Prognosis Te Puke Hort16A Hort16A vine survival chances are bleak This will possibly be the last growing season for most, if not all gold A high % of orchards will not make it through to the 2012 harvest Likelihood of successfully re establishing canopy on stumps is not looking encouraging at this stage Replanting may become the best option
Prognosis Te Puke Hayward Extensive primary symptoms on orchards Reports of exudates on both male & female vines severe in some cases (but may not be Psa V) Variable bud breakbreak and flower numbers Too early to make an accurate prediction on outcomes suggest a plan, spray and wait and see approach

Recovery Plan (outline) To date we have been dealing with a lot of unknowns which h is causing stress right iht across the industry Spring 2011 was always going to provide a clearer picture of our fate Prognosis assumes* that the orchards that succumb to Psa V will possibly require complete vine removal For those growers it may be that salvation is to find a more resistant rootstock to replant their orchards
Recovery Plan (contd) The target timeline to identify and bulk up a more resistant rootstock needs to be no later than 2013!
Industry Impact Analysis A plan to introduce resistant rootstock will hl help crystallise measurement of the financial i impact to the industry If feasible, it is proposed that this plan be incorporated into the industry impact analysis that KVH is preparing for its NPMS This document will now take on extreme importance in making representations ese s to Government and Banks for assistance
Assistance Required Biggest problems facing growers cutting out are: Servicing debt for 5 years of no kiwifruit income Finding the cash (approximately $60,000 per ha excluding debt servicing) to fund orchard re establishment until positive cashflow

Objectives Short-term: By 2013, find technical solutions to minimise the impact of Psa-V on the New Zealand Kiwifruit Industry Long-term: To develop solutions to eliminate the financial impact of Psa V. By enlisting the best scientific minds available globally.

Product testing Elicitors Elicitors are products that promote chemical reactions in the plant tthat t can result ltin defence systems being activated Not all elicitors are the same Some will assist the plant to fight bacterial infection, some will assist the plant to discourage pest attack It is important to know which pathway is activated by the elicitor in question, to avoid a response that is undesirable

Product testing Actigard Situation with Actigard is that it is expected to have full registration it ti within the next 24 hours The company who markets Actigard will have it on the shelves in merchants next week Can be used up to pre flowering Residue issues for fruiting vines are being assessed (for Northern Hemisphere supply) and a decision on availability for use post fruit set could be made within the next few weeks based on these results
Product testing Actigard Notes to those who wish to use it we have seen great results, but care must be tk taken not to overdose plants This has not happened easily with Hort16A offshore, but there have been some disasters with Hayward KVH will release a guide to the use of Actigard in the coming week to coincide with its availability As with KeyStrepto, a residue testing programme will be in place for Actigard use out of the allowable periods could impact ability to export fruit.
Product testing Phage Phage are viruses that target specific bacteria (they are a natural predator) dt The phage that has been isolated and purified by Omnilytics for the NZ kiwifruit industry, was sourced from NZ Phage attracted to bacteria and insert their genetic material This destroys the bacteria s ability to function

Product testing Phage Phage have cleared customs in NZ and are now bi being applied to seedling plants in our greenhouse testing programme We will have first results in about 25 days If these are very successful, we will work with the manufacturer to fast track t production and, in parallel, the regulatory process (this has already started)
The future Breeding is a key to the long term sustainability of the New Zealand dkiwifruit if it Industry While replacement varieties with Psatolerance/resistance are key targets, rootstocks and males with these attributes are also important In order to hit the 2013 target, ZESPRI and KVH are drawing up a plan to tk take some calculated l risks ik on bulking up rootstocks; and assessing the situation regarding males and pollination into the future
