Vi was a professional seamstress working for many clothing stores as well as working out of her house. Most of her children s clothes were made by her. Vi and John loved to dance. They made many friends dancing. They square danced, ballroom danced and anything in between. They traveled all over the world and only missed one state in the US. Vi has her biggest smiles when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren come to visit her! We are glad that you are here and part of the Hiawatha Care Center family! HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY Written by Resident Columnist, Barbara Ashby The origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greeks and Romans. The earliest history of Mother's Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. Early Christians celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ. In England the holiday was expanded to include all mothers. The idea of the official celebration of Mother's Day in the United States was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe in 1872. Anna Jarvis is recognized as the Founder of Mother's Day in the United States. A growing negligent attitude of Americans towards their mothers soared her ambitions. The hard work paid off. By 1911, Mother s Day was celebrated in almost every state in the Union and on May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Today Mother's Day is celebrated in several countries including the United States, United Kingdom, India, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Mexico, Canada, Japan and Belgium. So Let's celebrate Mother's Day graciously at Hiawatha Care Center! Barbara Ashby Congratulations, Vi!

The World's Greatest Mother Mothers, you are the greatest of God's Creations. You are full of love, joy and inspiration. You have been given a task that is not easy to do, for the rest of my life I will honor you. You are very intellectual and very smart and when you love someone it comes from the heart. There isn't anything that I wouldn't do for my mother, for she will always take the place above all others. I will love my mother until her dying day. Thank you for loving me and showing me the way! May 2016 RESIDENT ARTIST OF THE MONTH IS: EVELYN STUDT STOP BY AND SEE THE PICTURE. IT IS ON DISPLAY FOR THE MONTH OUTSIDE THE DOOR OF THE ACTIVITY ROOM! CONGRATULATIONS!!! What is May Day all about? Written by Resident Columnist, Barbara Ashby May Day traditions include the crowning of a queen (and perhaps) a king to oversee the day s activities. Children and grown-ups would fill May baskets with candy and flowers and secretly take them to their neighbors porches. I remember when I was in the 8th grade we had a May pole down in our park. It was beautifully wrapped in bright colors. We girls went and danced around the pole for a long time. We were so happy. I have never forgotten this. People were told if they went outside early on May 1st and washed their face with dew, their skin would be more beautiful. Memorial Day Written by Resident Columnist, Barbara Ashby What Memorial Day to us today is thinking about the loss of our loved ones. We go to their gravesite and place beautiful flowers on their graves, thinking about how much we miss them. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who died in the service of the United States of America. While Waterloo, N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it s difficult to prove the origin of the day. Regardless of the exact date or location of its origin, one thing is clear Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. The 30th of May 1888 was designated for the purpose of decorating the graves of soldiers who died in defense of their country.
