EXPERIENCE: Vineyard Consultant (2000 - Present) Provided consulting services to operating vineyards in all major California grape growing regions: problem diagnosis and recommendations for corrections; vineyard monitoring, quality assurance, and viticultural recommendations; crop and canopy management; soil management; production planning and budgets for conventional, organic, and sustainable vineyard operations; sustainable wine grape growing certification documentation. Provided consulting services to developing vineyards in Lodi, Delta, Sierra Foothills, Bay Area, and Central Coast: site evaluation for vineyard suitability; variety and rootstock selection; vineyard design, planning, and development; vineyard promotion and winery relations. Viticulture research: field experiments, viticultural topics, due diligence studies, and American Viticultural Area (AVA) petition development and processing. Director of Farming, Duarte Nursery (1995-2000) Managed all aspects of vineyard and orchard development and operations, including planning, organizing, scheduling, staffing, team building, and budgeting. Designed and developed over 1400 acres of vineyard and orchard. Wrote development and operational plans. Developed vineyard monitoring and quality assurance program. Marketed wine grapes and negotiated winery contracts. Provided technical assistance to nursery sales staff and customers. Viticulturist, Gallo Vineyards (1989-1995) Established and directed Gallo Viticulture Department, including agricultural laboratory and research program. Developed drip system scheduling, maintenance, and fertigation programs and grapevine bench grafting program. Contributed to the conversion from conventional to sustainable practices, especially in disease and soil management. Diagnosed vineyard problems and made correctional recommendations. 1
Field Supervisor, Gallo Vineyards (1987-1988) Supervised vine training, pruning, shoot thinning, trellising, harvesting, the making of cuttings and rootings, the collecting of budwood, and the planting of vines, trees, and cover crops. Monitored vine pests and diseases. Conducted soil surveys using a backhoe and presented results in reports and maps. Sampled wells, soils, plant tissue, and fruit. Evaluated water, soil, tissue, and nematode analysis results, created a computerized database from them, and made recommendations. Monitored soil moisture and scheduled irrigations. Viticulture Intern, The Herzog Company (1987) Performed and supervised various work involved in wine grape growing, including vine training, field budding, pest monitoring, irrigation, fruit maturity sampling, and tractor operation. Directed field crews in the harvest of 278 acres of wine grapes. Field Assistant, University of California Cooperative Extension (1986 and 1987) Monitored pests, sampled plant tissue and soil, collected data from field trials involving fungicides, herbicides, fertilizers, soil amendments, and crop cultivars. Worked with grape, boysenberry, apple, almond, peach, walnut, alfalfa, and several row crop commodities. Performed statistical analysis of trial data. Reorganized laboratory, repaired and serviced laboratory equipment, and analyzed soil and plant tissues. Research Assistant, University of California, Davis, Viticulture and Enology (1984) Collected, prepared, and analyzed berry samples for maturity and quality indices. Collected, prepared, and analyzed petiole, leaf blade, stem, trunk, and root samples for mineral nutrient status. Collected, prepared, and analyzed soil samples for general chemical characteristics and mineral nutrient status. Made grapevine shoot and root growth, leaf area, and leaf function measurements.
