DISCUSS FACTSTO QUICK FACTS QUICK FACTS WITH YOUR STUDENTS Half a cup of cucumber is a good source of vitamin K to help in blood clotting and a source of water. Nearly every bodily function needs water to operate. Even though cucumbers are considered vegetables, they are actually the fruits of a vegetable plant. They are in the same family as gourds, melons, pumpkins and squash. The expression cool as a cucumber has science behind it. The inside of a cucumber can be up to 20 degrees cooler than the outside. A pickle is a cucumber that has been brined. The University of Nevada, Reno is an EEO/AA institution. This material was funded by USDA s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program SNAP. It s believed that grapefruit was an accidental hybrid between the pummelo and sweet orange. The first American grapefruit seedlings grew in Florida around 1823. A Jamaican farmer named grapefruit when he realized they grew in clusters like grapes. The Grapefruit Diet became popular in the 1930s. It was thought that grapefruit burn fat, but this is not true.
