Volume 3, No. 35 September 24, 1999 In This Issue: Drought Conditions Persist as of Sept. 18th Fire Blight Resistance Changes in Consumption Trends Degree Day Accumulations Terminal Market Wholesale Fruit Prices Drought Conditions in Ohio as of Sept. 18th Region Category of Drought NW Ohio Severe WCentral Ohio Extreme SW Ohio Extreme SCentral Ohio Severe Central Ohio Extreme NCentral Ohio Severe NE Ohio Severe Central Hills Severe NE Hills Severe SE Ohio Extreme Source: http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/regional_monitoring/palmer.gif Fire Blight Resistance Source: Illinois Fruit & Vegetable News, Sept. 17, 1999 When establishing new orchards, consider varietal susceptibility to fire blight. No apple variety has been reported to be immune to infection, but the varieties vary in resistance. Particularly susceptible apple cultivars include Braeburn, Earligold, Fuji, Fenton (Beacon), Gala, Ginger Gold, Granny Smith, Ida Red, Jonagold, Jonathan, Lodi, Mutsu (Crispin), Nittany, Paulared, Puritan, Red Yorking, Rhode Island Greening, Rome, Sir Prize, Twenty Ounce, Wealthy, Yellow Transparent, and many crab apple

varieties. Delicious, Golden delicious, McIntosh, and Stayman may develop spur infections, but the disease seldom enters the main branches. Several scab-resistant apple cultivars are moderately resistant to fire blight as well. These include Enterprise, Goldrush, Jonafree, Liberty, Macfree, Prima, Priscilla, and Williams Pride. M.26 and M.9 rootstocks are susceptible to fire blight, so fire blight-susceptible varieties should not be planted on these rootstocks. Changes in Consumption Trends Source: Illinois Fruit & Vegetable News, Sept. 17, 1999 Following are some interesting facts on changes in the American diet between 1970 and 1996.
