Wednesday, November 28, 2018 Special Visit from Kate Waind of King County Green Schools! Kate Waind By: Clara Sherwood Kate Waind from King County Green schools talked with the green team about current events going on with our environment. Some of the things she talked about were where the nearest landfill was, how we should start sorting, and how our taxes pay for landfills Something we should all know is; where is our landfills? Well the answer is, not very far away. Our landfill is in Cedar Hills, Maple Valley. Our taxes pay for landfills, there is no estimated percentage of the amount of money from taxes, but when you purchase something from the store, it is likely that some of the money you paid would be sent to support the landfill. I don t think we want that. There s another reason why you should be as eco-friendly as possible. Remember to take the pledge at https://peoplepower planet.com/take-thepledge.php Another Special Guest: Michelle Song of Nature Vision will come to visit Room 105 2:30 to 3:45pm Nov. 28th Learn how to conserve water with an interactive demonstration.
RECREATION School Sports By Laasya and Emma We interviewed Mr. Orm, our school s athletic director, about health, his kids, and also what he does to stay green. Welcome to the first official Green Grizzlies Newspaper! Every day, thousands of people do sports, whether it is football, soccer, baseball, or even some uncommon sports like martial arts or waterpolo. Most people consider themselves to be unathletic, because of those able-bodied sports lovers, but the truth is, everyone is athletic. Even if you don t do a sport, you can still get a lot of exercise just by going up and down stairs at school, or walking to the bus stop. Or, there is the dreaded P.E., a lot of kids dislike P.E. for the uniforms, or for those team sports where you can t help being hostile to the kids on their team, but physical education actually provides benefits for the average kid. Most pre-teens cringe when the thought of health comes to mind, thinking, Again? Do we have to?, but the truth is, it teaches you a lot of fundamentals about how to stay healthy to your full extent. A part of our exclusive interview, we asked Mr. Orm about his opinion of our football teams, and his answers were nothing but positive. Mr. Orm stated that the teams are Fine groups of young men who are all striving toward the same goals. Mr. Orm also said that he was proud of the progress that our teams have made. We have also received the dates of some important events! On Friday October 26, The Run Rock Read occured, and hundreds of teens showed up decked out in their musical genres and ages, reading, dancing, walking, and drawing all showed our school spirit for our annual fundraiser. Until our next posting, stay fit and stay B.E.A.R.S, Be Ever Awesome Recycling Students!
SORT IT OUT! Do not throw away COMPOST By: London T McMinn Food The compost bin is a tough one, because believe it or not so many things can go in the compost bin! Like food, paper trays, empty brown bags. But there are many things that should not go in the compost. Things like milk cartons, wrappers, plastic. Recycling is a easy one, but there is a rule. If paper is dirty then compost it! But there are somethings that are not dirty that do NOT go in the recycling. Like chips, food, non clean drinks, plastic utensils. Garbage is one of the things people love. Because it's just one bin! But if you just throw everything in just one bin, all the things that could have been reused and recycled are now all burnt up! Paper food trays Empty brown bags Greasy pizza boxes (empty) RECYCLE Empty bottles Empty cartons Empty cans Clean paper or boxes GARBAGE Chip bags Drink pouches or applesauce pouches Plastic straws and forks or spoons Yogurt cups (unrinsed)

Lisa Callen is a Democrat running for state representative. She supports all of the students in washington. She knows how to help because she works at the issaquah school district so she knows how to help kids. She thinks that some kids need more help socially and emotionally. She also thinks that we should reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment. She also thinks to protect green spaces (places where animals live). She also wants everybody to have clean air and water. She makes sure that everybody's voice is heard. Chad Magendanz is a Republican running for state representative. He has served two terms already so he has experience as a state representative. He wants to attract people with different backgrounds. He wants to reduce carbon emissions. He wants more counselors and nurses to help the kids. He wants more money for special education. Fun Fact: The ballets have a clean air and clean water initiative. TECHNOLOGY Drone delivery By: Arnav Nomula Companies like Amazon are thinking of using drones. This will help the environment immensely. It will help the environment by reducing carbon emissions. Google tried this by delivering chipotle burritos to kids at Virginia Tech. This is one small step for technology but a big step for humankind. POP CULTURE Avatar My Fa v Envi By: Isabelle Morceau ronme ntal M o vie This movie is the best in my opinion, so maybe you might like this movie if you watch it because this movie cares about the environment. In the movie the avatars fight to protect their plant/home/world from the humans, but some humans will stay at the end.
