November 2011 Newsletter A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT President s Report Our fall show was a great success with plenty of plants and ribbons. The success of our show would not have been possible without the support of our members. While it is difficult to name everyone who helped out, with a judged show, the most important activity is the registration of the plants and the coordination of the judges. Sue Charles (and Donna Lipowicz who helped her) made the judging possible through her work at registering all the plants and exhibits. It is a stressful and timeconsuming activity and earns our appreciation. Once the judging is completed, the show becomes much less stressful. The turnout was over 800 for the two days, despite the high wind conditions on Saturday. This made it our best-attended fall show ever! A heartfelt thank you to all who contributed to make this show a success. The financial report will be available in December. Our last meeting of 2011 will be the November meeting on Tuesday with signup for the Xmas party on December 6 th at the Protocol Restaurant. The menu and signup sheet will be in the November newsletter as well as at the meeting. 40 MEMBERS WERE IN ATTENDANCE N.F.O.S REGULAR MEETING OF OCTOBER 4, 2011 Meeting was brought to order by the President Joe DiDomenico at 6:40 PM Minutes of the meeting held on 9/13/11 were approved by the body as per newsletter. Treasurer Delphine Verdi reported a treasury bank balance of $7,753.28. Garden News None Old Business None New Business Sue Lach reminded us that NFOS ELECTIONS ARE UP AND COMING IN November and asking for nominations for all positions, and also at-large Member Positions. The main focus of today s meeting was on the Fall Flower Show coming up October 15 & 16. Emphasis was on Show Prep. Sign-up sheets for much needed help, and discuss the agenda for setup; the judging segment on Saturday, The Food Committee, Show Registration, Sales Table, Membership and above all to bring in all blooming orchids for either personal or NFOS table displays. We will need members to be good ambassadors to the visitors, to answer questions, and offer help in any manner possible. Judging of orchids will be held in the center dome. A Mum Show is slated for October 22, 2011 at the Gardens. A work party has also been scheduled for Oct 22, from 8:30 to approx noon to move cymbidiums to the cold room. Jim Pisarczyk did the show table of orchids brought in by NFOS Members. After the break, a slide show and talk was given by Tom and Shan Nasser with Carolina Orchids. The topic was Angraecoid orchids from Africa and Madagascar. Tom also had plants for sale. A board meeting will be held on Thursday November 3, 2011 at the DiDomenicos home at 7:00 pm. All society members are welcome to attend. Hydroponics of Buffalo will be a new vendor at the Orchid Show this year. Meeting ended at approximately 9:15 PM. < < < < <~ ~ ~ ~ ~ > > > > > Help us out If you received this newsletter by US Postal Mail, that means we don t have an email address for you.
