January Newsletter Camellia Society of Modesto 2014-15 www.camelliasocietyofmodesto.org Cindy Cook, VP, sitting in for President Marvin Bort Dear Camellia Friends! Here we go into 2015.I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. Our Christmas party. Our annual Christmas party was held at Bel Piatta in Modesto. Thanks to our decoration crew for a lovely setting of white poinsettas and other festive displays. We welcomed the Lesmeisters and Schanz from Sacramento to our gathering. There was a very nice pasta buffet and a cookie exchange with lots of food leftover for an evening snack. We had a lively white elephant gift exchange where several hotly contested items were stolen. President Marvin Bort closed our party by leading us all in the carol, We Wish You A Merry Christmas. A good time was had by all. January preparation for the Camellia Show. This is our critical month for gathering sponsors. Think about those people with whom you do business and take the opportunity to ask if they would like to sponsor our show. We are a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization and our show brings in over a thousand visitors every year. It is an excellent advertising venue. If you have questions, see Barbara or Pat. We will have paperwork available at our next meeting on January 11 th. Bloomin Camellias! It is early for the spring flowers to be popping. The Warner s report multiple Debutantes and Tatas and Lemon Drops. My Happy Harlequin and Little Slam are out. Get out there and get the disbudding done for the best bloom results at the upcoming shows. Take some time to stroll through your garden and enjoy this winter season of the camellia festival of color. Happy New Year to everyone. Your Camellia Friend, Cindy Meeting Dates For 2014-2015 Club meetings for the 2014-15 camellia season will be held at a new address: One Church (Bethel Campus) 2361 Scenic Dr, Modesto, CA. Camellia Culture Corner Don Lesmeister The end of December is getting very cold and records show that, a cold December is followed by a cold January. So keep your eyes and ears tuned to the weather reports and be sure to water before a 32 degree or lower evening. Remember, it takes 2+ hours after plants are watered before they absorb the water. But don t water when the temperature has already reached freezing. The impact of cold weather is going to appear in a couple of weeks. Plants that were not watered sufficiently before the freeze will start to drop their buds (primarily Reticulatas and container grown plants). If you have containerized plants that were in a lot of shade during the cold spell, you can start moving them to a brighter area to motivate them to bloom a little faster. If the cold weather persist, blooms may be a little later, so be patient. Check your plants and do your final disbudding. The Hybrids like to set buds as soon as your back is turned. Most Camellia growers have different Gibbing schedules. In this area, the next week or so is about as late as it can be done with good results. Get ready for the shows. Remember, the first show is in Napa on February 7th. We hope ALL of you are excited about the next few months...the plants will start blooming and we will be able to see why we all grow Camellias! Your Camellia Friend, Don...keep your eyes and ears tuned to the weather reports and be sure to water before a 32 degree or lower evening. Remember, it takes 2+ hours after plants are watered before they absorb the water. THANK YOU! Now that the camellias are beginning to bloom, Don will be busy taking care of his own plants and getting ready for shows. As a consequence this will be his finial article for our newsletter. It is with deep gratitude that we have enjoyed Don s articles over the past few months. Good luck Don, we wish you all the best. If you have any questions regarding camellia care please let me know at the January 11th meeting or email me at patriciawarner3@gmail.com. I will attempt to research your questions with seasoned camellia growers and print the answers in our February newsletter. ANOTHER THANK YOU! Our thanks go to Nick Clark who managed our Web page for the last couple of years. Due to upkeep demands Board Members voted to drop the web page when our contract with Go Daddy, the internet domain we use was up. Go Daddy made a last minute half price offer in order to keep our business. It was too good of a deal to refuse so Barbara Bort and daughter Shelly went to work and updated the web page. Shelly has graciously agreed to maintain the website for now. According to Barbara and Shelly it is a work in progress, but it really looks great. Have a look at www.camelliasocietyofmodesto.org. Nick continues to play a MOST VALUED role with his computer skills. At our annual shows he creates the winning show cards on site. His job begins months ahead of show-time with the creation of a Merge file, not an easy task! Working with computers myself, I know how difficult both jobs are. Thank You Nick and Shelly!
