Tips for an Alcohol-Safe Holiday Season Excessive drinking can ruin holiday celebrations. If you choose to drink, drink in moderation. Make food, music and socializing the focus of parties- not alcohol. Provide tasty alcohol-free beverages for your guests. Instruct bartenders to check IDs and to stop serving alcohol to any impaired guests. Make sure that impaired guests have a safe ride home with a driver who has not been drinking. Taxis, Tow-to-Go, and Zingo are all good safe ride alternatives. Don t drink and drive. Don t host an underage drinking party. Consider the consequences: arrest, jail time, fines, lawsuits, alcohol-related injuries and fatalities. Stop Underage Drinking 1,244 people died in alcohol-related crashes in Florida in 2007. 85 of the drinking drivers in these fatal crashes were under the age of 21. Alcohol kills more young people than all illegal drugs combined. Research shows that a young person s brain continues to develop until the mid twenties and that alcohol may damage the developing brain. Parents, teachers, students, law enforcement officers, store clerks, bar managers, government officials and concerned community members must all work together to change the alcohol environment and reduce underage drinking. Community Traffic Safety Team Program The Community Traffic Safety Team Program is a multi-disciplined federal, State, and local government-endorsed program developed to reduce the number of traffic crashes that occur on Florida roadways. The program was created in response to federal legislation (the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1990), which calls for local participation and solutions to traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities on local roadways.
