March 2016 Volume 11 Issue 7 Yarbrough Awarded $1,000 Aquaponics Grant In December of 2015, Yarbrough School applied for a $1,000 Environmental Education Grant from the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality. The grant is funded through the Oklahoma Environmental Awareness License Tag program. We were notified in January that our Lobo GROW Aquaponics grant application had been selected as a winner and would receive funding. The first paragraph of our grant application reads as follows. At the beginning of this school year, Yarbrough began to establish a 750 square foot greenhouse in an existing metal building that had previously been used as a classroom. The greenhouse is to serve as a hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) laboratory for all students, supporting both hydroponic and traditional gardening techniques. Through this Environmental Education Grant, high school biology and environmental science students will research, design, construct and maintain a fully functioning aquaponics system to be added to our greenhouse. Upon completion, all students PreK through 12 th grade will have access to the system during school hours as well as during our 21 st Century Community Learning Center s afterschool and summer school programing. We are excited to begin our aquaponics project. Our science teacher Mrs. Gray is supervising the grant activities along with the help of Mrs. Derenda Aranda.
