Alto Adige Wines U.S. Newsletter Volume 1 2016 PG 4 Press Highlights What the Press Has to Say: Alto Adige in the Media Abbazia di Novacella Alto Adige Kerner Anyone keeping score at home will have noticed that I have a bit of a fetish for the Alto Adige region of northeastern Italy. This Kerner is one reason why. A German grape with some Riesling parentage, good Kerners have a crisp, dry, appley nature and are green-gold in the glass. This one s a beauty, with a peach note and a good balance between opulence and restraint. Which is what we re all looking for, aren t we? Amy Glynn Paste magazine August 12, 2015 I am such a fan of Pinot Grigio from Alto Adige. Representing the best of the variety, with high acidity kept fresh by planting vineyards in the high elevations at the base of the Italian Alps, while developing rich stone fruit and citrus flavors, helped by warm daytime temperatures occurring easily throughout summer days in the Italian region. Consistent favorites include Elena Walch, Tieffenbruner, Alois Legader and Abbazia di Novacella. Hayley Hamilton Cogill D Magazine September 9, 2015 What if I told you about a beautiful Alpine region that is technically in Italy but where the people speak German and make some of the best white wines and some of the bestvalue Pinot Noirs in the world? Would you believe it? Would you call it a fantasy land? Well, the place is called Alto Adige, Italy s northernmost wine region, and it s real. And its Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer and especially a light, fruity, easydrinking red called Schiava offer real value. Jason Wilson Beverage Media October 27, 2015 Pinot Grigio, for example, too often tastes wan and insipid, but in Alto Adige, the grape produces interesting sometimes even arresting wines which work beautifully with food. Kettmeir s 2014 Pinot Grigio tasted surprisingly rich and spicy, and the Viticoltori Alto Adige s 2014 San Pietro Pinot Grigio had cheerful fruit and clear focus. Most memorable was the San Pietro Pinot Grigio Kristall, made from fruit grown at up to 2,000 feet above sea level. It felt very refined, with ripe fruit, white-pepper spice and notable minerality. Andrew Harper AndrewHarper.com November 5, 2015 2014 Nals Margreid Galea Schiava Alto Adige It was through the promotion of Sudtirolean wines that I first made the acquaintance of this grape. I was quickly smitten. Gentle and low in alcohol, this refreshing red is oozing with honesty first exhibited by its pretty, enticing nose. While light in density, it's packed with beautiful floral and cheery cherry flavors. The fastest (and least expensive) way to teleport yourself to lunch at a causal trattoria in northern Italy. Still very smitten. Terrific bargain. Steve McIntosh Winethropology December 14, 2015 Continued on page 5
