April 2019 CLUBHOUSE 507-451-6120 GOLF SHOP 507-451-1363 owatonnacc.com By Dan Jacott OCC General Manager This has been quite a winter to say the least. April seemed like it was never going to get here. Now it is and no doubt it is going to be a great year. The Shut Down of the club went terrific. The shortened shut down brought some challenges, but the staff did a fantastic job, and all of the cleaning was completed. It is amazing how much wear and tear happens to the Club over a year. It is really important to thoroughly clean the facility. It prolongs the buildings life and freshens it up for the upcoming season. Thank you for your patience during shut down. I would encourage you to stop by the Pro Shop to see all the new merchandise. AJ has also done a fantastic job setting up a nice TV Lounge area to enjoy watching golf while shopping or waiting for your tee time. We will have plenty of demo clubs to hit this year and the new merchandise looks great. Please make sure to check out all of the new 100-year Centennial merchandise and apparel. Speaking of the Centennial, I would like to thank all who have been a part of the Centennial planning Committee. It has been fun getting together and planning all the upcoming events throughout the year. We have 8 Fantastic Centennial Events planned for this year starting with the first on the original night the Club was formed, May 15. This will be a fun golf event and the flyer is included in this Tee Times. April, I hope you bring anything but showers this year, at least not at the beginning of the month. I m writing this article as the river is still on the rise from all the rain and snow melt we ve had in the middle of March this year. Although the upcoming week s forecast looks like spring is finally coming, it is not coming at a good time. I usually find myself writing about what we are expecting to get done on the course in the first couple weeks April. Unfortunately, I m not sure what to expect after the river recedes this time. I d be lying if I said I ve never seen the water this high. However, I haven t seen it this high in the spring, especially not when there is still ice on the river. We all know the power water can have, even though I try to forget every time the water comes up this high, I have flash backs of all the damage we had in 2010. This flood is different yet again, because the ground was still frozen when the water rose, I am hopeful we don t have many issues with the turf once the water recedes (at least I m keeping my fingers crossed at this point). One thing I am worried about is the bridges and irrigation system on those bridges. Usually when we flood in season, it is just water and potentially a log or two floats down river. Right now, we have all those same nuances, except we also have a lot more ice on the river because of how cold winter was. It is anyone s guess as to what the ice will do once it starts moving with the river. All our steel bridges on the course (11,15,17,18) are span bridges which means they are not supported in the water by pilings. Under most circumstances this would be a good thing because there isn t anything for logs or ice to hit. Because of the way the bridges are constructed, they sit on concrete abutments not anchored to land. The ice that needs to leave the property could really cause problems for these bridges. As of 3/18, the bridge going from 18 tee to the west bank of the river had already been shifted by the ice built up underneath. As you can see from my pictures, the main structure of the bridge has already moved about 2 with more water and ice coming. I don t want to speculate on any of the wood bridges, but once the water starts receding, we will be out monitoring them as soon as we can. Once we can get back out on the course, we will have our hands full cleaning up everything from the flood. We will try to finish up the tile project on 16 we started last fall. As well as leveling out and laying sod on the old cart path on #17. We ll continue to get gravel out to the new cart path we cut in closer to the river in hopes to minimize the bad bounces one gets when they miss the green by only 5 feet. The retaining wall on #2 collapsed during the rain we had back in December, but we need the frost out of the ground to start working on that project. I know I sound like a Debby Downer but when Mother Nature throws as many curves this early in the season, it seems like the work load is already piling up and all we can do is wait. Hope to see everyone on the course shortly after this article comes out.
