Div #3402 Entry Deadline: June 20 Delivery: July 20 (11a-5p) and July 21 (12p-2p) Judging: July 21, 2:30pm Department Notes: Please refer to The Arts Policies and Procedures and specific division notes for important information. Recipes not required. Cake themes must be family-friendly. Cakes must be structured to enable relocation within display area by creative arts staff for judging purposes. Any icing technique may be applied; however, plastics should be used sparingly only to complete a theme. Bases and supports are the responsibility of the contestant. Table space to complete assembly of tiered entries will be available at point of delivery. Entries may not exceed 30 in length or width (with the exception of wedding cakes). Entries must be the sole work of the person entering and must have been made within the current year. Entry tag must be attached securely to the base or a lower part of the entry. Division Notes Decorated Cakes: Read the descriptions of each section to determine your decorating skills and level in which to enter. There are three groupings of entries based on the experience of the contestant: Beginner/Youth, Intermediate and Advanced/Professional. Count your previous winnings. Three first places in one level or winning a Best of Show, graduates you to the next level up. Find your level, and then create your cake. Business cards and/or advertising are only permitted for Advanced/Professional entrants. Decorated cake entries may utilize forms and dummy cake, but the techniques exhibited must be reproducible with real cake and icing. Non-FDA approved luster dusts and paints not permitted. Decorated cakes should have an attractive foil-covered board or base that compliments the entry. A cake board or plate should be two inches larger than the base cake decorations. Example: an 8 cake should be placed on a 10 base unless otherwise state in competition information. Wedding cake tiers should be proportional to the base cake. A novelty cake is defined as a fun, amusing, odd-shaped, odd-colored, non-traditional cake. Also, a term used to describe specialty or custom cakes designed by contestants. Crazy Cakes (Div #3402 only) See page 32 for details. Fees There is a one-time $10 processing fee plus a $1 entry fee per item. o Fees are different for the Ohio Cake & Sweets Expo, Division #3402. See page 33 for details. Fees will not be refunded for cancelled/non-exhibiting entries. NEW in 2019. The Ohio Cake & Sweets Expo at the Ohio State Fair (Div #3402) is open to Ohio and non-ohio residents. Ohio contestants who enter the Ohio State Fair Cake Decorating Contest may also enter the OCS Show. Note differences in entry fees. See page 33 for details. Beginner and Youth Levels: contestant has less than two years decorating experience, was self-taught or has not taken more than two courses of cake decorating lessons. o Decorating techniques should be done with royal icing or butter cream. Intermediate Level: contestant is beyond beginner s skills, won four or more first place awards in beginner level at any previous cake competitions, has decorated more than two years and/or has had classes beyond basics. o Entrant must use at least three decorating techniques. Be creative with shapes and sizes. Any individual cake entry can only be entered in one division. Judging Guidelines: Overall Appearance (40%) Attractive, appropriate for occasion, artistically executed design, good proportion, balance, pleasing color selection And use, well-executed cake coverings. Appropriate, appealing and non-distracting entry bases or substrates are also a consideration. Techniques (35%) Difficulty of skills demonstrated, uniformity and precision of workmanship. Originality (25%) Creative, unique, clever adaptation of another idea (i.e. borders, flowers, writing, ruffles, icing, beads, gum paste, fondant, figure, piping, flow-in, etc.). Ohio Cake & Sweets Expo Div #3402 $6050+ Awards Offered Hosted by: Cakes by Timbo and High-Five Cakes Division Notes: Open to Ohio and Non-Ohio residents. Beginner Level: contestants have less than two years decorating experience, are self-taught or have not taken more than two courses of cake decorating lessons. o Decorating techniques should be done with royal icing or butter cream. Intermediate Level: contestants are beyond beginner s skills, won four or more first place awards in beginner level at any previous cake competitions, have decorated more than two years and/or have had classes beyond basics. o Entrants must use at least three decorating techniques. Advanced/Professional Level: contestants have decorated more than two years or taken at least three courses in cake decorating; those who use butter cream and royal icing comfortably, have worked with special techniques such as cocoa painting, sugar molding, marzipan, figure piping, gum paste, fondant or flow-in, and air brushing; those who taught on a small scale or won three first-place awards in an intermediate level in any previous cake competitions. o Contestants associated with a cake decorating business may provide a business name and information placed on a 5 x 7 sign that will be posted in front of their entry. All Levels: Be creative with shapes and sizes. Any individual cake entry can only be entered in one division. Judges have the right to move cakes to a different category or division as they see fit. Judges have the right to disqualify a cake if rules are not followed. Any presented sculpted cakes and/or figures can be made with an interior that is not real cake (ie: Styrofoam, Rice Krispy Treats, Modeling Chocolate) but you must print and present 3 in-progress phtos OR a blueprint/sketch to show judges what you made, can be remade with cake. The exterior of all cakes must be edible with the exception of pillars and floral wire. Any non-edible cake decor such as disco dust ribbon should be easily removable as it would be if you were making the cake for a client. The entry must be the work of the entrant ONLY and no pre-purchased flowers or toppers can be used. No table décor will be allowed. Electrical outlets are NOT available to any competitor. Cakes will be positioned in order of receipt; no positions on the display tables may be requested or reserved. All set-ups will stop promptly at 2pm on Sunday, July 21, 2019. At this time all competition participants will be escorted outside the exhibit hall display area. The creator of each entry must be present and participating in the set-up. Each competitor may enlist the aid of one assistant, and one assistant only. All entries will be judged by a team of qualified industry professionals. If contestant wishes to pick up cake(s) at the end of the Fair, pick up day is Monday, August 5 (10a-8p) ONLY. No one will be permitted to remove cakes before this day/time. Any cakes remaining after 8p on Monday, August 5, 2019 will be disposed of by Fair staff. The award presentation will take place on Sunday, July 21 at 7pm. in Kasich Hall.
