Highly Rated Bordeaux Gerard Perse What more can we say about Gérard Perse that has not already been said in the winepress? Reviews are unvaryingly positive, praising his unprecedented success. It is indeed rare for wine writers to agree to such an extent No one else in Bordeaux has ever achieved such recognition in so little time. What else can we say other than that these wines have all the hallmarks of excellence: color, texture, strength, finesse, and complexity. They are also very much to the taste of people who like classic Bordeaux. One is tempted to ask the following question Might we not be talking about quintessiential claret, benchmark wines epitomising everything a great Bordeaux should be? Has Gérard Perse discovered the Holy Grail - or has he simply set a new standard? Chateau Pavie 2006 Ch. Pavie (Futures) 319.99 2005 Ch. Pavie (Futures) 339.99 Rated 98/100, Wine Advocate 2004 Ch. Pesquera Some have dubbed this rich concentrated wine the Chateau Petrus of Spain. The Wine 2004 Pesquera Alejandro Fernandéz, proprietor The 2004 Tinto Pesquera (Crianza), from a great vintage, is opaque purple with a fragrant nose of lead pencil, earth, black currants, and blackberry liqueur that jumps from the glass. This is followed by a sexy wine with layered blue and black fruits intertwined with ripe tannins and good acidity. This superb, beautifully balanced effort should evolve for 4-6 years and drink well for another 10-15. Wine Advocate, rated 93/100 Deep ruby. Ripe blackberry and plum on the nose, with an almost roasted quality. Then bright, sweet and fresh on the palate, with vibrant blackberry and cassis flavors, notes of minerals and licorice and a silky texture. For such depth and power of flavor there s striking purity and finesse. Sweet, energetic and persistent on the finish, with an endless procession of fresh dark berry flavors. A wonderful vintage for this wine. 2007 Fall Releases PinOt noir 2005 Pinot Noir Allen Vineyard 119.99 Bright Maraschino cherries, strawberries, rose petal, ginger, violets and root beer aromas. Concentrated raspberry and strawberry jam flavors end up lush and sweet in the mouth. The fruity finish is complemented by a toasty vanilla/ crème brulee-like texture explosion in your mouth, along with creamy textured tannins that finish long across your palate. 2005 Pinot Bucher Vineyard 79.99 Lively aromas of Bing cherries, violets, root beer and tarragon come through in the nose. A mouthful of pie cherries, raspberry, cola, herbal spices and earth is complemented by the richness of grape and toasty oak tannin in the finish. The complexity of this wine continues to show through as these vines become more and more mature. 2005 Pinot Noir Ferrington Vineyard 89.99 Mocha and ripe wild cherries stand out in the nose of this concentrated wine. Racy cherry-cola flavors and rich fat tannins fill your mouth, along with truffles in the finish. The newer clonal plantings from this ranch are finally maturing and are now adding an immense amount of depth and complexity to this wine. 2005 Pinot Noir Flax Vineyard 79.99 Blackberry, wild boysenberry, plum, sassafras and shitake mushroom aromas come to life in the glass. The rich and broad tannins accentuate the focus of berry and exotic spicy flavors across your palate. Young, yet sophisticated and sexy. Extremely cellar worthy. 2005 Pinot Noir Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard 109.99 Inviting aromas of ripe wild blackberries, Rainier cherries, root beer, and Morel mushrooms permeate the nose. Sweet and concentrated flavors of ripe cherries, earth, spice and sassafras accentuate the ripe, lush tannins on your palate. The concentration of fruit and toasty oak complement the long lingering finish in your mouth. The Riverblock vineyard has truly entered its prime. 2005 Pinot Noir Vista Verde Vineyard 79.99 Another excellent vintage from our vineyards in the Central Coast. The ripe aromas of cherry, raspberry, green tea, mocha and spice dominate the nose. This wine shows richer and broader tannins than the 2004 version, with a better overall concentration and depth of fruit. A long sweet cherry and silky oak finish complete this wine. Needs time to mature in the bottle. 2005 Pinot Noir Weir Vineyard 84.99 The aromas of wild cherries, blackberries, forest floor, Asian spices and minerals dominate the nose completely in this wine. Concentrated flavors of cherry, blackberry, and cardamom are complemented by the rich grape and toasty oak tannin in the finish. The sweetness in the finish makes this a much more complex wine than past vintages. CHaRDOnnay 2005 Chardonnay Allen Vineyard 79.99 Characteristic Russian River Valley aromas of apples, pears, lichee, butterscotch and marshmallows only add to the complexity of these flavors in your mouth. Rich and full of classic Allen flavors that finish long and intricate. 2005 Chardonnay Heintz Vineyard 79.99 Enticing aromas of apple cobbler, pears, star jasmine and roasted marshmallows float up from your glass. The rich, fat leesy mouth-feel is complemented by the concentration of fruit and a balanced acidity. Soft tannins finish long with a toasty bread/lemon drop component. 2005 Chardonnay Hawk Hill Vineyard 79.99 Roasted nuts, mocha and citrus blossom dominate the aromas in this wine. The extended barrel aging has made the mouth-feel creamy and lush with a toffee element. The naturally high acidity gives this wine a long Meyer lemon and wet stone/mineral flavor in the finish. A wine that definitely benefits from several years of cellaring. zinfandel 2005 Zinfandel Forchini Vineyard 74.99 Extremely concentrated flavors of raspberry, cassis, mocha and sassafras explode in your mouth. The aromas are similar, but with a high-toned perfumed edge to them. Big rich mouth-coating tannins give way to a long jammy finish. Like all of their zinfandels, this wine was aged in three-and four-year-old Francois Freres barrels. k Cellar Selections k 2004 Pinot Noir (Allen Vineyard) 119.99 2004 Pinot Noir (Bucher Vineyard) 74.99 2003 Pinot Noir (Bucher Vineyard) 79.99 2002 Pinot Noir (Central Coast) 49.99 2001 Pinot Noir (Central Coast) 44.99 2004 Pinot Noir (Coastlands Vineyard) 99.99 2004 Pinot Noir (Ferrington Vineyard) 89.99 2004 Pinot Noir (Ferrington Vineyard) mag. 179.99 2003 Pinot Noir (Ferrington Vineyard) 89.99 2000 Pinot Noir (Ferrington Vineyard) 84.99 2000 Pinot Noir (Hirsch Vineyard) 89.99 2001 Pinot Noir (Mendocino) 54.99 2004 Pinot Noir (Rochioli Riverblock) 99.99 2005 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley) 64.99 2004 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley) 64.99 2005 Pinot Noir (Sonoma County) 49.99 2004 Pinot Noir (Sonoma County) 49.99 2005 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) 59.99 2004 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) 59.99 2003 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) 59.99 2004 Pinot Noir (Vista Verde Vineyard) 74.99 2003 Pinot Noir (Vista Verde Vineyard) 79.99 2002 Pinot Noir (Vista Verde Vineyard) 69.99 2001 Pinot Noir (Vista Verde Vineyard) 69.99 2001 Pinot Noir (Vista Verde Vineyard) mag. 139.99 2004 Pinot Noir (Weir Vineyard) 79.99 2003 Pinot Noir (Weir Vineyard) 79.99 2001 Pinot Noir (Weir Vineyard) mag. 139.99 2000 Pinot Noir (Weir Vineyard) 69.99 2005 Pinot Noir (Westside Road Neighbors) 89.99 2004 Pinot Noir (Westside Road Neighbors) 89.99 info@brownderby.com www.brownderby.com PG. 5

Aile d Argent Ch Mouton Rothschild s White Wine The 10-acre Aile d Argent vineyard, situated on the Château Mouton Rothschild estate, consists of three separate parcels characterized by sandy, gravelly soil. The mix of classic Bordeaux grape varieties is adapted to the characteristics of each parcel. Semillon accounts for 47% of the total, Sauvignon Blanc for 51% and Muscadelle for 2%. The average age of the vines is 13 years, and the vineyard density is 8500 vines per hectare. Traditional methods are used to cultivate the vines and the vineyard is grassed. Harvested by hand, the grapes are sorted on the vine and collected in small open baskets, as for Château Mouton Rothschild. Depending on the vintage and the grape variety, the grapes are either pressed directly into a vertical press (60%) or macerated on their sides prior to pressing and fermentation (40%). This allows the chosen grapes to fully express their aromatic potential. The must is chilled to between 8 and 10 C and slowly begins to ferment in stainless steel vats where the temperature is kept constantly below 18 C. When half-fermented, the Semillon and Sauvignon musts are transferred to oak barrels (50% new, 50% one year old). Fermentation continues, and may last for several weeks. The maturing process then begins. The wine is left on fine lees to nourish it and give it roundness, length and complexity. After the different varieties have been blended, the wine is bottled during the autumn following the harvest. Annual production is approximately 10,000 bottles. Aile d Argent is made with a view to ageing and will keep for 5 to 10 years, or 10-15 years for the best vintages. 2004 Aile d Argent 69.99 2003 Aile d Argent 69.99 1997 Aile d Argent 49.99 1995 Aile d Argent 49.99 PG. 6 Phone 1-800-491-3438 Local 417-883-4066 FAX 417-881-0036

Gaja Angelo & Lucia Gaja Italy s most fascinating and revolutionary winemaker. Robert Parker Angelo Gaja makes the most exciting wines in Italy. He has few equals in terms of his sheer determination and dedication to great winemaking. Wine Spectator Understand the man and you will understand the wines. Behind the exuberance, behind the dominating personality, behind the Latin passion, behind the skilled manipulation of the domestic and export market and the media there is a poet and a philosopher, a man of sensitivity and taste, a thinker and a perfectionist. And behind the wines, underneath the still atypical cleanliness and vibrant expression of Nebbiolo fruit, in addition to the oakiness and the concentration, is the element that sets Gaja wines above the rest; breed. You can see it in the Chardonnay; you can see it in the Barbera. Above all you can see it in the single-vineyard Barbaresco. This is triumphant, artistocratic Nebbiolo. Wine of great individuality - and wine which for all its modernity has not lost its soul. Superb Syrah Ron junge, Kerry Murphy, owner; Andy Smith, winemaker & Brad Feuerbacher Sashi Moorman, winemaker & co-proprietor of Piedrasassi; Winemaker of Stolpman Joey tensley, proprietor & winemaker of Tensley DuMol 2005 Syrah Russian River 54.99 Aromas of black fruits, tapenade, ground pepper, and spice box emerge from the 2005 Syrah Russian River (1,400 cases). There is some herbaceousness underneath the fruit, but the wine is full-bodied, rich, complex, and comes across like a Crozes-Hermitage on steroids. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. Wine Advocate, rated 90-93/100 Piedrasassi 2004 Syrah 49.99 Made by Sashi Moorman, the winemaker at Stolpman Vineyards, this 100% Syrah emerges from the limestone-based Harrison/Clark Vineyard. Fermented in Taransaud barrels and bottled with no fining or filtration, the 2004 Syrah is a deep, rich wine offering loads of smoky blackberry and cassis fruit as well as hints of creosote, tar, and incense. This heady, opulent 2004 can be drunk young or cellared for 7-8 years. Wine Advocate, rated 92/100 Stolpman 2004 Angeli 59.99 Rated 95/100, Wine Advocate 2005 Syrah Estate 29.99 97 % Syrah, 3% Grenache The Estate Syrah is the flagship wine produced by Stolpman Vineyards, representing nearly 40% of the winery s production. It showcases their unyielding commitment to producing the finest wine, even on a somewhat larger scale. Sustainably farmed vineyards, carefully hand harvested fruit and thoughtful winemaking are the blueprint, that they follow every season. This precedent allows them the opportunity to generate a finished wine of texture, length and purity. 2500 cases produced. Rated 93/100, Wine Advocate 2005 Syrah Hilltops Estate 39.99 Opulent, rich, with terrific fruit, impressive glycerin, and a heady, spicy finish with no hard edges, it is a brilliant, seamlessly constructed wine to drink over the next 7-8 years. Wine Advocate, rated 93/100 Tensley 2006 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard 39.99 2006 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard mag. 84.99 2006 Syrah Three Creek Vineyard 39.99 Tensley continues to be one of California s most reliable producers of high quality Syrahs from Santa Barbara formerly a serious soccer player who played for an American team while living in Bordeaux, is a self-taught winemaker. During his time in France, he was motivated to spend time in local vineyards, and upon his return to the States, at age 21 he began working at the Fess Parker Winery. His philosophy embraces basic artisinal winemaking techniques, including hand-harvested fruit, fermentation in small one and a half ton fermentors, punching down, some cluster usage depending on the vintage conditions, and little racking or intervention until the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered I tasted through a number of the 2006 vineyard cuvées, and they all looked slightly lighter, but very fruit-forward. They will probably be more charming in their youth, without the weight, density, and structure of the 2005 s. Wine Advocate PG. 8 Phone 1-800-491-3438 Local 417-883-4066 FAX 417-881-0036

2005 Burgundy The quality of the 2005 vintage for red Burgundy is stupendous. It is simply the best young vintage I have tasted in my 17 years working in the wine business. While the wines are still resting in bottle or barrel in Burgundy cellars, I urge you to place your pre-arrival orders with fine-wine retailers to claim a share of this treasure trove. 2005 Nicolas Rossignol Nicolas Rossignol Unprepared for the enormity of his range of Pinots (eight Volnays, four wines each from Beaune and Pommard, plus myriad other appellations) and their multiple locations, I was regrettably unable to taste all of the 2005s from this domaine. But based on the consistent excellence of what I sampled - not to mention prices well below those commanded by Volnay s most celebrated vignerons - consumers should hasten to claim whatever they can from this vintage, which Rossignol characterizes as complete, combining the richness of 1999 with the finesse of 2002. Wine Advocate 2005 Beaune 39.99 From near the Epenotes cru comes a rarity in Burgundy, namely a mere village 2005 Beaune. A lovely deep, black-edged color reflects these old vines and their nutty, stony meaty, black-fruited flavor concentration. Blackberry, beet root, toasted walnut, and tobacco feature prominently on a silken, expansive and impressively dense palate, which this wine stains thoroughly while displaying just a bit of post-bottling tightness in its finish. Wine Advocate, rated 90+/100 2005 Bourgogne Rouge 22.99 2005 Savigny Les Beaune Fourneaux 49.99 Vinified with around a third whole clusters, the 2005 Savigny-les-Beaune Les Fourneaux smells of cooked blackberry and raspberry with overtones of underbrush and smoke. Rich and substantial in the mouth, it finishes with generous fruit but firm tannins, accentuated by its recent sulfuring and bottling. Wine Advocate, rated 90+/100 2005 Volnay 49.99 From young, clonally-diverse vines in la Bouchere a very chalky, rocky site high above the village Rossignol s 2005 Volnay is loaded with deep, dark black cherry fruit, cherry pits, salty, chalky, iodine- and iron-like minerality. Incipiently velvety in the mouth, it promises to blossom with 3-5 years in the bottle, which it seems not at all disturbed by having just been put into. Here is the spirit of Volnay in a great vintage at a modest price: run, don t walk! Wine Advocate, rated 92/100 2005 Volnay Chevret 64.99 From a deeper site just below Caillerets and north of the Santenots du Milieu, a 2005 Volnay Chevret offers generous ripe blackberry, a simple, salty mineral expression, and a compelling richness and sheer fruit intensity. Dark forest floor notes are only hinted at, although this is almost certain to offer more complexity after allowing it 5-7 years to shut down and recover. Wine Advocate, rated 92/100 2005 Volnay Santenots 64.99 2005 Volnay Caillerets mag. 129.99 From 20 and 50 year-old vines (the younger touching d Angerville s parcel and the older the 60 Ouvrees) Rossignol s 2005 Volnay Caillerets largely leaves behind fruits and berries for a tour of stony terroir on the back of a wild animal. Iodine, chalk and cherry pit pungency and bitterness, invigorating saltiness, tart hints of red currant, fascinating florality, and gaminess make for a complex young Pinot, dense and full of fine tannin yet already hinting at creaminess. The length and multifarious mineral dimension harbor grand cru pretensions, and I would not hesitate to hide bottles away for 8-10 years. Wine Advocate, rated 94/100 info@brownderby.com www.brownderby.com PG. 15

Grower Champagne small in size, Big in Character Delve into the niche world of grower Champagnes and you ll find great value and a fascinating range of styles. L. aubry fils Twins Pierre and Philippe Aubry carry on a family tradition of vine growing that dates back to 1790. Their 40-acre estate in the village of Jouy-lès-Reims includes 60 parcels in five communes just southwest of Reims. In addition to the three common grapes of Champagne, they also grow forgotten varieties such as arbanne, petit meslier and fromenteau. The Aubrys seek to ally tradition with quality and creativity. Their wines are some of the most original in Champagne, bold in flavor and individual in character. N/V Brut 47.99 2000 Aubry de Humbert 64.99 1998 Aubry de Humbert 64.99 H. BiLLiOt fils Serge Billiot, son of Henri, manages this 12-acre estate in the grand cru village of Ambonnay. Billiot s wines show the expansively ripe and succulent redfruit flavors typical of Ambonnay, yet they are also unusually elegant for the cru. He uses very little dosage and doesn t filter his wines, nor does he allow them to undergo malolactic. N/V Brut 54.99 N/V Brut Rosé 64.99 N/V Cuvée Laetitia 89.99 CHaRLes ellner Charles Emile Ellner, the founder of the House, began his career in champagne making as a professional riddler. Slowly he began acquiring small vineyards in Epernay and cultivating his own adventure in champagne. In addition to the work of cultivating his vines, his independent nature and his passion for wine led him to vinify, blend, and sell his wines to a private clientele. Charles Emile was admirably assisted by his only son, Pierre, whose energy and foresight helped the house make vinegrowing and winemaking advance. The house is still a family business and each heir responsible for a specific sector corresponding to his own particular interests and professional ability such as oenology, administration or management of the vineyards. N/V Rosé Brut 37.99 50% Pinot Noir, 50% Pinot Meunier - The rose is blended from estate-grown fruit matured in vineyards whose average vine-age is 30 years. 1998 Prestige Brut 49.99 70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir - The Chardonnay of this signature cuvee is aged in traditional wood barrels, the Pinot Noir in stainless steel vats. The two components are combined in the bottle. 1998 Cuvee Seduction Brut 49.99 70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir - This vintage release is aged in oak and does not undergo malolactic fermentation. CHaRtOGne-taiLLet Philippe Chartogne s ancestors farmed vines in the village of Merfy in the 16th century. Today Philippe and his wife, Elisabeth, run this 27-acre estate northwest of Reims. The wines are rich and broadly mouthfilling, reflecting the sandstone and clay soils typical of this area of Champagne. Yields are kept low; the wines stand out for concentration and depth of fruit. N/V Cuvée St. Anne 47.99 N/V Blanc de Blancs 54.99 1999 Millésime Brut 62.99 DieBOLt-vaLLOis Jacques Diebolt has been at the helm of this estate since 1959. His wife, Nadia, is daughter of the Vallois winegrowing family in Cramant. The majority of Diebolt s vines lie in the grand cru village of Cramant, with additional vineyards in Chouilly and Cuis. These are pure, chalky wines of great finesse and detail. The Fleur de Passion and Prestige cuvées are exclusively from vines in Cramant, and show the richly complex depth and sleek structure of this top grand cru. 2002 Blanc de Blancs 59.99 2002 Blanc de Blancs mag. 129.99 N/V Blanc de Blancs 39.99 N/V Blanc de Blancs mag. 84.99 N/V Blanc de Blancs Cuvee Prestige 49.99 N/V Brut Cuvée Tradition 34.99 Rated 90/100, Wine Spectator 1999 Fleur de Passion 74.99 GastOn CHiquet Nicolas Chiquet planted vines in the commune of Dizy in 1746, and in 1919 the brothers Fernand and Gaston Chiquet began to sell estate-bottled Champagne. Today the estate is again in the hands of two brothers, Nicolas and Antoine, who farm 54 acres of vines along the Marne River. The Chiquets like meunier, and 40 percent of the vineyards are planted with it. Another 40 percent is Chardonnay and 20 percent Pinot Noir, with holdings in the communes of Aÿ, Mareuil-sur Aÿ, Haut-villers, Cumières and Dizy. These wines reflect the bold, fruity character of Marne Valley terroir. The Brut Tradition is 50 percent Meunier, and always shows typical aromas of this variety. Francois Peters, proprietor of Pierre Peters Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy, proprietor of René Geoffroy Gaston Chiquet, proprietor of Gaston Chiquet serge Billiot, proprietor of H. Billiot Fils Jean Lallement Jean-Luc Lallement makes only three wines, one of which-the rosé- he just inaugurated last year (he releases only about 1,700 cases annually). Most of this Montagne de Reims estate is in Verzenay, with the rest in Verzy; 80 percent of the vines are Pinot Noir, 20 percent Chardonnay. Lallement keeps the dosage low, usually at extra brut levels; his wines are rich and minerally, combining strength and finesse. N/V Brut 54.99 Jean Milan The first Champagne bottle to bear the Milan name was produced in 1864 by Charles Milan. Today, Caroline and Jean-Charles Milan are the fifth generation to manage the family s 15 acres in the grand cru Oger. Milan s wines are classic Oger in profile, with the flowery delicacy of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay but not he austerity of Le Mesnil. At their best, the are as charming as Chardonnay gets. 2002 Selection Terres de Noël Brut 99.99 N/V Charles de la Milaniere Rosé 62.99 Marc Hébrart Marc Hébrart founded this estate in 1962, and his son, Jean-Paul, took over in 1997. He farms 32 acres -in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Aÿ in the Vallée de la Marne, and in Chouilly and Oiry in the Côte des Blancs. Most of the vineyards are Pinot Noir (70 percent); the balance is Chardonnay. These are rich wines that emphasize place over fruit, showing their origins with precise detail. Try them if you want to become familiar with the terroir around Mareuil-sur Aÿ and Aÿ. N/V Cuvée Réserve Brut half 29.99 N/V Selection Brut 49.99 A. Margaine Gaston Margaine founded this 16-acre estate in Villers- Marmery early in the 20th century, today run by his great-grandsons, Bernard and Arnaud Margaine. The premier cru commune of Villers-Marmery is unusual in the Montagne de Reims, as it is dominated by Chardonnay rather than Pinot Noir. Margaine s vineyards are 90 percent Chardonnay and 10 percent Pinot, all in Villers-Marmery. Chardonnay gives their wines elegance and finesse, but the soil signature is completely different from the Côte des Blancs, with an earthier, fuller-bodied richness. N/V Cuvée Traditionelle 39.99 N/V Cuvée Traditionelle half 24.99 N/V Rosé 49.99 Pierre Gimonnet There have been Gimonnets growing vines in Cuis since 1750. Pierre Gimonnet began bottling estate wines in the 1930s, and today Olivier and Didier Gimonnet, Pierre s grandsons, carry on the family tradition. Their 64 acres of vines are all planted to Chardonnay, in the communes of Cuis, Cramant and Chouilly; 70 percent of the vines are older than 35 years, with the oldest vines more than 80 years old. Gimmonet wines are refined, chalky and intense, balancing the rich complexity of the grands crus Cramant and Chouilly with the racy austerity of the premier cru Cuis. Old-vine depth and concentration is often evident in these wines. 2002 Cuvée Gastonome 54.99 N/V 1er Cru Brut 49.99 N/V 1er Cru Brut half 29.99 1999 Special Club 69.99 Pierre Peters The Peters family had been growers in Champagne for more than a century when Pierre Peters founded this house in 1940. François Peters now heads this 43-acre estate, regarded as one of the best in Le Mesnil. The most significant holdings-30 acres-are in the grand cru of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The rest are spread around Oger, Avize, Cramant and Vertus. The wines are sleek and racy, emphasizing finesse over body. They always undergo malolactic but never taste like it. If you can find the Cuvée Spéciale, it s made from a single plot of 70-year old vines in Le Mesnil. N/V Cuvee de Reserve Brut 54.99 1999 Cuvee Speciale Brut 84.99 René Geoffroy N/V Expression 44.99 N/V Empreinte 54.99 Vilmart & Cie. Vilmart s wines have been called poor man s Krug for their combination of power and style-at half the cost of real Krug. Food & Wine Based in Rilly-la-Montagne de Reims, Champagne Vilmart was founded by Désiré Vilmart in 1890. His grandson, Renan Vilmart, took over the company in 1930 and later handed it over to his son-in-law, René Champs, in 1962. Since 1990 René s son, Laurent, has been in charge of the estate. He farms 27 acres with organic methods; 60 percent of the vines are Chardonnay, 40 percent Pinot Noir. Vilmart s wines are rich and complex, with a depth and resonance unusual in Champagne. All are fermented in wood, either in large oak casks or in small barrels; Champ s careful attention to viticulture produces wines of concentration and vinosity. The new oak (35%) is integrating nicely giving the wine hints of tobacco and cassis. The fruit is deep, dark and dense with aromas of crushed blackberries and hints of pomegranate. The mouth is also big sweet and full of ripe plums, a hint of licorice and a round rich mocha finish. The 2005 is surprisingly dark fruited with some black tea notes. Domaine des Baumard Florent Baumard is a brilliant winemaker. If he had been born a Californian, Burgundian, or Bordelais, wealthy vineyard owners would be standing in line to employ his services as a consultant. Moreover, consumers would be begging retailers for increased allocations of his wines. A young, handsome, ever-smiling sort, Baumard quietly fashions some of the world s most complex dry and sweet wines in the sleepy village of Rochefort-sur-Loir. Wine Advocate Florent Baumard is one of the world s best winemakers, and you probably don t know him. That s because he produces Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley, an alltoo-often overlooked region. Perhaps that will change following his most recent performance, in the exceptional 2005 vintage. Wine Spectator 2005 Quarts de Chaume 69.99 Rated 92/100, Wine Advocate A jaw-dropper, with orange blossom, persimmon, fig and quince flavors that remain remarkably bright and light thanks to riveting acidity and a superfine, minerally finish. Pure and perfectly balanced, it refuses to break down in the mouth. The best since the monster 1995. Wine Spectator, rated 98/100 From arguably the finest sweet wine vineyard in the Loire, here is a wine that is deceptively fresh on first taste. Then the huge richness kicks in, balanced with blood oranges, white fig and pear flavors, and a mineral character. Complex, this needs many years to develop; superb. Wine Enthusiast, rated 95/100 2005 Coteaux du Layon Clos Ste. Catherine 49.99 Rated 91/100, Wine Advocate Rich and ripe, with glazed fruit, apple tartine and fig paste notes backed by rich texture and a long, creamy finish, where lingering fig and green almond notes keep pulling you back. Combines power and k New Arrivals k precision. 600 cases made. Wine Spectator, rated 96/100 Clos de Sainte-Catherine is at the summit of the sweet wines of Coteaux du Layon. This comes from a great year for sweet wines, and that shows in the impressive balance between intense sweetness and acidity. It s smooth and crisp at the same time, a great combination. Age for 10 years and more. Wine Enthusiast, rated 95/100 2005 Coteaux de Layon Cuvée Le Paon 29.99 Rated 90/100, Wine Advocate Really enticing, with quince, pear, persimmon and fig aromas and flavors, but it s never heavy, just pure and refined with a lovely, caressing finish. The acidity is really buried here should cruise in the cellar. Drink now through 2027. 1000 cases made. Wine Spectator rated 95/100 Peacock (paon) cuvée is a deliciously showy wine, powered with intense sweetness, almost syrup. The counterbalance to all this sweetness is the pear, apricot and citrus elements, which go with the dry layer of botrytis to leave a wine that it has a crisp, fresh aftertaste. Wine Enthusiast, rated 93/100 k Cellar Selections k 2004 Coteaux du Layon Carte d Or 19.99 Lots of mineral and candied lime hold the fig and glazed pear flavors at bay. Long, stony finish. Drink now through 2012. 580 cases made. Wine Spectator, rated 93/100 The wines from this renowned single vineyard always show well young. The 2004 has a forward, apricot sweetness backed by herbal and nutty notes that race through the palate in subtle, quiet length, the mineral aromas lasting long after the fruit flavors are gone. Wine & Spirits, rated 90/100 2004 Quarts de Chaume 59.99 Rated 95/100, Wine Advocate Ripe and stylish, with fig, pear tartine and green plum flavors gliding across a lovely, creamy palate. Its accessibility belies the vibrant minerality on the finish for now, but this should be cellared a bit. Best from 2008 through 2015. 1,415 cases made. Wine Spectator, rated 94/100 Baumard s Quarts de Chaume continues to be a reference point for the appellation. This demonstrates a striking purity, seeming to derive more intensity from concentration of fruit rather than botrytis. The prominent schiste character anchors the apricot and mandarin orange flavors through a long and palate staining finish. With extended aeration it appears to gain in focus and freshness, a trait that is surprising in the generally heavy and super-ripe 1997 vintage. Caramelized minerals and honeyed aromas are exuded by this dense, oily, jammy wine. On the palate, marzipan, candied grapefruit, and tropical fruits can be detected within its viscous, yet fresh, core. This massive offering will require some cellaring before reaching its peak. Drink it between 2003 and 2020. Wine Advocate, rated 94/100 Rich and soft. A puzzling, almost musty aroma gives way to more lush and appealing flavors of vanilla, spice, candied lemon, marzipan and honey. Palmina from the proprietors of Brewer Clifton Palmina Wines tastes like fine italian Cuvées. Wine Advocate steve clifton chrystal clifton If only all Pinot Grigios were so delicious. Wine Spectator Palmina (is) made by Steve Clifton, part of the brilliant duo of Brewer-Clifton. He has worked in Italy, studying the finest producers in the northeast sector of that country, and stands alone in California as being able to translate the fragile yet ethereal character of Nebbiolo and Sangiovese, not to mention some brilliant stainless steel fermented aged whites, into wines of considerable class and interest. Why Clifton has been able to achieve such success while others have failed is another story altogether, but his wines merit significant attention At present, Palmina is the only reference point for what can be achieved in California with Italian varietals, hats off to Steve Clifton! Robert Parker The finest Italian varietal dry whites in the country are made by Steve Clifton under the Palmina label. It is amazing what he is able to achieve with these varietals, and if readers haven t tasted them, it is wellworth getting on the winery s mailing list as they are all crisp, stainless steel-fermented and aged dry whites that rank alongside the best from northeast Italy. Wine Advocate, rated 89/100 2005 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Innisfree (California) 24.99 Due to a vintage distinctive for its rich, ripe fruit, the 2005 Innisfree Cabernet Sauvignon boasts concentrated aromas of spice and black cherry, followed by a rich, smooth texture and velvety tannins. The wine finishes with excellent structure and balance. Brown Derby Staff, rated 91/100 2005 Tamarack Cellars Firehouse Red (Washington State) 17.99 Tamarack Cellars winery is located by the Walla Walla airport on a former military base. It offers some of the best red wine values among all the Washington wines in my tastings. The portfolio begins with the 2005 Firehouse Red, a blend of 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah, 24% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, with the balance Sangiovese, Carmenère, and Malbec. Dark ruby-colored with a nose bordering on exotic, the wine offers ripe, sweet fruit, complex flavors, and a stylish elegance, all at a very nice price. Drink this tasty wine over the next 8-10 years. Wine Advocate, rated 90/100 2006 Tensley Blanc Camp 4 Vineyard (California) 22.99 Tensley continues to be one of California s most reliable producers of high quality Syrahs from Santa Barbara. Additionally, Joey Tensley is demonstrating a nice touch with his white wine production. His beautiful 2006 Blanc Camp 4 Vineyard, a co-fermented blend of 60% white Grenache and 40% Roussanne, exhibits aromas of white peaches, citrus oil, and honeysuckle, medium body, loads of fruit, a hint of minerality, and surprising complexity. This flamboyant wine could easily pass for a top-notch white southern Rhone. Wine Advocate, rated 90/100 2006 Varner Chardonnay Fox Glove (California) 14.99 This is one of the most impressive wineries situated in the cool, high elevations of the Santa Cruz Mountains The one non-santa Cruz Mountain Chardonnay is one of the great values in Chardonnay from California today. The 18,000 cases of 2006 Fox Glove Chardonnay should not last long in the marketplace. All tank-fermented and lee-stirred with no malolactic, this is outrageously delicious Chardonnay showing plenty of white currant, pineapple, and tangerine skin notes, with gorgeous fruit purity, medium body, crisp acidity, and oodles of naked varietal fruit that is surprisingly complex and rich with great zestiness. Opus One Showing, a lustrous dark ruby, the 2004 presents aromas of violets, cedar, black tea leaves, black pepper and brioche. A soft, creamy entry gives way to a concentrated mid-palate that expands in the mouth and lingers on the finish. Elements of cassis, toffee and cocoa round out the rich flavors of the wine. Intense fruit, bright acid and sturdy tannins promise resilience and longevity. The 2004 Opus One is composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec. Excellent structure, tannins and acidity, with sturdy currant, blackberry, fresh earth, mineral and a whiff of tar and tobacco. A remarkably complex and impeccably balanced young wine that flexes its tannic muscle on the finish. Wine Spectator, rated 92-94/100 $ 159 99 2004 Opus One This very sexy and showy wine, rated 91 in Issue 118, merited 92 in March. There are between 200-500 cases of the following seven single vineyard cuvées that all go into the Private Reserve bottling, and all of them are showing better this year than they did in 2003 One of my favorites, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena Home Vineyard (rated 95/100) is a classic example of Cabernet Sauvignon s Créme de cassis side. With a terrific texture, wonderful opulence, and a long, full-bodied finish, it will be a 20-year wine. The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Steinhauer Vineyard (rated 93/100) is another big, full bodied, heady effort. Wine Advocate 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena Home Vineyard 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Steinhauer Vineyard $ 99 99 per bottle The following single-vineyard wines, which are only available at the winery, emerge from the component parts utilized in the Private Reserve blend. My favorite of the component parts is the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena Home Vineyard (rated 93/100) because of its extraordinarily pure crème de cassis character, big, sweet licorice, cedary, full-bodied opulence, and voluptuous personality. After that, I thought the 2002 Steinhauer Cabernet Sauvignon (rated 90/100) revealed impressive minerality along with white flowers, and serious density, structure, and delineation. Tenuta San Guido This wine has inspired concertos, poems and praise from critics and aspiring wine aficionados alike. Composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, Sassicaia is aged for 22 months in Allier and Troncais oak. A name meaning the place of many stones Sassicaia remains the benchmark for Tuscan winemaking today. Marchese Nicolo Incisa della Rocchetta, Proprietor 2004 Sassicaia 164.99 2004 Sassicaia mag. 329.99 The 2004 Sassicaia is a lovely, understated effort. Medium in body, it presents nuanced layers of sweet dark fruit, licorice, menthol and toasted oak that gradually open onto a finely-knit frame of notable length. Today it appears to be quite reticent and still holding back much of its potential. Wine Advocate, rated 93/100 we think at will prove to be a great vintage for Sassicaia. Marchese Nicolo Incisa Della Rocchetta Vintners in Bolgheri, home to Sassicaia and Ornellaia, say 2004 is close to 1998 in quality. James Suckling Aromas of chocolate, currant and blackberry, with a hint of Spanish cedar. Full-bodied, with firm, velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Racy and very well-structured. Builds on the palate. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2012. Wine Spectator, rated 94/100 The original super-tuscan red (a term for wines that brought French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot into a Tuscan context), Sassicaia is still one of the greatest, if not the greatest. In 04, it s extraordinarily focused - a clear, pure statement of cassis fruit that opens in the glass to reveal smoky spice notes. Superstar Wine and Food 2003 Sassicaia 149.99 It is an outstanding effort for the vintage. Some cellaring is suggested although with air this wine is drinking beautifully right now. Mark Herold & Erika Gottl Mark Herold and Erika Gottel Some of the best Cabernet Sauvignons to emerge from California over the last two or three years have been the responsibility of winemaker Mark Herold. His own wine, Merus, is a no-holds-barred, full-throttle Cabernet Sauvignon. He s also doing exquisite work for such up-and-coming new wineries as Buccella, Hestan, Harris Estate, and Kamen, with a few more coming on board soon. This is modern California winemaking at its best, taking full advantage of extraordinary fruit potential in selected microclimates in Napa Valley. Robert Parker Harris Estate Vineyards Wine consultant Mark Herold is making the wines at this estate, which he considers to have some of the greatest terroir potential he has seen in Napa Valley. The vineyards are located on Diamond Mountain, in the distinctive micro-climate of the Franz Valley School Road (48 acres protected on three sides by forests). there are three single vineyard offerings These are impressive newcomers that merit serious attention. Wine Spectator Hong-Kong born, Stanley Cheng has, over the past two decades, built up one of the world s biggest cookware empires, controlling such brands as Kitchenaid, Farberware and Anolon. In 1996, he moved his world to Napa, buying a 127-acre ranch, much of which he devoted to vineyards. With the help and winemaking skills of Mark Herold of Merus, the two are producing some of Napa Valley s most compelling wines. Its inky/blue/purple color is followed by an explosive nose of blueberry liqueur intermixed with white chocolate and acacia flowers. Full-bodied, opulent, and dense with high but sweet levels of tannin, marvelous purity, and a layered finish that lasts for 40+ seconds, this superb 2003 can be drunk young or cellared for two decades. Robert Parker, rated 93/100. 2003 Meyer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 3.0 liter 549.99 Firm, intense and concentrated, with complex blackberry, tobacco, cassis and anise flavors that are tightly wound and sharply focused, finishing with chewy tannins and a delicious burst of fruit. Best from 2008 through 2012. Wine Spectator, rated 92/100 Merus What an inspirational story this small garage (literally) winery is! This classic seat of the pants winemaking operation is already producing thrilling Cabernets, largely because of the extraordinary enthusiasm and uncompromising ferocity of the husband/wife team of Mark Herold and Erika Gottl. Their objective is to eventually produce 1,000 cases of a fullthrottle, brilliantly etched, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Helena, Stags Leap, and Coombsville vineyard sources are among the most exciting new reds to come out of northern California in the last several years Readers wanting to have a chance to purchase a few bottles should contact the winery as virtually all of these wines are sold via a!mailing list. Robert Parker Mark Herold and Erika Gottel 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon 179.99 Rich and concentrated, with a generous mix of currant, blackberry, wild berry and mocha-laced oak. While intense and concentrated, it avoids being heavy, turning sleek and elegant. Deftly balanced and tightly focused, with a complex and lingering finish marked by hints of herb and black olive. Drink now through 2015. 875 cases made. Linne Calodo Matt Trevisan, proprietor & winemaker One of my favorite Rhône Ranger producers is Linne Calado s Matt Trevisan. He has been courageous in avoiding the mainstream approach to selling Rhône Ranger wines via varietal labeling, preferring to make the best blends possible à la some of the the Central Coast s most successful producers (i.e., Sine Qua Non, l Aventure, Saxum, and Villa Creek). Wine Advocate 2006 Contrarian 31.99 68% Roussanne, 32% Viognier Linne Calodo s gorgeous white wine, one of the best dry whites of the area, is the 2006 Contrarian, a blend of 68% Roussanne and 32% Viognier. This is a dry, full-bodied wine with notes of honeyed melons and citrus, a bit of pear, and some more exotic rose petal/floral notes. The wine has terrific fruit and finishes dry. Moreover, the good news is that there are 450 cases of it. All of this comes from both the James Berry and Denner Vineyards. Wine Advocate, rated 93/100 2005 Problem Child 44.99 71% Zinfandel, 17% Syrah, 12% Mourvedre The 2005 Problem Child (71% Zinfandel, 17% Syrah, and 12% Mourvedre) possesses beautiful raspberry and briery fruit as well as copious quantities of roasted herbs, pepper, and meaty characteristics. With excellent texture, full-bodied, powerful flavors (15.6% alcohol), good acidity, and a robust finish, it should drink well for 5-6 years. Wine Advocate, rated 92/100 2005 Leona s 45.79 62% Zinfandel, 30% Syrah, 8% Mourvedre A blend of 62% Zinfandel, 30% Syrah, and 8% Mourvedre, the 2005 Leona s exhibits gorgeously sweet raspberry and black cherry fruit along with a hint of resiny pine forest, medium to full body, terrific texture and richness, and a Mediterranean-styled personality as well as mouthfeel. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years. Wine Advocate, rated 93/100 2005 Slacker 41.99 65% Syrah, 35% Grenache 2005 Nemesis 59.99 85% Syrah, 11% Mourvedre, 4% Grenache The 2005 Nemesis (which was still in barrel) reminded me of a 2003 Northern Rhone red Hermitage. A blend of 85% Syrah, 11% Mourvedre, and 4% Grenache, the wine exhibits blackberry notes with hints of road tar, truffle, and earth. Spicy, with fabulous layers of rich creme de cassis fruit, this broad, expansive wine has superb purity, a beautifully textured mouthfeel, and a long finish. It should evolve for a decade or more. Great deals in Missouri on California wines? Brown Derby owner, Ron Junge, uses his long-standing connections to bring great California wines like Copain Syrah home to the Show-Me State. He also offers hard-to-find gems such as the 2002 Diebolt-Vallois Blanc de Blancs Champagne ($60). Tip: Many, but not all, of the wines here have low markups. Low inventory numbers ( Only 6 left!! ) are often a guide to bottles that are going fast. info@brownderby.com www.brownderby.com PG. 29

The Gang of Four The 2006 s are Stunning! Marcel Lapierre, proprietor ; Jean-Paul Thevenet; Guy Max Breton, proprietor & Jean Foillard The tasting I conducted in Marcel Lapierre s courtyard was one of the great experiences of my life. The Gang of Four, composed of Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard, Guy Breton ( Max ), and Jean-Paul Thevenet, are capable of producing superb, eye-popping Beaujolais. Readers with a propensity to believe that Beaujolais is not serious wine will find their preconceived notions shattered if they take the trouble to taste one of these Morgons These Morgons are delicious young, and can age remarkably well, as evidenced by a recently tasted 1985 from Marcel Lapierre. It is awesomely rich, full-flavored, extremely complex, and has evolved better than many of the Burgundies from the Côte d Or The art for Lapierre and the other three members of the Gang of Four is to respect the fruit. Unlike the vast majority of their neighbors in the Beaujolais, the Gang of Four harvest moderate yields by hand, use little sulphur, if any, almost never chaptalise, and have never acidified. Furthermore, these wines are neither fined nor filtered this philosophy can lead to some of the finest Beaujolais ever crafted. Australia s legendary, highly rated and praised Sticky Wines. Campbells N/V Muscat half 18.99 Rated 95/100, Wine Advocate N/V Tokay (Musadelle) half 18.99 Rated 94/100, Wine Advocate The average age of Campbells luxury blends is around 50 years, and the less expensive offerings are between 5-30 years of age. These stunning cuvées represent good values for what they are. The dense amber-colored nonvintage Muscat exhibits a sweet nose of toffee, maple syrup, and figs along with huge body, and no cloying sweetness because of good acidity. The non-vintage Tokay (Muscadelle) reveals a lighter amber color in addition to burnt/roasted notes of camphor, scorched earth, prunes, figs, caramel, and marmalade. Its full-bodied sweetness is beautifully balanced by acidity. Wine Advocate Chambers Rare Muscat half 249.99 Rated 100/100, Wine Advocate Grand Muscadelle half 99.99 Rated 98/100, Wine Advocate Grand Muscat half 99.99 Rated 99/100, Wine Advocate Muscadelle half 14.99 Rated 92/100, Wine Advocate Muscat half 14.99 Rated 95/100, Wine Advocate William Chambers s offerings, which are among the greatest fortified whites in the world, basically elicit the same comments as well as nearly identical scores every year. I was simply going to write blah, blah, blah, blah but I thought that might not be sufficient for new readers who have not seen my tasting notes in the past. The real values are the inexpensive Muscat and Muscadelle. The Muscadelle (Tokay) exhibits a light amber color as well as a gorgeous fragrance, and plenty of honey and molasses characteristics in a full-bodied, unctuous style. The Muscat is even better, offering a rose/amber color followed by notes of black tea. This sexy effort is the equivalent of liquid viagra. Full-bodied and opulent, these two cuvées average 10 years in age. The two Grand cuvées average 70 years in age. The dark amber-colored Grand Muscadelle (Tokay) possesses scents of caramel, toffee, figs, molasses, and black tea. The Grand Muscat reveals more orange marmalade notes. It is an incredibly unctuous, sweet, thick wine, but, like its siblings, it is neither heavy nor cloying because of good underlying acidity. The non-vintage rare Muscat and Rare Muscadelle are off any earthly chart in terms of richness and intensity. The major component in these fortifieds date from 1890. The Rare Muscadelle (Tokay) is a thick, unctuous, brown sugar-imbued fruit bomb revealing notes of balsamic vinegar intermixed with a smorgasbord of heavenly delights including caramel, melted toffee, maple syrup, and Asian spices. It must be tasted to be believed. The Rare Muscat may be even better, but the system stops at 100 points. It is equally rich, profound, concentrated, and unctuous, with explosive aromatic fireworks. Wine Advocate RL Buller Calliope Rare Tokay half 74.99 Fine Tawny half 13.99 Seppelt Show Reserve Sherry Oloroso D.P. 38 18.99 Show Reserve Tokay D.P. 57 18.99 Yalumba N/V Galway Pipe Port 16 year 34.99 N/V Museum Muscat half 17.99 Rated 96/100, Wine Advocate Yalumba is also a fabulous source of antique fortifieds that often sell for a song. The extraordinary non-vintage Museum Release Antique Tawny exhibits a medium amber color along with notes of prunes, sweet berries, raisins, spice, and jammy, overripe strawberries. Believed to be from a 20-year-old solera, it is delicious, but unlikely to improve. Even more provocative and distinctive is the non-vintage Museum Muscat. A killer value, it offers aromas of melted toffee, brandy-macerated raisins, prunes, maple syrup, molasses, and ripe figs. It is a stunning offering to enjoy at the end of a meal, or as dessert. Equally spectacular is the non-vintage Museum 50 year Old Antique Tawny. Readers who love the smell and taste of maple syrup, melted caramel, toffee, and pruny, berry fruit will adore this fragrant, medium amber-colored, full-bodied, unctuous, fortified treasure. None of these Australian fortifieds improve in the bottle, but they rarely change and can be kept for a long time. Once opened, they should be consumed within 4-7 days. Rare, Irreplaceable Vintage Madeiras Vintage Madeira is a very rare commodity, in fact extremely rare. Vintage years are declared 30 years after the vintage. The wines are kept in cask for 20 years before being bottled. They are ready to drink at this stage but are still considered young wines. Make no mistake, these elder citizens are wines of great consequence. Madeira, meaning forested in Portugese, is a small volcanic island 400 miles off the coast of Morocco. Vines grow perched on ledges in the fertile soil, infused with potash from a fire that raged for 7 years in the 15th century. Madeira is one of the longest lived of all wines and has retained its popularity since the 18th century, and, despite attacks by odium and phylloxera, outstanding quality wine has been produced since the 19th century. Today s Madeira is known by the principal grape varieties used; Sercial producing the driest wine, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey, the sweetest. Madeira Styles Sercial: Made from the Sercial grape. Often high tone, nutty, with lots of character. Dry wine. Verdelho: Medium to dry from the Verdelho grape. Smoky complexity with tang of acidity. Bual: Dark medium-rich, raisiny made from the Bual grape. Retains acidity with age. Malmsey: From the Malvasia Candida and Malvasia Babos grapes. Very sweet. Big levels of acidity. Gains richness with age. Barbeito It is ironic that among major producers of Madeira, the youngest firm has the most impressive stock of very old wines not only on the island of Madeira, but in the world. Vinhos Barbeito was founded just 58 years ago, in 1946, by Mario Barbeito de Vasconcelos, a wealthy businessman. The firm s incredible range of old vintages today is due to his foresight, since in the 1940 s and 1950 s Bareito de Vasconcelos went around the island buying up large quantities of privately owned wine, some of it dating back to the 18th century. These old wines became the foundation for one of the world s most unique wine libraries. 1960 Boal 199.99 1955 Boal 299.99 1953 Boal 299.99 1912 Boal 349.99 1910 Boal 349.99 1962 Malvasia 199.99 1954 Malvasia 299.99 1948 Malvasia 349.99 1875 Malvasia 599.99 1935 Sercial 299.99 1910 Sercial 349.99 1929 Verdelho 299.99 1926 Verdelho 299.99 Blandys The Blandys are unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company; nearly 2 centuries of fine wine production, 1811-2006. 1977 Bual 159.99 1971 Bual 169.99 1968 Bual 169.99 1964 Bual 199.99 1960 Bual 259.99 1948 Bual 359.99 1920 Bual 699.99 1974 Sercial 149.99 1966 Sercial 149.99 1977 Verdelho 159.99 1968 Verdelho 169.99 Broadbent 1940 Sercial 599.99 1954 Verdelho 399.99 1964 Bual 369.99 1978 Bual 219.99 1978 Terrantez 289.99 Cossart Cossart Gordon & Co. was established in 1745 and is the oldest company in the Madeira Wine trade. Francis Newton, a young Scot, sailed from Gravesend in Britain and arrived in Madeira on September 12th 1745 founding the company. He was joined by his younger brother Thomas from 1758 to 1763 and then by another Scot, Thomas Gordon of Balmaghie also in 1758. Thomas Murdoch joined the firm in 1791 that came to be called Newton, Gordon, Murcoch & Co. By 1850 the firm was said to be shipping half the growth of the island and Newton s contacts in America through his brother Andrew (who left Scotland for Virginia) were proving to be highly successful and the company acquired an unequalled reputation as suppliers of fine Madeiras. To this day, Cossart Gordon Madeiras are considered the very finest available. 1963 Bual 199.99 1950 Sercial 249.99 D Oliveira D Oliveira is one of the greatest of the classic Madeira shippers, and one of the few to survive from the pre-phylloxera era. Founded in 1820, and today housed in cellars that date from 1619, this small jewel of a company is still owned by the same family, its vineyards holdings built up over time through a series of marriages with other wineproducing families. But what is really extraordinary is that D Olivera has held on to many of its most famous vintages, creating a unique, and irreplaceable, stock of old wines. And remarkably they are all D Oliveira wines, not purchased from other shippers or growers. 1968 Boal 179.99 1922 Boal 399.99 1908 Boal 499.99 1903 Boal 649.99 1907 Malvasia 599.99 1895 Malvasia 649.99 1900 Moscatel 649.99 1937 Sercial 349.99 1966 Verdelho 179.99 1912 Verdelho 499.99 1905 Verdelho 599.99 1900 Verdelho 649.99 1977 Terrantez 149.99 Leacock John Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after the death of his father) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice at the firm of Madeira merchants, Catanach and Murdoch staying until his contract expired on 11 March 1749. Sherries Extraordinaire Superb Sherries of Emilio Lustau Simply staggering in quality what complex fine old Sherry is all about Sherries such as these remain among the last great unknown bargains of the world. They must be tasted to be believed! Robert Parker Lustau stands at the very apex of the Sherry world. Decanter Magazine as different from standard Sherries as chalk from cheese. Clive Coates The House of Emilio Lustau, founded in 1896, is one of the largest independent, family-owned producers in Jerez today. In addition to their highly-acclaimed Reserva Range of typical sherries, they currently offer, in extremely limited quantities, ten Almacenista wines. These are carefully selected and drawn from small stocks of authentic, pure, unblended and completely dry, classical Sherries matured by the Almacenistas of Jerez and its surroundings, in southern Spain. As well Lustau is quite proud to offer their very rare Landed Age Sherries. Quantities are extremely limited in all cases. Almacenista Sherries Over the last decade, Lustau has become noted for a number of specialty sherries, including the Almacenistas (meaning storekeeper or stockholder, pronounced almath-en-eesta) - great old Sherries that Lustau buys from stocks produced and own by private individuals, bottled in very small quantities. There are about 54 Almacenistas in the Sherry district, acting as stockholders, some of which have their own vineyards. They all mature stocks of exceptionally highquality old sherries. Whenever a shipper needs to improve a blend of Oloroso or Fino, he may obtain a butt or two from an Almacenista. The name of the Almacenistas never appeared on a bottle of Sherry until recently when the House of Lustau (itself an Almacenista until 1950) decided to release a select range of these fine, old unblended Sherries, which they purchased from various Almacenistas. A Designation such as 1/50 appears on the label and indicates that the bottling is from a Solera consisting of only 50 butts, with the smaller the number of butts the rarer the wine. Bollinger Special Cuvee Special Cuvée is the purest expression of Champagne Bollinger s style. All the House s know-how is required in order to create, year after year, a blend that is consistent both in style and quality. It has a depth and balance, with rich and toasty aromas. The Bollinger style is very round and mature with a luxurious finish. 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier Compact and yeasty, this bubbly evokes bread dough and grapefruit flavors backed by verve and a chalky texture. It has a fine mousse and a lingering finish. Wine Spectator Deep, rich and honeyed, with a powerful scents of ripe pear, apple and toasted nuts. A classic rendition of the house style, with serious weight and dense, chewy apple and pear flavors complicated by butter and toast accents. Finishes on a tangy note of orange zest. MasteRs O The Vineyard, Fall Edition, 2007 DOMinique LafOn The wines of Comte Lafon rarely need introduction since this is one of Burgundy s top estates. They are renowned for producing some of the most sought after, complex and age worthy white wines from the village of Meursault. dominique LAFon, ProPriETor PhoTos By jean chevaldonné Les HeRitieRs Du COMte LafOn The most famous white burgundies come from the Côte d Or, but the best values in these wines hail from the Mâconnais, the region just to the south. There, young winemakers have begun bottling their own wines instead of selling to cooperatives. They are also breaking with tradition by fermenting and aging their wine in stainless steel rather than oak, thus giving the wine a fresher taste. The vintage of choice is 2005, but 2004 offers many pleasant surprises and well-stored 2002s are drinking beautifully. Prices run from $15 to $30 per bottle, with a few old vine offerings pushing into the $40-to-$50 zone Famous for its white Burgundy, this domaine also makes a half-dozen or so offerings of 100% Chardonnay wines. Steve Tanzer, rated 90-92/100 Sporting a nose of boisterous spices, roasted pears, and dried honey, the 2002 Viré-Clessé Cuvee Tradition reveals a rich, satin-textured character. Its white truffle, honey, liqueur of mineral, and massively spicy flavor profile is lush, oily, concentrated, and exceptionally long in the finish. Drink it over the next 6+ years. Wine Advocate 1994 Macon Viré-Clessé Cuvee Botrytis 219.99 1994 Macon Viré-Clessé Cuvee Botrytis half 109.99 Orange-yellow color. High-toned, resiny aromas of honey, toffee and white raisin; here the strong noble rot is much more roasted than that of the 2000. Super concentrated and silky, but as with the 2000 the powerful acids leaven the wine s thickness. Distinctly more roasted and rustic in character than the 2000, with higher volatile acidity, but utterly fascinating sweet wine. This is carrying 250 grams of residual sugar. Vintages 2000 and 1994 are my two most concentrated years for this wine, Thevenet told me. Steve Tanzer, rated 94/100 This would be on my very short list as one of the greatest Chardonnay based late harvest wines I have ever had the privilege of trying as the balance and harmony of this wine defy description. Intense, rich, explosive and magnificently complex, this combines knockout satin-textured flavors and a superbly long finish this quite simply ravishes the palate yet everything remains balanced and in perfect harmony. A bit lower in acidity than either the 2000 or the 95 and this is approaching its apogee. Allen Meadows, rated 95/100 DOMaine emilian GiLLet Jean Thevenet, who is best known for his Domaine de la Bongran, is also the owner and winemaker of the Domaine Emilian Gillet. 2002 Macon Viré-Clessé 19.99 Jean Thevenet produced an excellent 2002 Macon- Villages (Domaine Emilian Gillet). Loads of rocks, apples, spices, and linden can be found in its boisterous aromatics. Lush, rich, and light to medium-bodied, its flavor profile is dominated by honeyed minerals. This spicy, well-balanced wine should be drunk over the next 3-4 years. Wine Advocate Highly perfumed, elegant, pure, fresh and subtly spicy aromas lead to bigger, rounder and notably rich flavors that offer impressive density and a mouth coating texture and a palate staining finish. This is full bodied with a glycerol sweetness to it yet the explosive finish is completely dry. This is an extremely impressive effort. Burghound Spiced apple and pear on the nose. Richer, riper and fatter than the 2001, with a silky texture and hints of exotic fruits. This big boy will be showy early on Steve Tanzer info@brownderby.com www.brownderby.com PG. 39

Rare Wines From Alsace Restricted to four noble grape varieties, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat, these rare wines are subject to France s most stringent wine laws. Vendanges Tardives wines are picked last of all, and only from the choicest plots in the greatest years, the grapes are always over-ripe and often affected by noble rot. Selection de Grains Nobles wines are even richer and rarer than Vendange Tardive ones. They are only harvested under ideal climatic conditions, the botrytised grapes literally being picked one by one. These rare nectars have an unrivaled aromatic intensity and can improve for decade after decade. Wines of Kings. The King of Wines. Louis XIV Tokaji invigorates every fiber of the brain and brings forth an enchanting sparkle of wit and good cheer from the depths of the soul. Voltaire, 1749 The Wines Of Hungary The Classes of Tokaji (Comments by Hugh Johnson) Tokaji Aszu Aszu is the term for grapes infected with noble rot. Destalked hand-picked Aszu grapes are stored 6-8 days, then kneaded to a pulp which is added to base Tokay wine, or to must, by the puttony (hod of 20-25 kilos). The eventual sweetness depends on the number of puttonyos added to the 136-140 litre barrels (called Gorci) of one-year-old base wine - usually 3,4 and 5 puttonyos. 6 is exceptional. Tokaji Aszu Essencia Only individually hand-selected Aszu grapes. Only produced in exceptional years from the best vineyards. Tokaji Essence Destalked hand-picked Aszu grapes. While grapes are being stored (see Tokay Aszu) the pressure of their own weight the tub (one puttonyo yields only 142 millimeters of this Essence). The juice is then allowed to ferment extremely slowly for many years in oak casks. Rusack Geoff Rusack, proprietor and John Falcone, winemaker 2006 Chardonnay Santa Barbara County 22.99 The distinctive flavors from the cool Northern and Western extremes of Santa Barbara County came together in this bottle. Here, their love of blending has resulted in a marriage of exceptional fruit aromas with carefully balanced acidity, capturing the best qualities of the area. Graceful orange blossom, Fuji apple and citrus notes are highlighted in this appealingly crisp white wine. 2006 Sauvignon Blanc Santa Ynez Valley 16.99 This beautifully dry white wine is perfumed with aromas of honeydew melon, pears and spun sugar. These aromas merge with flavors of Meyer lemon and pineapple on the palate, and finish with a sensation that is both fruity and crisp. 2005 Syrah Santa Barbara County 22.99 The Syrah varietal is Santa Barbara County s great noble red. Formidable and age-worthy, it excels beyond all measure in our county. This bottling is abundant with suggestions of cherry, blackberry and hints of vanilla. Its silky texture carries ripe fruit and tannins on the palate. Syrah Suits Washington At its best, Washington Syrah displays the deep color, violet-laced perfume, and peppery palate of Hermitage and Côtie-Rôtie, but with less tannin. Vivid, focused fruit is more common than overt jammyness, perhaps owing to cold nights at the end of the growing season It s a long way from the Rhône Valley to the Pacific Northwest, but Syrah is right at home in both places. Gambero Rosso 2004 Ornellaia Tenuta Dell Ornellaia This could be one of the best vintages ever for Ornellaia! Just rated 97 points by James Suckling, in The Wine Spectator Insider s September 5th edition: Dark ruby-purple in color, with complex aromas of dark chocolate, cola, vanilla, cedar and currant. Full-bodied yet ultrarefined, with dense, seamless, caressing tannins. Everything is in the right proportion. Superb. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Rated 95 points by Antonio Galloni in The Wine Advocate: A lively dark ruby, it is a vibrant effort bursting with expressive aromatics and layered, well-delineated fruit, showing much purity on the palate and closing with a long, finessed finish. Readers hoping to catch this wine s full array of nuances will have to wait at least another few years as the wine remains quite primary today. This exquisite effort is not to be missed. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019. Rated 92 points by Ian D Agata in Stephen Tanzer s International Wine Cellar: Deep ruby. The initially reticent nose begins with a hint of grass before revealing wonderfully complex notes of raspberry, red and black cherry, leather, tobacco and intriguing minerality. Much more explosive on the palate from the get-go, with deep, ripe red and black fruit flavors given extra lift and complexity by pretty coffee and dark chocolate highlights. World Famous Grappa Grappa is a legal Italian name given to the distilled spirits obtained through the distillation of the pomace of pressed grapes (skins, seeds, and a small quantity of pulp, must, and wine). It is a brandy unique to its kind. The basic difference is that Grappa is obtained by distilling the pomace with boiling water and the extraction of alcohol present in it through a flow of hot steam. Other brandies or Eau-de-Vie are obtained with the distillation of washing waters of the pomace. There are two distillation methods. The first, a continuous distillation, finds its application in the industrial production of grappa. The second, a discontinuous distillation, is used by small distillers. The second method used by most of the Master Grappaioli implies constant attention to the process of distillation. The grappa maker continuously corrects the trend of distillation by an everchanging manual ability determined by the characteristic and type of pomace put in the boiler. The effect of the discontinuous system is to allow for a slow distillation and an accurate fractioning of the boiling liquid. Paolo Marolo, Jacopo Poli, and Nonino are considered Master Grappaioli. Grappa can be aged or not aged. Clear grappa is not aged. It can also be fruit infused with different flavors. Uva is very similar to grappa but is made from whole grapes and is considered an immature grape brandy. Long Shadows Distinguished Wineries & Vineyards Something incredible is happening right in our backyard, something that just may be the coolest thing to happen to wine in this young 21st century After tasting the first vintages it s evident many of them are on par with and may even surpass the best wines made in Washington to date. Seattle Washington, February 2006. After twenty years at the helm of the Stimson Lane wine group (Chateau Ste. Michelle, Columbia Crest and other wineries), Allen Shoup retired to pursue a personal dream. For years he had envisioned a joint venture with highly acclaimed winemakers from different regions of the world. His goal was to bring their expertise to Washington to create some of the most luxurious wines ever crafted from the region s fabled viniferous grapes. Wines that stand shoulder to shoulder with the world s best. Build it and they will come. Actively encouraged by his associates, including long time friend and mentor, Robert G. Mondavi, Allen did just that. He invited several of the world s most venturesome and exciting vintners to the sunny slopes where the Snake River and the Yakima River flow into the mighty Columbia. With their enthusiastic support and advice, Allen drew up plans to establish individual wineries that would reflect the status and acclaim of each vintner. He named the venture Long Shadow Vintners, in tribute to this select group of individuals, who shape the industry with their benchmark wines and wineries. 2005 Poet s Leap Riesling 19.99 Armin Diel The 2005 vintage of Poet s Leap is an off-dry wine with expressive, spicy aromatics and generous, lively flavors. As true as it ever was Merlot Is America s sweetheart Despite the availability of intriguing wines from around the globe and our increased willingness to try them, our oldest and truest friend may still be our dearest. Merlot is the leading red varietal wine purchased by Americans today, the San Francisco-based Wine Institute, citing an AC Nielson poll, declared just last year. According to Nielsen, Merlot became the top red wine in the U.S. in 1999, and has been America s darling ever since. Merlot s most lovable quality may well be its versatility at the table. It pairs equally well with beef, pork, veal, lamb and chicken- a claim few (if any) other varietals can make. We had the honor of visiting with Stephen Hansel at his winery last summer to taste a few wines and talk about upcoming releases, all of which reinforced our opinion that this is one of the true gems in California! Stephen maintains a philosophy that good wine is made to be consumed, and to that end, he keeps the pricing on his wines very reasonable, particularly considering that all the fruit is estate-owned in a very desirable location in Sonoma. The wines themselves have tremendous character and elegance, due to the vineyard site and to Stephen s preference for Burgundy and the influence that this has upon his winemaking decisions. We are fortunate to represent these wines and can highly recommend any of them to our customers. $ 34 99 per bottle PG. 50 Phone 1-800-491-3438 Local 417-883-4066 FAX 417-881-0036

Chateau Rayas The hardest task is to summarize all that Chateau Rayas embodies in a paragraph. Emmanuel and Françoise Reynaud impress and charm with their talent and knowledge of the land they own and love. Walking through the vineyards of Rayas and sticking one s hand in the sandy soil, one can imagine how water quickly drains away from the thirsty vines and leaves them to struggle and stress, ultimately creating the haunting, enamoring wines that are the signature of this Estate. As one walks through the pine forests between the vineyards, sand climbs up the sides of your shoes and a constant breeze always seems to touch your sun-burnt cheeks. Old Grenache vines reach up out of the barren ground displaying small bunches of grapes like a precious offering in the palm formed by each gnarly, grey hand. emmanuel reynaud, winemaker From these meager yields (often a ton or less an acre) comes one of the most revered and enigmatic wines ever fashioned. The heady concoction of wild strawberry, framboise, kirsch and a healthy dose of black pepper is instantly recognizable for its singular and matchless character that defies summary. k Just Arrived!k Following in the footsteps of a legend can t be easy, and Emmanuel Reynaud has been working under a microscope at Rayas for almost a decade now, since the death of his uncle Jacques in 1997. Any doubts I might have had about the current level of quality here were put to rest with the wines I saw this year. Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar certainly I was critical of Emmanuel s efforts in 98, 99, 00 actually very good wines but lacking the excitement of those vintages and his uncle s magic but he has been at Rayas 10 years now and the tasting I had with him last week was the finest tasting I have had there since the era of Jacques Reynaud so don t count him out Robert Parker 2004 Château Rayas Châteauneuf du Pape 129.99 Medium red. Stunning floral and red berry aromas emphasize raspberry, strawberry and fresh lavender. Bright, focused and pure, with vibrant red fruit and mineral flavors given an exotic twist by a hint of dried apricot. The sweet finish leaves a strong floral pastille impression. The freshness and precision of this wine are really captivating. This is one of the richest, most honeyed Rayas whites I have tasted, and boasts good underlying acidity, beautiful purity, and loads of flowery exotic fruits in the aromas and flavors. It should drink well for 10-15 years, possibly even longer. A good feeling story is that of MIke Officer, a home winemaker who began his winery, Carlisle, in 1998, while he was still working as a software developer. The huge success he enjoyed among his mailing list customers, who quickly recognized his dedication to serious winemaking from old vineyard sites, allowed him to abandon his software career to become a fulltime owner and winemaker. These are all big, but incredibly well-balanced, fresh wines. Officer is not afraid to push ripeness to the edge, but, remarkably, the wines are never over the top, revealing tremendous textures, aromatics, and ripeness. He has become one of the top three or four Zinfandel producers in northern California, and also demonstrates a sure hand with Syrah and some of the old field blends planted by Italian immigrants over a century ago. Elegant Integrated California Pinot Noir New Releases! John Berlin & Lily oliver, proprietors & winemakers 2004 El Molino Pinot Noir Rutherford 873 cases produced Founder Reginald Oliver is no longer with us, but his daughter Lily is maintaining the lofty standards of perfection he established. The making of the 2004 Pinot Noir was Reginald s last, and it is a Burgundian-styled beauty that just earned a 92 point rating by Wine Spectator s James Laube: A rare but highly successful Rutherford Pinot Noir. Rich and intense, with deep red currant, raspberry and wild berry flavors [It has] complexity and depth. Clearly this tiny producer s best yet. $ 54 99 per bottle Bob Cabrale, winemaker 2005 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast This has the delicate strength that Pinot Noir takes on in the most aristocratic settings. Bob Cabral blends this wine from four notable far coast sites (Precious Mountain, Coastlands, Hirsch and Peay) with estate grown fruit from the Drake vineyard in Russian River Valley. Together, the fruit yields floral scents of strawberry while the tannins seem imperceptible but strong. The flavors are as sunny and lacy as breaks in the coastal fog. If you like far coast Pinot, don t miss this 2005. Highly Rated and Very Much Sought After Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Papes 2004 Chateauneuf du pape The 2004 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape has turned out to be one of the finest wines of the vintage this blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, and the rest some of the other red varietals that are permitted, is performing beautifully and is certainly one of the vintage s superstars. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, rich, and as accessible as the 2003, but slightly fresher and not as muscular and thick. Nevertheless, this is a top effort from the father and son team of Paul and Vincent Avril. This wine can be drunk now but can be cellared for 15-20 years. Wine Advocate, rated 95/100 Amazingly refined, with a pure, silky current of raspberry ganache and cassis flavors that glides along supple tannins. Hints of mocha, mineral and garrigue check in on the long, pure finish. Has serious structure for the long haul. All about balance and finesse. Drink now through 2030. 6,880 cases made. Wine Spectator, rated 96/100 Very rich, in fact one of the more powerful wines of the vintage, with excellent depth and sweetness. The finish is chewy and strikingly long. Avril compares this one to 1995 in quality. Steve Tanzer, rated 94/100 $ 79 99 magnum $ 149 99 magnum Domaine du Pegau 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee A candidate for wine of the vintage is the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee. Pegau did not produce a Cuvee da Capo in 2004, and the Cuvee Reservee has undoubtedly benefited from the inclusion of that stunning lot of wine. A late harvest lasted through the first week of October. Yields were 32 hectoliters per hectare, resulting in an opaque purple-colored effort revealing Laurence Feraud, proprietor classic Provencal characteristics of melted licorice, roasted herbes de Provence, sweet blackberry and cherry fruit, and hints of gamy/animal notes and smoke. Meaty, full-bodied, stunningly concentrated and pure, and in need of 4-5 years of cellaring, it promises to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage, lasting for a minimum of two decades. Wine Advocate, rated 94+/100 A real powerhouse, with muscular layers of fig and black currant compote, backed by by braised beef, chestnut, tobacco and tar flavors. The long, mesquite-filled finish lets additional bittersweet cocoa and dark fruit notes linger, with lots of garrigue. Best from 2008 through 2025. 5,000 cases made. Domaine Tempier Domaine Tempier s rosé, considered by many to be the finest in France, is fuller and creamier on the palate and shows dimensions not often found in rosé. Perhaps the addition of young Mourvèdre is responsible, or the Peyraud s allowance for the wine to follow natural inclination and complete malolactic fermentation. The Domaine also makes three single vineyard wines, two blended red wines, and, from time to time, a white wine. La Migoua (single vineyard, 80% Mourvèdre) perhaps displays the most power and richness. La Tourtine has a higher percentage of Mourvèdre (88%) and a firmer, more elegant structure. Cabassaou is the smallest bottling, made from a kermit Lynch, Importer small portion of the La Tourtine vineyard which is planted to 100% Mourvèdre, Tempier s oldest vines. Domaine Tempier Bandol: One of my favorite wines a big, spicy red Domaine Tempier s Bandol bottles the herbaceous zest of Provence. It s found on wine lists all over France and is almost always a good buy. Patricia Wells, Food Lover s Guide to France Domaine Tempier today makes one of the finest red wines of Provence. Their s is a wine that you can end up loving. In my personal cellar I own more bottles of Domaine Tempier s bold-tasting, soulful red than any other single wine. It may not be rational; it is a love affair. Kermit Lynch its 2006 Bandol Rosé 31.99 2005 Bandol Rouge 41.99 2005 Bandol La Migoua 61.99 2005 Bandol La Tourtine 61.99 2002 Denis Mortet A re-release Mortet made some incredible 1993s and I have long thought that he hadn t matched them until I tasted his superb, and wonderfully pure, 2001s. I m pleased to report that his incredible 2002s eclipse both vintages and they should be on your short list of wines to acquire at least a few bottles of. With that drum roll, Mortet s take on the vintage is that the wines are incredibly fresh and this is partially due to the late, and very long malos indeed, the malos just The Late denis mortet finished in the last couple of weeks. In terms of comparables, on paper, 2002 resembles no vintage in the last 30 years but I think it s like a great 90 in the mouth. In short, 2002 is a dream vintage and it s the best that I ve ever made; in fact I wouldn t change even one thing that I did. At the time of my visit, Mortet was planning to bottle in March and April, without fining or filtration. Allen Meadows. Burghound 2002 Gevrey Chambertin 89.99 Pungently earthy black pinot fruit aromas lead to bigger, richer, more concentrated flavors blessed with much finer tannins and excellent persistence. Allen Meadows, Burghound Sweet black fruits make up the aromatic profile of the 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin. Pure, vibrant, and expressive, this silky-textured wine reveals loads of candied black fruit flavors in its lengthy personality. Robert Parker Good red-ruby. Black raspberry, blueberry, game, licorice and smoky oak on the nose. Fat, round, sweetand full, with a ripe chocolatey flavor. Very round, pliant village wine with sweet tannins and impressive length. Steve Tanzer 2002 Gevrey Chambertin Au Vellé 99.99 Extremely ripe pinot fruit combines with coffee and restrained torrefaction notes leading to rich, suave and velvety flavors that offer excellent volume but the same elegance and finesse of the best in this range. This is sappy and exceptionally long with the tannin quality of a top 1er. Allen Meadows, Burghound From a parcel located below the Combe aux Moines, the 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Au En Vellé sports a magnificent nose of red cherries, raspberries, and spices. This silky-textured wine explodes on the palate with layers of toasted oak-tinged sweet cherries. Its tannin is present, providing structure, yet it is ripe and suave. Robert Parker Ruby-red. Wild small berries dominate the nose, along with torrefaction notes of espresso and bitter chocolate. Juicy, tight and very intensely flavored, but presently a bit imploded. Still, this comes across as sweeter than the Deree. All dark berries today. Finishes firmly tannic and quite long. Steve Tanzer PG. 62 Phone 1-800-491-3438 Local 417-883-4066 FAX 417-881-0036

top flight Reds from south america 2003 CaRO Wine & Spirits Magazine tasted over 234 Argentina reds over the past 12 months and the 2003 CARO received their strongest praise! This joint venture between Lafite Rothschild and Catena is reaching one of the highest levels in Argentina with the 2003, a monumental and complex blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon (50/50). It opens up with an enchanting cascade of toffee, chocolate, sweet spices and vibrant red fruit flavors; with air, a dusty mineral character and tobacco scent join in. The tannins feel as lean and tense as the muscles of a marathon runner, with the ability to hold the wine for the long haul. Save this bottle for ten years; then decant for roast boar. Wine & Spirits, rated 94/100 $ 34 99 per bottle 2004 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta Arguably one of Chile s finest wines, Casa Lapostolle continues the tradition of quality with their 2004 Clos Apalt release. Since the 2000 vintage, Clos Apalta has been included in The Wine Spectator s Top Wines of the Year listing three times (2000, 2001, and 2003 vintages). Time will tell if the 2004 will join their ranks, however, the fact remains that Clos Apalta is consistently one of the best wines to come out of Chile. Pick up a few bottles today! Offers gorgeous aromas of crushed plum and boysenberry fruit, with notes of sweet tobacco, mocha and vanilla. Delivers a plush, silky texture through the fruit-filled finish, with a fine, buried minerality. Carmenère, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2014. 3,000 cases imported. Wine Spectator, rated 93/100 The 2004 Clos Apalta is composed of 86% Carmenere and 14 % Merlot. Purple colored, it has a splendid bouquet of pain grille, spice box, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by a rich, layered wine with excellent grip and plenty of ripe tannins. This nicely balanced effort should reach its peak in 5-6 years and drink well through 2027 Wine Advocate, rated 91/100 $ 59 99 per bottle info@brownderby.com www.brownderby.com PG. 63
