. Their origins stretch back as far as the reign of Edward IV (1461-83). It is thought their nickname is derived from the fact that they were permitted to eat as much beef as they wanted from the King's table. Saturday 8th December 7pm at Arreton Community Hall Christmas Buffet and live entertainment This year we are having our Christmas event at a new venue with parking. Arreton Community Hall is on the Newport Sandown Road Full details of the event can be found at the end of the Programme BOOKING IS REQUIRED

Wednesday 9th January 2.15pm at the Riverside Centre Talk by Richard Smout on 'Vicars on the Isle of Wight' Richard is the Island Heritage Services Manager, responsible for the Museum Service and, as such, has an unrivalled access to the Island's archives on which to base his researches. His talk will be about well known and even notorious vicars who have served congregations on the Island over the years Wednesday 13th February 2.15pm at the Riverside Centre Talk by Paul Bingham on 'The National Trust on the Island from the 1920s to the end of the Second World War' Paul will be sharing with us the results of his fascinating research into the history of the Trust on the Island. He will show us how the NT grew from, in stages, from the acquisition of its first property on the Island in the 1920s. He will also introduce us to many of the varied characters who made the NT on the Island what it is today. Wednesday 13th March at 2.15pm at the Riverside Centre Talk by Bryn Davis on 'The Work of Amnesty International' In his talk, Bryn will be illustrating the vital work done by Amnesty International by showing us the scale and variety of cases they work on. He will also be explaining the campaigning work they do on the Island.
