No need to wait in line for Customs and Immigration. Your local guide will then meet you after you have claimed your luggage. Whether you prefer Paris of the East or megacity of the new millennium, one thing is really worth noting: this brash, energetic 21st century metropolis is really just a baby, young even by American standards. (Park Hyatt Park Room) Day 2, Thursday, 11/28 Shanghai B, L, D Your tour of Shanghai begins with a tour on colonial architecture in Shanghai given by a member of the Shanghai Historical Society. This tour will take you into some of the most important buildings along the Bund and French Concessions including the former Hong Kong Shanghai Bank. The Bund En route to lunch, we will travel along sycamore-lined boulevards into the heart of the French Concession. This section of the Paris of the Orient now hosts many arts-based businesses and art galleries that we can visit if you so desire. The afternoon will be spent discovering some of Shanghai s great shopping treasures. This might include a contemporary ceramics shop, the private studio of a renowned fashion designer or a shop selling cashmere for children. Dating back to Ming Dynasty this garden shows an impressive collection of rocks, small bridges and pavilions. Afterwards, you will have some time to stroll through Shanghai s Old Quarter and see true local life. From a wet market to an old lady selling handmade slippers this would be the best time to take photos. In the evening, a Gala Dinner will be hosted by Michelin 3 star Master Chef Anne-Sophie Pic from Maison Pic. DAY FOUR OPTIONAL +Shanghai Jazz Tour Day 5, Sunday, 12/1 Shanghai-Hangzhou B,L. This morning you will be transferred to Hangzhou. Marco Polo once called Hangzhou by far the most glorious city in the world. In the afternoon you will follow more closely in Marco s footsteps by your boarding a private gondola to tour the romantic West Lake. It s not hard to guess why countless Chinese philosophers, politicians and poets came, stayed and died here. As your guide will surely tell you: In heaven there is paradise, on earth Suzhou and Hangzhou. (Four Seasons Hotel Deluxe Room) Four Seasons Hangzhou Located near West Lake, Four Seasons second hotel in China draws on Hangzhou s architectural heritage to accommodate guests in Ming-style pavilions set within a traditional Chinese garden. Location: West side of West Lake. 78 Rooms www.fourseasons.com 4 B, L, D denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner China Escapades *For a full description of the available optionals, please refer to the final page of the itinerary.

Day 6, Monday, 12/2 Hangzhou B, L. At the foot of the temple s wooded hill, you will have the opportunity to marvel at the Peak That Flew From Afar, a limestone rock face decorated for over four centuries from the tenth century with more than 3,000 Buddhist effigies. Afterwards you will visit a Chan (Zen) Buddhist Temple where a monk will meet you and show you around. Lunch will be at the Temple s private restaurant (vegetarian food only). An historic capital for the manufacture of green tea, Hangzhou offers both a tea research institute and specialist tertiary education facilities. An American pursuing post-graduate study in tea will take you into the verdant surrounding tea fields to introduce the traditional and modern methodologies of cultivating tea and to present some of the key varietals, discussing their impact on flavor in the same way as wine. At a subsequent tasting in a nearby tea house you will compare machine and hand-made green teas as well as oolong and black teas. The aim of the tour is to enable you to feel informed in making a purchase at any tea market. Thus, should you wish, please request that your tour finish at such a market, either on your own or together with the specialist, where you can further research and explore your passion for tea white, yellow, green, red, black or oolong. Incense DAY SIX OPTIONAL +West Lake Impressions performance Day 7, Tuesday, 12/3 Hangzhou B, L. The Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279) was a time of explosive innovation in the arts and sciences. The energetic social force fueling that progress was the literati or scholar gentleman. After breakfast, you will be provided access to one of modern China s most powerful and exclusive private clubs. Drawing a parallel between the wealthy tycoons of the modern era and the scholar gentleman of the past, here you will be introduced to the Five Disciplines calligraphy, music, incense, flower arranging and tea at all of which the scholar gentleman of the past was expected to be proficient. Although these practices are sometimes grouped with tea culture, each is considered a separate route for the scholar gentleman to explore the Dao or inner truth. Tea Fields Later on you will be transferred back to Shanghai on time to board your international flight. Calligraphy 5 B, L, D denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner China Escapades *For a full description of the available optionals, please refer to the final page of the itinerary.
